Tbh this unlocks a lot of things that DM’s can use against you that most don’t want to or don’t want to track. As was already mentioned rogue waves but there’s so much shit on the sea that can just end you even while you’re in decently sized ships. It opens yourself up to a lot of different challenges.

Naval usage for the horseshoes is a good idea, but they'll still be severely range restricted. Your horses need to rest, and as others pointed out, four inches above the water isn't enough to protect you from hazards, nor provide a good place for your horse to rest (can they even rest while wearing the horseshoes?). Furthermore, will you be able to carry all the supplies you need, much less a place to comfortably use then? It'd be like flying a stereotypical space fighter into deep space-- even if technically possible, you really want a larger ship that you can, like, live on, and would have sufficient life support and supplies. I'm also not sure how effective levitating horse archers will be against boats, but it might be an effective strategy. Nonetheless, they would be incredibly effective for Marine Calvary operations. Whether they're effective or not for inter-ship combat, they would devastatingly be useful in Normandy type situations, where you can send them in to attack coastal defenses whilst approaching with your main infantry barges-- or even defending against marine invasions. Imagine your enemies are trying to land on the beach, but you can send in agile horse-archers to harass their vessels as they approach. Also imagine how revolutionary they would be in freshwater contexts-- when you're fighting on or around a river or lake.

Gotta combine the Horseshoes of a Zephyr with the Saddle of the Cavalier. I had that combo on my paladin's Find Steed mount in Rise of Tiamat. There was apparently supposed to be a situation where you need to get a McGuffin out of a body of water, but when you do a hidden creature tries to drag you underwater to drown you. But since my mount had the horseshoes on, it couldn't be submerged, and due to the saddle, my paladin couldn't be dismounted. So it just... didn't work. It was sitting there trying to drag me and my horse down, and I was just like, "Yeah, so...I gotta go. See you later, I guess." And we just trotted off with the loot.

All I'll say is that I was in a campaign once with multiple engineers, and 1) it was announced at session zero that there were only two Immovable Rods in the entire multiverse, and more could not be created without destroying one of the existing ones, and 2) it finally made sense why Sovereign Glue is a Legendary rarity item.

Our party, when we played in the Isle of Dread, used an alchemy jug, a metal shield, and Heat Metal to deep fry mayonnaise. This would be our only food source for several seafaring journeys. We also used a ring of waterwalking on the tail of our horse, then tied a rope to it and had a horsedrawn canoe. I had a sword named Orrectus that would point towards platinum, so when we fought basilisks I lay down a trap of bird meat stuffed with platinum coins. When we fought the basilisks I closed my eyes and my shortsword would point towards the basilisks. That campaign had some other fantastic magic item uses. A fun story about the Pipes of the Sewers: In my current campaign, at the time of the story, we had 3 party members: Andrew, the human fighter (my character), Eobard, the (probably) human sorcerer and Sprocr, the goblin alchemist. Andrew found the Pipes of the Sewers somewhere in the sewers of the first town, and, since he had proficiency with flutes and pipes, he attuned to them, because "why the hell not?". Quite a few sessions later, Sprocr learned how to make pscychoactive drugs with only a few ingredients. In the same session, we had to infiltrate the overtaken town of Tilverton in the name of the King, so we could steal a few documents, granting us a generous sum of gold. But none of us were especially great at stealth, so we decided to make some distractions to draw some of the enemy guard away from our objective. By distractions I mean throwing a few bombs here and there, killing a few guards at key positions in town, and just generally causing some mayhem. Now, here come the pipes in play. Andrew decided to play them, just to see what happens, expecting to summon a few swarms the guards can deal with relatively easily. I rolled a nat20. The DM asked one of the other players, who was in another campaign where they were clearing the sewers of Tilverton: "How extensive are the sewers here?" To which he replied: "I still don't know, but my other party has been stuck in there for 13 sessions and the DM said we're only a third of the way to the halfway point." And so goes the tale of how an amnesiac fighterman and a crazy gnome alchemist covered the entirety of Tilverton with billions of angry, meth fueled rats.

