I have a 1yr old black lab who is also off leash trained. The other day I noticed his recall wasn’t as perfect as usual so I felt really down on myself about it. I bear myself up thinking ‘I must have messed up. I thought he had it down’. Andy, you saying he can never be too good for the basics’ made it click with me. Going back to basics now and then isn’t a bad thing it’s apart of having a working dog. Thank you ❤️

Got to say. I went into town today to get my oil changed . took along my 6 month old Malinois. First time riding in my van. she was a little edgy and a little nervine on the ride over. we went for a WORKING walk. she did awesome. Very calm on the ride home. when we get in the house the dogs start typically start rough housing NOT this time. Thank you Andy!

Funny you say about working on these basics until he retires. We’ve already experienced this issue with our 6 month old Cané Corso. He was doing so well with the basics and so we let up on his daily training for a bit and now he is a hot mess. Which is what brought me here. Bc of his breed type, he’s in his teenage years and now testing what he can and can’t get away with so we’ve found ourselves working harder to get him back on track with the basics and now the main and biggest struggle is his recall. But we do have some long lines to work with so we’re going to get back to the basics and use his kibble to get this sorted. And from here on out we’ll keep it as a part of his daily exercise as I realize mental exhaustion is just as good as physical so combined with his daily walks and play session’s he should be good. 🤞🏽

I don’t know why people are offended. I appreciate your info and if it’s the E-collar/ prong collar then that’s their problem. Reality is some dogs need it, sometimes or all the time depending on their energy levels and environmental stimuli etcetera. So thank you and please continue what you’re doing. Easily your best video yet Andy! Watching this I picked up so many simple concepts I've been overlooking. Question: I noticed you held your leash behind your back with your opposite hand. Can you go into a little more detail on this method? I started doing this early on in Zeus's heal training cause i found it was helping but stopped when my club president told me I should never do this but never really explained why or offered a working alternative.
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger 2 жыл бұрын
Love hearing that! Thank you! 🙏🏼 I like the leash behind the back because if the dog understands leash pressure, it keeps him in perfect Heel position. Of course this only works if the command has been built with food properly first. I can then pressure or correct if I need to without my left hand/ the dog seeing it. You could always go back to this method and just not do it at club! 😆🙌🏻

Hi Andy, thanks for the videos! I'm got a Belgian Malinois that is about 18 months old. His name is Kaine and I got him from a dog rescue group. He apparently has had some training, but he is still very rambunctious as he CONSTANTLY jumps on me and other people. He also jumps on the door of the house too. Every night I bring him inside and put him in his crate. In the morning, when I let him out he bolts for the door and jumps on the door. My door and walls look like hell. How can I break him of jumping on people, and jumping on the door? I feel that I need to quash this first before I can get into things like sit (he knows this), down( ok with this), and stay (nope, not good at all). He is food and toy driven. He loves to play fetch and will run and get a toy I throw, but won't bring it to me directly. I've been trying to give the toy to me by staying the word GIVE, but sometimes he gets it, other times he doesn't. Your suggestions?

Hi, always amazed by the work of you guys do! Noticed that when your dog heel's with you ,his ears are folded back and as soon as you are away from him, ears up paying attention to you. Mine does the same. Is it something wrong with that or it depends from dog to dog ?
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you 🙏🏼 Nope nothing wrong with that! I like my dog to be ‘at ease’ while heeling rather than a IGP style focused heel. If my dog’s ears pop up in Heel, that usually means something got his attention other than me 👍🏻

@@AndyKrueger the ears back is seen in IGP as a sign of pressure on the dog, whats your take on that? Love your videos 💪
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger 2 жыл бұрын
@@manueltaboadadetorres3399 Excellent question! Yes this style of heeling would not be desirable for IGP. But on the flip side, IGP style heel would not be desirable for French Ring! Ring judges are looking for a ‘natural’ walk. This is crucial to asses the dog and for the dog to be able to make it through an entire Ring 3 program. An interesting point: if you watch an IGP dog walk normally on leash off of the field, their ears are usually back, unless of course they are aroused by something (squirrel, dogs, people, etc) Ringsport sees an IGP heel as ‘unnatural’ and impractical. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely looks awesome! Just not suited for Ringsport. As far as the pressure goes, ears back CAN mean too much pressure has been applied BUT does not mean too much pressure HAS been applied. If you study my dog’s body language, it’s clear that he’s bursting at the seams with drive and performing with heart and enthusiasm. For example; a dog’s tail can be wagging right before they engage in play with another dog OR right before they attack another dog. So, tail wagging CAN mean ready to play but doesn’t necessarily ALWAYS mean that 🙏🏼

I am training my dog but I live on a farm and she is never in a crate and she has a lot of room to run and etc. and have mental stimulation. Do I need to crate her while we go through a few months of training or is that a lifelong thing or what? Also, she sleeps on my bed or on the floor next to my bed at night, is this bad. Think of it like putting a car in park. If you stop it, and put it in neutral, you're probably good. But what if you're in a rush, and forget about/don't notice the grade/slope. You run off, and your car rolls down the hill, crashing into who-knows-what. It doesn't roll away if you put it in park, and you have to take it out to get moving. Stuff happens fast, and comes out of nowhere. I like knowing my dog's not moving, until i want him to.

Do you have a video on the how to train or teach down, sit but from far away. So if he were to retrieve something and on his way back I say down, or sit my dog just keeps coming back to me. If I start him.in a down or sit position and I walk away he does a bit better but then gets up to comes towards me. Which way is best to keep practicing or should I keep doing both.
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger Жыл бұрын
If the dog has good positions close to you, adding distance should come easily. If the dog seems to have good positions close but can’t do them with distance, I’d say they are not good enough close 👍🏻

You mean the ‘free’ command? If a dog has very good heeling with a lot of experience I release them when appropriate. But a new/ young dog in training I completely separate structured walks from free walks 👍🏻

Come, sit, stay...the holy trinity. Sprinkle in some leave/drop, and a wackload of exercise. That's the recipe for a good companion. Praise when they get it right, and consistent correction when they don't. The dog knows how to do it all. You just have to calm down, and figure out how to tell him. Stay calm, confident, and consistent. Exercise before training is a good formula, too. A tired dog is a more responsive dog.
@AndyKrueger

Thanks for the comment! Great advice, I agree with everything except the last sentence! I believe a dog full of energy is just as responsive if not more responsive than a tired dog. But every owner and dog are different! 🙏🏼

I guess it's more beneficial if you're just starting (puppy/new-to-you) training your dog, or going to be working on new skills. Most I've seen are less distractable, more willing to take direction, if they're tired. But a trained dog, I will agree. There's probably not going to be a noticable difference. Keep up the good work!!

It is not their fault that your attempted training methods are not effective. Having this mindset will set you up for a lifetime of failure and frustration with the dog.
