Andrea, have you tried making jam with the plums? It comes out wonderful. You wash them and you do not peel them nor take the pits out, if you dont want to., or do it when it is done. It is delicious.☺️

We made jelly after juicing the plums (that video will come out soon), but I haven't made jam with the whole fruit. I think next year I'll try that.

I'm just learning to can, so I'm not trying to find fault, just confused by one of these steps. Why would you need to sterilize the jars and lids before using them? The plums you're putting into them aren't sterilized (and you're handling the jars without sterile gloves after sterilizing them). If the canning process is sterilizing the contents of the jar during the processing, aren't the jar and lid getting sterilized automatically at the same time?

Ok I know this has nothing to do with canning lol but I seen your dogs skin and the exact thing happened to my dog! The vet suggested we use dog food where the first ingredient is meat, and in a month he had a beautiful coat again and barley itched! Hope this helps :)

Hi andrea, Before anything else....andrea congretulations to your pregnancy! I am so, so happy and exited for you and wish u a healthy, happy belly growth! Unfortunatly i only have one boy and lost one baby but my pregnancy was by far the happiest time of my life! I felt so useful and whole (makes sense in english?) Your baby is so lucky to be born into such a loving family and judah and solomon will be great buddies!!! All the best for you from my 💟! Thank you so much for teaching us! Some questions that might sound stupid but i have never done it before and would love to try! Do you close the pot while processing? I have a really high but narrow pot from my grandma, so if i use really small jars could i do two layers as long as there is an inch of water on top? Do i have to refill the water as it evaporates? What's the difference between pressure and water bath canning? Is it just preference or will one last longer in the pantry or is one or the other just for fruit or veggirs whereas the other one is just for meat or so? Haha, many questions, sorry! I hope i, at least make sense in english! My granny used to put fruit and veggies in glasses with a rubber ring, in german it is called "wecken", i used to help but not enough that i would remember😉! Thank you so much for the effort and time you put into your videos! Say hi to everyone of your beautiful, nice children, your husband and last not least knuckles🐶! Sry, this was long! Greetings from austria!!!! Ooops....and snowball🐇😊!!!

Pressure lets you get up to higher temperatures, so it can preserve things that are are harder to preserve. With the right pressure canning system you can even can meats. With just boiling water you can only do fairly acidic or sugary things since those don't need quite as high a temperature to preserve them. You can get exact temperatures and boil times for different foods on an agricultural or university website.
@TheMillsFamilyVlog7 жыл бұрын
You can cover the pot or leave it open. Yes, you can layer jars as long as the top layer is still under water. If you're doing a lot of batches of canning, you will need to add water to the pot at some point. If I'm doing a lot, I'll keep a kettle of hot water ready on the stove to add so it doesn't take as long for my canning pot to heat back up to boiling. Water bath canning and pressure canning have the same shelf life, but pressure canning is essential when you're processing low acid foods to ensure all the bacteria in the jar is destroyed. The only way to safely can meats and vegetables is with pressure canning. Fruits and tomatoes are safe with water bath canning. (I'm going to do a video on pressure canning with an electric pressure canner, which makes it super easy to do.) I will tell everyone 'hi' and I know exactly what you mean about pregnancy being such a happy time. I feel most like "myself" and just at peace when I'm growing a new life!

can you use pure juice for canning. I tend to buy canned fruit in juice rather then the syrup ones. but would like to try canning myself once I have my new kitchen in with more storage. I live in the uk and we don't have basements here in most houses :-(. so not many houses have food storage rooms.

I was reading if you put some white vinegar in the water the jars don't discolour while your processing them , not sure if that's true. I'm going to give canning a go. Can one can pears? Xx
@TheMillsFamilyVlog7 жыл бұрын
I've never tried that! Yes, you can do pears. I've got a mound of them I'm working on from my dad's trees. I don't peel them, though most people do. Dad's pears are small, so I cut them in quarters and remove the seeds. Then I pack them in the jars just as I did the plums and add the syrup.

Andrea Mills thank you I will do that xx

Andrea what types of items do you can each year?
@TheMillsFamilyVlog7 жыл бұрын
We do apples (as applesauce or pie filling), grape jelly, cherries, pears, green beans, raspberry jam and strawberry jam from what we grow or pick. If I get a good deal on peaches, I like to can those. Sometimes I can things just for the sake of trying it, like ground beef. I got an electric pressure canner this year that's so easy to use (as opposed to my stove top model) that I think I'm going to really expand on what I make. I'm going to do a video on that soon.