I don;t know if this idea ever broke containment, but a portable hole has two very very powerful uses. 1) The arrowhead of annihilation. That's an oldy, not my idea. But you make an arrowhead that stuffs a portable hole into a bag of holding on impact. 2) The Magical Girl Transformation Chamber. Glue (not sovereignly) a bunch of papers to the inside walls of the hole's chamber. Put a glyph of warding with a buff spell on each, make the activation for them a series of if/then situations. Spell 1 goes off when you say "by the power of peace and love I will turn you into a bloody pulp" and the next spell has a trigger of the first spell going off and so on. Note that the glyph of warding spell lets you stack concentration spells (so you can have things like fly and haste and tenser's transformation and tasha's otherworldly guise all at the same time), and the restriction on moving the glyphs is canceled by having them in a stationary demi-plane.

Magic items are fun. I like to toss in some homemade flavor items that aren't all that useful for combat and stuff, but add to the flavor of the world's magic. Here are some I've made & given to parties: * Magic Seashell - Ask it a question and hold it up to your ear. The player rolls a die. If the result is even, the seashell responds "No". If it's odd, it responds "Yes". * Water Wand - It's smaller than most wands, making it perfect for a small creature's hand. It holds up to 10 charges. Spend X charges to squirt water X*5 feet away. If submerged, it absorbs water regaining 1d4 charges per round. It can also be used as an arcane focus. This was created to be the in-universe equivalent of a child's watergun. * Boot of Speed - This boot adds +5 to your speed, but it only speeds up the movement of one leg, so you need to roll Dex saves to not fall prone. It's not cursed, just poorly crafted. *Teleporting Belt - If wearing this belt, you can spend a Bonus Action to teleport the belt up to 10 feet away, along with your pants (or skirt, or kilt, or whatever). * The Invisible Ring - This ring turns Invisible while worn. (It does not effect the visibility of the wearer or anything else besides itself.) * I mixed in some spell scrolls together that were super old and barely readable, but still held their magic. Two of them were Message & Sending with clues for where to find some great loot. The others were spells that I created for these scrolls. Because of how the words are worn away, each one looks like it could be a scroll of either Sending or Message (and there was an image of them all that I gave the party). These were those other spells mixed in: - Massage (Abjuration) - Causes all muscle tension in the target to be immediately relieved. - Fanning (Evocation) - Creates a series of cool breezes that each last for 1 second. The spell's duration is 1 minute. - Rending (Transmutation) - The target gains advantage on their next strength check or attack roll to tear something within the next hour. - Mess (Transmutation) - Causes non-living items within 20' of the target to be flung into the open space around them, creating difficult terrain. - Sunning (Evocation) - A spotlight of sunlight passes through solid objects to reach the target for 1 hour - Sausage (Conjuration) - Summons enough cooked sausages for 3d4 meals. - Soaring (Transmutation) - You gain a Fly speed of 60 with Hover for 1 hour. - Sanding (Evocation) - The nearest wooden item to the target is immediately sanded expertly to a perfectly smooth finish.

Our party had to escape the premises of a tower pretty quick and everyone chose a different method. One used Levitate, one used a parachute, one took the stairs, and I opted for leaping from the roof and climbing into my own Bag of Holding on the way down. Luckily the party found me in the city streets below before I suffocated. I also met a cool dude in the astral plane while I was in there and we met up later in the material plane for a quest.

So, my most creative mundane item use was for a bedroll. My dm put me and my party in an orphanage where the doors were weighted to close behind you, and the layout of the orphanage would change every time they did. I just started jamming bedrolls into door frames, and keeping the layout from changing. It became such an in joke in the campaign that I enchanted my bedroll to be a returning bedroll, so I could get it back every time I jammed it in a door as a joke.

