Gaijin goomba actually made a Tanuki race thats really cool. A mundane polynorph, a limb speed, and the ability to use your balls as not only a carrying sack and weapon but also as a spell component replacement for a certain gold amount.

One of my favorite stories about a tanuki is when one got into a transformation contest with a kitsune. The tanuki claimed that he could transform into an entire imperial procession, to which the kitsune called bs on. However, when the tanuki got out of view to transform, along came an imperial procession. Frustrated at the notion of being beaten, the kitsune jumped onto the palanquin and stomped on the roof in an attempt to dispel the tanuki's transformation... but it turns out it was an actual imperial procession and the guards killed the ktisune.

In some modern stories, they actually have tanuki and kitsune as friends. There's very cute comics about kitsune and tanuki (who also have a ton of merch) and if you ever watched The Legend of Raikou (which got an infamously bad dub and switched the kitsune inspifed character from man to woman in a number of dubs... yeah), the two Team Rocket members Bashou (Hun) and Buson (Attila) are based on kitsune and tanuki... Hence Bashou's androgyny, beauty, and sharp fox-like eyes, while Buson's stocky (but buff and manly!) and always wearing shades... Buson's also, despite the both of them being very deadly and dangerous, the sort to encourage kids to run away because they're "too young" (... don't heed their warning and they'll kill, though), Buson also is so straight-forward, kids insulting him about his appearance gets him so mad he loses his temper and breaks stuff. He's very much an open book emotionally, compared to his stoic partner, and has a veeeery rough manner of speaking (he sounds the most yakuza-like of any TR member in the anime), but a lot of it is also rough masculine speech of rural/working class men, this is often a trope with tanuki characters too, to be portrayed as honest, country bumpkins. ^^;; He's also the one who works on the mecha because folkloric tanuki make good blacksmiths! Bashou and Buson also artificially create storms and this works with kitsune controlling electricity and fire and tanuki controlling water and rain in mythology. They are human characters (as far as we know~), they were just designed with these youkai in mind and it's written in their character design sheets. ^^ (I rambled so much here because they're a special interest, sorry!!)

If you want to sound cultured: Us westerners automatically stress the middle syllable, which is why the Tanooki suit and such is spelled that way. ta-NEW-key. But in Japanese each syllable (called mora) gets the same amount of time. Remember back to music class and clapping to the beat? Tah-New-Key. English plebs: t'NUUUU-key (grace note, half note, quarter note) English patricians: Ta-Nu-Ki. (Three eighth notes) English tryhard: Tanuki ga omoushiroitte to omoimasu nee~!

Well; there is one in Oriental Adventure…but still lump into Hengeyokai and their gameplay mechanics tend to discourage shapeshifting into other forms besides human. Other than being stuck with Samurai movies and Kung Fu along with human centric gameplay (or wanted to keep “unexplored exotic east where western explorers would discover that locals won’t be aware about…ignoring that fantasy west has not only non humans but also aware and contacted with their own counterpart)” and evil vs good races (this is why Half Orc was made, plus their “ugly backstory” due to unwillingness to make Orc playable race to maintain immersion) part of me feel that TSR might dislike furries (like Kenku was only playable in 4E), ot afraid that it might get accused of Usagi Yojimbo rip-off (plus attracting “those fans” as well).

I actually wrote a homebrew tanuki race myself. ...I had to remove the things about their balls because "balls = sexual = being creepy" sometimes, but they can transform into objects, get richer by replicating gold or silver coins they have, become giant using concentration and they have a little canteen full of alcohol that they can get drunk with.