Andrea, I ordered a steam juicer from Amazon after seeing your first video about it. I am like a kid with a new toy! It has really speeded up my process and saved me a lot of cleaning time. I have made crabapple and muscadine jelly, and have juice frozen for lots more. How do you use the plums you canned in syrup?
@TheMillsFamilyVlog7 жыл бұрын
We just eat them as they are, just a side dish. Sometimes I puree them for baby food. I'm so glad you got a steam juicer. It's a game changer! I don't have a purple kitchen during grape season anymore. :)
@tiffanygreen94707 жыл бұрын
I think I want to get the steam juicer because my grandparents grow a bunch of grapes where I live but I have never made anything with them. And would love to make wine. Have you ever heard of tomatoe wine I wonder if you could use the steam juicer for that.
@TheMillsFamilyVlog7 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of tomato wine, but I'm sure the steam juicer would work. How interesting!

Andrea Mills I don't think it is very popular but I have heard it can taste very similar to grape wine. Where I am in ohio up against the lake wine is very popular

What will you be using the canned whole plums for? Plum jelly is my favorite. I made it one year but then the tree died...sigh. 😶
@TheMillsFamilyVlog7 жыл бұрын
We'll just eat them as they are as a complement to meals. I also use them for baby food. I squish the plums to get out the seeds and then puree them with my stick blender to feed the baby.
@djterry12187 жыл бұрын
I thought you had to boil or cook the fruit or the contents of the jars before putting them in the jars before putting them into a hot bath.

You can do it either way, depending on your goal. I prefer to pack raw fruit because it's simpler and faster.

Hi Andrea :) I could not find a place to ask an off topic question so I will put it here. Please delete it if you feel it will draw or create unnecessary conflict. My hubby and I have been on an herbal journey for sometime now and we just decided not to vaccinate and limit unnecessary Dr. Visits. I have all of the byod books as well as a few of Dr. Christopher's books. I live in a large Mennonite community so your ideas and belief system shared here are not out of the ordinary at all to me. My question is this: What tools do you have in your arsenal when your family needs medical attention or a child gets sick? What do you do for flu especially littles ones, strep throat, croup or rsv? What happens if there are complications during daddy assisted birth? In what cases will you seek the attention of medical professionals? Just wanted to pick a likeminded brain. TIA!
@TheMillsFamilyVlog7 жыл бұрын
The thing that I've learned over the years is that most issues resolve themselves without any particular treatment whatsoever. I feel that _not_ treating every little thing has given us much better immune systems. I think a virus may have passed through the family a week or two ago because a couple of kids had stomach aches for an afternoon, two had a sore throat for about a day and Claudia had a rash by her mouth for a day. We didn't do anything other than observe that it seemed that there's was a bug and then it was gone. Because of that, I can't really give any specific things I'd do for those illnesses because we just genuinely rarely get sick. When we do, I just observe unless someone feels really cruddy and then we'll break out the herb books and make up a little something to help them along. Only two or our kids have ever had an antibiotic (before I started down this alternative path) and half of the kids have never even had a pain reliever because they've just never needed one. So I guess I'd have to say that perhaps letting bodies go through the process of fighting on it's own makes them much stronger and healthier in the long run. I guess I'd say acute injuries or life threatening illnesses are the types of things I'm so thankful for the medical profession's expertise. In cases of run-of-the-mill coughs and stomach bugs, I'd do nothing unless someone was really miserable and then we'd use our herbs. When Thomas broke his arm, we were glad to have doctors to set it for us. And, on the birth topic, I know it goes against conventional wisdom at the moment, but birth is a normal, physiological process that I think proceeds best and most safely when unhindered. When an animal is observed during birth, she's much more likely to experience complications and humans are no different. Many very caring medical professionals are terrified at the thought of women birthing unassisted because they've witnessed some very heart-wrenching complications. The trouble is that, unless they've given birth unassisted themselves, they've never seen a normal, natural birth. Birthing away from your "nest" in the presence of strangers observing and even assisting surrounded by the equipment associated with "complications" is, by definition, extremely unnatural, even when done without drugs. So, while in one sense their fears for the unassisted mother are justified by their experiences, in another sense, their fears are irrelevant because their only experience with birth is birth that has been "complicated" from the moment it began. However, if during a birth at home, a actual medical need arose, we'd call an ambulance and be ever so grateful for professional medical care. I have a playlist of birth videos if you'd like to know a little more about how we do things.