My favorite application of magic items is in one dungeon as a special puzzle mechanic The most recent example is in a “remote control stone crab” it doesn’t attack and can only pull/carry 10 lbs It can squeeze through cracks in the walls and through rock piles My personal favorite part of the dungeon was when my players got attached to the crab but had to send it through a wall to have it hold down a button to let them through, emotional goodbye speeches ensued only to realize that the door they walked through looped back to where the button was on the other side of the wall

Another use of the Ring of Spell-Storing: since it holds its stored spells indefinitely, you can use it to get around spell-slot limits. Just before taking a long rest, use a spell slot if you have any remaining to place a spell into the Ring that you expect to need in the future ('Shield' and 'Cure Wounds' are solid candidates); the long rest will give you back the spell slot(s) that would otherwise have gone unused, and if you use the stored spell first when the need for it arises, you've saved a spell slot that might still be useful for other things... even if it's just putting the spell back into the ring at the end of the day.

Favorite kill in a One-Shot. Me and friends did a silly little one-shot where they fought a juiced-up Tarrasque with randomly rolled magic items. One of them got the bag of beans. During one part of the fight where it seemed like the party were about to wipe, the person with the beans, giving up sort of, managed to throw one into the Tarrasque's mouth. What happened is a magically appearing bottomless gout of oil began to spew up and out of the Tarrasque's throat. The players then ignited the oil and blew up the Tarrasque's insides, near ending the fight.

In 3.5, the item "Quaal's Feather Token: Tree" states that a tree springs into being. Unlike the 5e rendition, it didn't specify that it had to be on the ground or planted. On top of this, any falling items fell 60 feet automatically. Since the token was relatively cheap (around 100 gp), our party would buy around 10 at a time, then give them to the wizard. During fights, the wizard would fly 60 feet into the air and summon The Tree, which would instantly drop on anyone standing under it.

One party I DM'ed for was basically the go-to magic item test group. I would set up a one-shot whenever more than one person wanted to play and I had time to DM, which ended up with these ridiculous hooligans creating the following scenarios: One player with a Familiar would load everyone into a Bag of Holding and then throw said bag over basically any obstacle, then have the Familiar get them each out of the bag on the other side. This one was done in our full-fledged campaign and ended up de-railing a solid 40% of the obstacles I had before they decided it wasn't fun anymore. It isn't a magic item, but one of my problem players would habitually use the "soil or clean clothing" feature of Prestidigitation to soil anyone he didn't like's underwear, and then eventually upgraded to holding clean underwear hostage by only stopping the Soil when he was paid a considerable sum. He also used Minor Illusion to create numerous mounds of various gross substances over the course of the campaign. He ended up creating a hilarious scenario where his character was caught wankin' it to a Minor Illusion of a naked person. I made him roll to determine exactly who it was and he rolled a 1 because I guess karma and I ruled that it was the person who walked in on him. It was fun getting payback :) This also isn't a magic item use, but one of my players convinced a boss that they had switched to their side and used Haste on them (the requirement for Haste is that you're willing), then immediately dropped concentration. The effect of dropping concentration on Haste is that you lose your turn, which made it a really bad day for them, seeing as they had no minions in the room. That same problem player I mentioned before decided to torture someone once, using that one regeneration item that allows you to grow back limbs. It was NOT a fun time for anyone involved.

