Genie is freed from imprisonment. Genie immediately casts planeshift to go home and begin his plans of torturing and enslaving the people who captured him. Genie may or may not also buff the fuck out of that other monster so it has a good chance of ripping their asses open.

I never realized most of D&D's monsters are straight out of the DSM V Also when I was a player I did once run into a trapped Jinn. It offerered me whatever I desire in exchange for freedom. I did what it asked and my wish was neither it nor I could ever be a prisoner against our will again. The Jinn laughed and left. I thought little of it, just glad it didn't kill me. 4 adventures later I died...only I didn't because that same Jinn decided being confined to whatver afterlife I was facing was imprisoning me. When i implied I was now in his debt he said of course not, we are now bound in our freedom. So I think that character may be immortal now by accident.

Funny enough, lichdom is no longer off limits to player characters. In Curse of Strahd, one of the vestiges in the Amber Temple will just give you the knowledge of how to become a lich, the only prerequisite being the ability to cast 9th level spells.

I was prepping for Curse of Strahd just recently and I could be wrong but I recall it saying the character needed to be evil aligned and have 9th level wizard spells and if they did turn into a litch the DM got control over that character still cool though

Hardly. He goaded the genie into a freebie escape from the cave, then the genie saved his unconscious body, counting a mimed nod as his "second wish" - one for one. Sure, he hesitated in freeing the genie as he promised, but A) he later fulfilled said promise without prompting, and B) Aladdin at least considered the option, as the genie stated that nobody else had ever done so. Genie himself was willing to forego his freedom to reinstate Aladdin's princedom, but was instead freed as originally promised. How is that "abuse"?

My eldritch knight's father was a retired veteran teaching at an academy. Efreeti babe waltzes in all casual like they're all beneath her (cuz they were, to be fair) looking to improve her status through the old Efreeti tradition of noble wishes. Find's dad and decides he's probably a good lay. Easy one night stand. Ask's dear old dad what he'd wish for. Otherwise a content a simple warrior, he wishes for a challenge. She laughs, says "As you wish" and vanishes. Months later, baby fire genasi shows up in dad's living quarters. Raising me was his challenge. Considering my fancy for magic over swordplay, setting many things on fire over the course of my young life, and eventually butting heads with him to the point that I left as a teen to make a name for myself as a freelance without his blessing, I'd say he got what he wished for. Mum only showed up like twice in my life, both times to judge my worth and teach me a sprinkle of magic to keep things troublesome for dad. Shame I didn't get more sessions in with that character.

In a one shot I played an air genasi who was raised in her father's palace, but she ran away to make a name for herself on the material plane. She wanted to be a dancer, but the world we were playing in, everyone was racist against non-humans, elves, or dwarves, so she ended up joining a group of other misfits to make their own guild. She ended up essentially being Daphne from Scooby Doo.

I have an idea for a pact of the Genie Warlock. Basically, they’re an Earth Genasi who hates their Dao dad for ditching their mum and stealing most of her wealth in the process, but one day they encounter a Dao who greets the Genasi as their uncle. This uncle of theirs also despises the Genasi’s dad because he has more wealth than him and constantly steals the spotlight. So they both agree to trade wealth for fame in a respectful way so that the Genasi has the power to be a hero and get recognition for them and their mother, and a third of the money they get from heroism goes to the Dao uncle so he is richer.

Slow down there sport, nobody said you remember when you were not a genie, it is more like you die but your soul can’t get to whatever plain your soul was supposed to go to when you died so it just says fuck it and reincarnates on whatever elemental plain you were on. You could also end up any number of other entities native to that plain. Point is you won’t be you once you reincarnate as a genie.

I'm currently playing a pact of the genie warlock, where the pact made transferred the genies mind into the body of the mortal he was bestowing power upon, as a way to free himself from his vessel. Of course, this massively decreased his amount of power, and fractured his mind into very broad and very random banks of knowledge, but for the time being, he is free. In this time of freedom, he met a party and has been learning what life is like for a mortal. Social etiquette, morality, ect. He is also learning what it's like to be the weakest of a group, meaning the others party members enjoy making fun of how clumsy and incapable he is. Its lead to some very interesting character moments, namely when he went out of his way to free slaves from their former masters, feeling guilty that those same slaves were taken and imprisoned on a ship named after his own legend.

