i'm not a pilot but hope to be training soon. What i'm wondering is how to you navigate from one small airport to another if neither one has VOR?
@CaptainMac8 жыл бұрын
Mark, That's a good question with a somewhat complex answer. It depends on a few things. How far apart are the airports? Are there VORs within range of either airport etc...If the airports are close together you can use dead reckoning. If there is a VOR within receiving range of the airports you can navigate to a fixed radial. (That's a little hard to explain here, but it's not that difficult to do). Lastly, when I trained for my private pilot license, I never used VORs. For VFR navigation you use landmarks on the ground as waypoints. You mark them on a chart and fill out a navigation log which you use to calculate how much time it should take you to navigate from one point to the next; how much fuel you would burn and so on. When you first start your flight training you will be learning VFR (visual flight rules) navigation; VORs are used for IFR (instrument flight rules) navigation. I hope this helps a little. Best of luck to you and let us all know when you start your training. There are several real world pilots who subscribe here. Most of them give me a hard time for what I do wrong ;-) but they are all willing to help when they can.

Jim Miller I am using FSX too and I have to say the tutorials for beginners are aweful and you don't learn much. I would recommend you FS 2004. The VHF spectrum is defined as those frequencies between 30 MHz and 300 MHz. UHF runs from 300 MHz to 3 GHz, HF is 3 MHz to 30 MHz, MF is 300 kHz to 3 MHz, and LF is 30 kHz to 300 kHz. There are other bands of both higher and lower frequencies, but these are the ones of most interest to pilots. If you look at wavelength, LF runs from 10 km to 1 km, MF is 1 km to 100 m, HF is 100 m to 10 m, VHF is 10 m to 1 m, and UHF is 1 m to 10 cm.

Then enter your departure airport and destination airport. You hit enter after you put in the destination airport code. There should be a magenta line from the dep. airport to the destination airport. Click and hold on the magenta line, then drag it to which ever navaid you wish to use. On that line it should show the course and the distance. Hope this was helpful.

nice man, this is a really good refresher video for me, as i haven't done VOR - VOR flying for a long time. Question... do all aircraft have this old school navigation, like the jets and new GA aircraft? do pilots still use VOR in everyday flying?
@CaptainMac7 жыл бұрын
All modern aircraft are equipped with VOR navigation equipment, but it is not a common form of navigation anymore. For large commercial aircraft, VORs are just part of the flight plan; VOR to VOR navigation is accomplished with the Flight Management Computer (FMC).

@Heimo7848 жыл бұрын
Hey there, great video! One question concerning VOR-navigation: why airplanes do not use a kind of scanner which is automatically searching for all VOR-frequencies available at the current airplane-position and a board-computer collects all radials and calculates the actual position. This could be a nice backup for GPS-navigation without loading pilots ressources with searching and entering of frequencies. Both results could be compared and rated depending on available accuracy. Kind regards, Heimo
@CaptainMac8 жыл бұрын
Heimo784 thanks for the compliments. My first thought in answer to your question is weight and space. The VOR transmits a signal which is received by the navigation radios in the airplane. To accomplish what you are suggesting would require an additional piece of equipment to scan and a computer to process the information along with a display to show the results. All of these take up space and add to the weight of the aircraft...both of which are at a premium, especially in small airplanes. RVAN or GPS navigation was, and still is, supposed to replace ground based VOR navigation and ADF Navi aids...however, whether or not this will really happen remains to be seen. Hope this helps a bit.

Great Video! Question? what does each tic mark on the compass represent? is it 5 degree increment?
@CaptainMac8 жыл бұрын
Assuming you are referring to the tic marks on the compass rose of the VOR, then Yes...5 degrees each. However, with an aircraft or handheld compass it may vary. It's hard to see on this aircraft, but each clearly visible tick mark is 10 degrees. I would guess that the smaller harder to see marks are probably 2 degrees on this one.
