One of the legends about their origins is pretty fantastic, actually. Even aboleths are loath to admit that they do not remember a time when mind flayers didn't exist, and aboleths remember the birth of the gods. This is because, by some accounts, the mind flayers were the absolute dominant force in the universe, having enslaved all other races. Then, because of either the heat-death of the universe, no more available hosts, or a massive insurrection that threatened their existence, a small refugee group used future-tech to travel back in time to the beginning of the universe, where they were rather pathetic compared to the great empire they left, and they slowly renewed their species. So the story is actually a paradox... the mind flayers appear from the future, weak and pathetic, and over the course of history get more powerful and more powerful until, in the far future, they reign supreme over the whole universe. Then, when their existence is threatened, a small band of them come back from the future to appear at the beginning of time. Rinse and repeat for infinity, living the same historical course over and over again -- a parasite that can't survive their hosts domination or enslavement.

"[T]he inscrutable mind flayers are the race that aboleths come the closest to fearing. The aboleths do not remember the genesis of the illithid race, not even in their racial memories. As far as the aboleths know, the illithids simply appeared from nowhere, and that makes the aboleths uncomfortable. The origin and capabilities of the mind flayers are unknown. Of course, the reason for this is simple: Mind flayers came to the world from the distant future. In a way, the aboleths and the illithids are like cosmic bookends: two similar races with similar goals, one from the ancient past and one from the doomed future." -Lords of Madness I like to push the comparison further: I interpret mind flayers as distant descendants of aboleths who lost their racial memory long before building their empire. It's not explicitely canon, but I think it would be cool.
@fuzzwobble5 жыл бұрын
Drow and mind flayers often work together. Drow hate fighting mind flayers because dark elves live in a constant state of fear and paranoia, so illithid mess with their sensibilities a lot due to their mind powers. Mind flayers hate fighting drow because they are naturally resistant to their psionics due to enchantment save bonuses and spell resistance (remember that magic/psionic transparency is default). Add to this that the drow can't destroy an illithid commune without huge losses AND the illithid can't hope to destroy a drow commune without huge losses, in either case likely causing their own society to burn, and they almost always truce using economics. The drow provide sapient beings from their raids, and the mind flayers use their powers to assist in subduing and training slaves. Old Underdark books state that "The Illithid don't intend to spare the Drow, but they are satisfied to leave their destruction til last." which is a testament to how solid the arrangements are. Some mind flayer communes may well entirely subsist on 'payments' from larger drow cities for services rendered.

6:27 I have a theory as to why that's considered embarrassing, one that also explains why no aboleth remembers the mind flayer empire, and why they claim to be evolved aboleths, even though that's a few steps down. So you know how aboleths regenerate after bodily destruction, can enthrall mortals, collect memories endlessly, and have photographic, inter-generational memory, all because of their massive brains? And you know how they want to overthrow the gods? And you know how Gods like dealing out karmic, ironic punishments to those who wronged them? My theory goes that one day, the aboleths enacted their master plan, but failed to everthrow the gods. Because they just respawn around the brains, the gods couldn't destroy them, so they cursed them; the gods separated the aboleths' minds and bodies permanently, making the mind controlling eel part just worms in a brine pool and the ever-memoried eternal brain part into the elder brains. Separate from their form, the elder brains can die, and separated from their brains, the worms have to infect and enslave another being, eating brains to survive, or be fated to be just a neolithid, a nonsentient beast that is the only thing left of the abolethic majesty they once held, and is as such, embarrasing to the nth degree. Then the gods shoved them out into the far realm, where they came back earlier in the timeline, and possibly made an empire that was wiped from existence by the Shrek Elves.

Unless you happen to be a particularly dexterous thrall. Then you end up with the job of massaging the Elder Brain, while it feeds you feel-good thoughts and shitloads of dopamine.