Interesting tidbit: In 4th edition Efreet couldn't grant wishes... But could be compelled to. However, they are so rich and powerful (networked) that when compelled to grant a wish they simply use their assets to do so. Wish for a Palace? Well he could give up just one... Want someone to fall in love with you? Love potions are easy... Want to be King? Hey, I know a guy, a few mysterious boating accidents and your golden!

It was a baby aboleth our bard convinced to come into our pocket dimension and stay for a bit. He was going to try to raise it to be good to prove to himself it was possible for an evil race to redeem themselves (the bard was an incubus). To deliver the aboleth I used a magic item to open a gate from his place in our demiplane to the Merids aquarium and thought at it "I've found a place with plenty of slaves."

Kind of a bummer how underdeveloped the elemental planes and genies are. I like genies in mythology a lot, but they're so one dimensional in the Forgotten Realms. I hope that we get a module dedicated to the elemental planes or at least one or two of them.

Honestly once you know everything about the Elemental Planes you start to feel that they are too complicated.. and all this for a plane that the players TYPICALLY won't go to and if they do they certainly won't stay. Now if you want a boring plane the Positive and Negative Energy planes are that, albeit on purpose (they are meant to be a plane of nothing but positive and negative energy... and while there are SOME locations in it... it is mostly empty)

I'm pretty sure a show like critical role and other homebrewed games could flesh them out. The plane of fire could be a volcanic area besides the city of brass, but powerful magic causes fire to course over the surface, the plane of air is composed of vast sky and cloud islands. The largest cloud island has the City of Silver where the sultan and his subjects live alongside their servants who are surprisingly well paid and accompany their masters on teips to the prime material plane. Yet wearing enchanted armor and such could make traversing the elemental planes easier. Yet seeing these planes fleshed out could allow new playable races too.

Make' em different! I'm making an open-world seafaring campaign and I have a royal Marid that invites himself to the highest tier social functions around the plane - not because he's invested in human politics but because he's a hedonistic entertainer and nobody can safely tell him no. He's moderately benevolent, if a bit erratic and impulsive, so the party generally has a good time when they see him. He doesn't fly into a murderous rage all the time because being nice to people makes him feel good, and it feeds into how people praise him for his generosity. Boom. The genie social feedback loop.

A couple of my friends play DnD. One player asked the DM what would happen if they came upon an already trapped Djinni, and offered to set it free in exchange for being his friend. The DM said the Djinni would be flabbergasted you were willing to give up so much power for friendship, and would immediately become your permanent best bro.

Just thought about an adventure that has the party being hired by a marid. The marid collects tales of adventures cause he knows that he was an adventurer in his pat life and wishes to know who he was, so he sends the party on a quest to find out who he was

I had a genasi character that was created by a wish spell. Her mum was infertile and in love with a djinn and wanted to be a family. Didn't work out sadly. She suffered the typical fate of an adventurers parent.

Funny you mention Efreeti making good campaign villains because my last party colluded with the King Djinn to perform a coup d’état on the Sultan of the City of Brass. It involves accidental genocide of the entire Kua Toa species and their goddess and was all in all a pretty hilarious and hard fought affair. After it they put the race of the Djinn in power essentially giving them 2 planes to rule, took the Phoenix the Sultan had, and made ourselves bitching landowning nobles with a pimped out mansion in the noble area of the City of Brass. It’s a very VERY long story though lol 😂

Greywander no I did it because I know how the internet is and that more people will focus on the unnecessary trivial detail of me not having the French accents on the damn word that I obviously don’t know the language of than the actual content of the comment. After today I will absolutely not remember how to spell that with the accents and shit. Maybe that’s how you are and what you want but not every single person is that way.

​@@trexdrew Yeah, I know how tricky it can be to keep track of the accent marks in French. "Coup d'etat" would also be fine, in my opinion. I only included it because it was technically the most correct version, but I don't expect anyone to go through the necessary effort to type a character that doesn't appear on their keyboard, unless it's absolutely necessary. On the topic of the OP, though, it sounds like you might have an interesting story there. Do you have it posted anywhere, or have you thought about posting it? I always love to read or listen to interesting RPG stories.
