In this video, I demonstrate a 3 wire Start/Stop circuit with multiple push buttons. This is an update of our original video by the same name • Basic Motor Control: 3... . In this video, I try to show the field wiring as clearly as I could while at the same time, showing the live wiring schematic. I made this video in response to several comments from viewers who were looking for more clarity. So here is out updated 3 wire start stop circuit video. I describe each of the components involved, such as the motor starter, overload, start pushbutton, stop pushbutton, and control power and how they work. I then screencast a simulated circuit so you can visualize exactly what is happening in the Start-Stop Circuit.

Walter great information. Do you have a video or diagram explaining this same concept using a DC off/on/(on) switch? One off/on/(on) switch in one location and second off/on/(on) switch in another location. Start the engine from one location but be able to shut down from either location. Like a rocker switch used for diesel engines to be started and shut down from more than one dashboard. Thank you

Nice 👍🏻. Very informative. What about a 240v coil on a single phase starter with a stop, start?
@AccessToPower
@AccessToPower 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tracy! With a 240 volt coil you will wire the starter and the buttons exactly the same way. Line 1 of your 240 volt circuit will,wire through the buttons and to the starter the same way. The difference will be that instead of wiring the neutral wire through the Normally Closed overload relay and to the coil, you will wire Line 2 of your 240 volt circuit through the overload relay. Also remember the single pole fuse switch I show on the control power circuit would need to be a 2 pole to disconnect both legs of the control power 240 volt circuit at the same time.

Why did you wire the neutral to the bottom of your overload protection device? If you explain that in a bit more detail that be appreciated, thank you. Other than that I understood the information presented in the video.
@AccessToPower
@AccessToPower 4 жыл бұрын
AKBRONCOSFAN007 The overload is a normally closed safety switch. I wire the neutral to one side of the overload, and the other side of The overload is wired to the coil on the starter. This feeds one side of the coil. So a neutral is always available if the overload is not tripped to the coil. When the start button is pressed and the whole circuit is engaged, 110 V is applied to the other side of the coil. So if you lose
@AccessToPower

AKBRONCOSFAN007 Power than the quail will turn off or if the overload trips and you lose the neutral the overload will turn off.
@SH-pc4xt
@SH-pc4xt 4 жыл бұрын
@@AccessToPower Just piecing it together w/o typos: So if you lose power to the coil the contractor will turn off. This will happen when either you lose control circuit power (fro coming through the breaker due to power failure or turning the breaker off) or if the neutral overload protection NC switches open in response to overload condition. Either of these events will cut the neutral connection to the contractor coil, shutting off both the power going to the load and the hot (red) line going to the top side of the contractor coil.
@123verne
@123verne 6 ай бұрын
Why does the neutral have to go through the overload relay and not just straight to the coil (A2)?
@AccessToPower
@AccessToPower 6 ай бұрын
If the neutral went straight to the coil then the motor starter would never trip due to an overload

@AccessToPower
@AccessToPower 3 жыл бұрын
Adrian Bano, yes you can send control power to the coil without auxiliaries through a maintained selector switch or something similar. The only thing to keep in mind though is if the power is interrupted and restored the motor will immediately start running again.

@jimmysutton286
@jimmysutton286 4 жыл бұрын
X1 is the control power X2 is the other leg of the control power, either the "neutral" of a 120v cct or the other leg of a 240v cct.

Walter, I have a question for you. Does the position of a overload change when the start button is pressed? I see sometimes the control circuit is passed through the overload before it is connected to the stop button.
@AccessToPower
@AccessToPower 4 жыл бұрын
Devon Salmon the position of the overload contacts does not change when the start or stop buttons are pressed. Th OL contact position only changes in the event that the OL trips due to the motor drawing more current than the OL is set for. This then opens the NC OL contact which interrupts the control circuit to shut off the starter and turn off the motor before permanent damage is done to the motor.

AccessToPower ok. Thanks I have learnt a lot of things from you since I subscribe to your channel. There is one circuit I would like you to explain for me. It’s is a two float control circuit for a lift station. A lower float switch and a higher float switch in series that control a pump in a lift staton. The lower float switch comes in but does not start the pump until the higher float switch is activated. And the pump does not shut off until the lower float switch is de-activated. Thanks in advance.

How does this work for using this on a ansul system
@AccessToPower
@AccessToPower 5 жыл бұрын
with an annual system you will need a couple starters. One, the hood exhaust, will remain running in the event the Ansul fire protection system goes off, while the other starter, for make up air needs to turn off. That is so you don't pump oxygen into the room and feed the fire.