I played a whole game where the players started at level 20 and it was fucking glorious,the players myself included were all very experienced,the reason why we were at level 20 is because we needed alot of skills in order to deal with the Eldritch horrors and incredibly powerful aberrations that our DM had in his setting,like we had a level 20 soul knife mystic join our game for all of 5 minutes before his character got fucking annihilated by having one of his own psychic energy blasts bounced back at him by a mind witness,my character was half and half,he had 10 levels of blood hunter (order of the mutant) and 10 levels of fighter (gunslinger) I used a sword mainly,but I could also use a 10 shot revolver which I refered to as "big iron" (real original I know) so I could attack 3 times,action surge and attack another 3 times and my dm allowed me to add my crimson rite to those attacks,he also allowed me to add my crimson rite to my bullets which was pretty epic...

You confused Gith with Zerthimon.
@jonathanjoestarwithpluck49305 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Campbell if memory serves, Gith was the one that led the revolution against the Mind Flayers and hence why the Gith are called the Gith. After she disappeared though, two leaders arose, Vlaakith the Lich Queen who led the Githyanki, and Zerthimon who led his followers to Limbo and who’d eventually become the Githzerai.
@malcolmcampbell39125 жыл бұрын
Zerthimon figured out how to break the mental control of the Illithid. He also served as a spiritual leader. Gith was the warrior and lead The People in battle. When the Illithid were defeated Gith wanted to kill the rest of them and conquer the universe while Zerthimon disagreed. The pronouncement of two skies ensued and a battle broke out in which Zerthimon was killed and the people divided into the Githyanki and the Githzerai.

Read The Unbroken Circle of Zerthimon from Planescape: Torment. It's beautifully written and not very long.

I knew 70-80% of that and still I found the video very useful, for it put everything into some kind of order and I also had some laughs. Now what I really need is the aboleth video. I'm running a campaign with an aboleth mastermind.

If mind flayers created ropers im telling the gith where they live
@supportyourself38615 жыл бұрын
No, they made urophions (the nightmarish version of roper that stuns you whenever it grabs you while being 50 feet away and eating a brain per turn) Luckily this doesn't exist in 5e I'm playing 😫

There's also Alhoons, which are mind-flayers that can use arcane magic. Everyone hates them because they're _individual_ , ew. Some of these Alhoons can apparently become liches as well. That's literally what the wikis call an "Illithilich". D&D is wonderful, you guys.
@ninjawiz79325 жыл бұрын
Actually, mind flayers that use magic are called mind flayer arcanists. Alhoons are basically a bunch of arcanists who got too impatient to become liches the regular way, so they became undead spellcasters with a shared phylactery.
@supportyourself38615 жыл бұрын
Yeah, um... (sarcasm intensifies) Yes, I like the idea. It's nice to have a lich who can additionally stun the whole party and eat your bran 😆

in 3.5 they weren't evil. The aberrations handguide said so. They are just terrified of the Elder Brain.

And in 5e the elder brain is messing with them but they have NO idea. Rip.

I learned a lot in this one. Almost as much as the truth about elephants. I only wish it taught me what mind flayers think about flumphs. Or what flumphs think of mind flayers. Or elephants.
@supportyourself38615 жыл бұрын
Idk what do mind flayers think of flumphs but flumphs totally suck psionic powers from the colony to feed without them even knowing and not doing any harm. So, you know... :)

The whole gith thing could have been easily resolved by not enslaving giths at all. If they really do loop every time then they would've realized that the gith slave thing doesn't work. So either they just big dumdum or the time leaping is a one time thing.

I like to treat Mind Flayers like the outside context problem they are. One day the party watches a shooting star in the sky. Within a week, a village calls for aid, saying something is wrong. People are turning up with holes in their heads, empty skulls, with slimy residue around the holes. There's also an odd overabundance of 'Tadpoles' in the local pond but eh... The party decides to stake out the village that night, and witnesses the end of an attack, and watch the figure zoom off into the night. Chasing it down they find a crater, with a pulsating stone. The average player would definitely kill the Mind Flayer. Probably the stone too. But the pond is still full of the baby flayers. Soon people who fish there come back weird. Them and their families become shut ins. Long story short the pond becomes a elder brain pool, the village becomes a Mind Flayer Colony, and your fantasy world is getting hit with aliens.