To be fair, we could just sneak through places with Pass on its own, but between the PCs and the one sometimes more NPCs in the party, we have 7 or more people still rolling stealth checks in that case. So It's more economical to have less people doing so at a +10 than more. So we concocted a scheme where the people who can Gaseous would do so, then flow into jars with open lids. Since our DM ruled that we still need to breathe even while we're misty. BUT, that means that the other party members can carry us in those jars, and that lets the gaseous members ignore the 10ft movespeed inherent to the spell. This would probably also be good for sneaking in party members who can't be seen in a certain town, or when you have a slow wizard paired with a tabaxi speed monk. Or just use the bag of holding and find some way for people to breathe in there, such as Bottled Breath or Breathing Bubble. -One of the characters in previously mentioned campaign has issues with Common as a language, and the other languages they know have certain restrictions to how they can be used. So the character will borrow a Psi Crystal (basic telepathy) to express themselves fully when they need to, while still actively trying to learn Common through use otherwise. -Any Feather Token with a large enough item inside it can crush people. The most common ones are the boat focused tokens, but those need bodies of water. But it doesn't specify what kind of "body of water", how big it has to be, or how long it needs to be or have been there. If you don't have Create Water or some other spell method, use a Decanter of Endless Water and tell it "geyser". -Major Image requires any creature wanting to try to disbelieve it, to spend an action investigating the image. Make a giant roaring dragon, and force that entire group of guards or raiders or soldiers or whatever to spend their entire main action disbelieving your dragon, eliminating their turn UNLESS they attempt to go around it instead. Apply this to any magic item that does illusions barring Hat of Disguise. -Peasant Railgun. You're welcome, and my sympathies to your dm. -Band of Loyalty. Use whatever method you prefer to make it seem like a good idea to put it on to your target. Make them unsaveable. -Bag of Bounty. Make a traveling food cart and feed 45 people a day, with a Charisma build so that you can charge for royalty level meals. Retire. -Stuck in a mudpit, sandpit, or other dirty place that is causing movement issues? Carry a Cleansing Stone, which may very well allow you to vanish the muck or sand as soon as it touches you. -Decanter of Endless Water again. It can produce salt water, and has no charge limit or restriction on how often it is used. Salt the fields, make a saltwater steam boiler, turn a nearby lake, pond, or even swamp into the Dead Sea.

An idea I had, but haven't had the opportunity to do, Requires a book of Flesh Golem, an alchemist's jug, and a portal to the Feywild. Make the golem, find a suclded cave, and give the golem the following instructions; Every 24 hours, and 1 millisecond, Start another timer with the same duration, Then take the jug, empty it as much as you can into a set of barrels, Then go dormant until the new timer ends. Then you go into the Fey, wait one day, return, and then go back, repeat as many times as you want. Due to the Feywild's time manipulation, (and I did the math) every 7 days jumping between the fey activating the Feywild's time shenanigans, ~403 days will pass for every week worth of jumping. So you can get 403 quarts of oil, or 100.75 gallons, or 806 flasks, or 4030-8060 fire damage per 403 material plane days, 7 you days doing this. I'm unsure if this works, but if it does, do with this information as you will.

A very long time ago, friend ran a campaign where the PCs and cannon fodder NPCs were put into a underground doom maze for the enjoyment of a rich nobleman, think Squid Game, but with random items as "gifts" for the players. So claustrophobic Battle Royale. Everyone was happy with their knives and crowbars, one player was going gaga over a revolver he picked up. I ended up with 50 gallons of potable water in a barrel. Everyone thought that this would nerf my high Str character, but Int was tied for my best stat, and the water ended up being more useful than the rest of the group's gear combined. From memory, we used it to: hold the end of a rope while the PCs crossed a gap, hold down a pressure plate and break a deathtrap, extinguish a wall torch and allow us to harvest the oil that fueled it, delay pursuers by making stone steps slippery, and comically smushing an adversary who tried to attack us from the bottom of a stairwell. Game ended when the DM moved out of state for college, but the "Swiss Army Water" still lives rent free in my head

One of my players (the fighter) had the other party members use a Staff of Flowers, a Staff of Birdcalls, and some other stuff to help the fighter propose to their character's gf. It was very wholesome.

The Headband of Intellect on a monk with a bladesinger wizard dip is actually pretty wild. Since you need a free hand to do martial arts anyway, bladesinging can really boost your monk-iness - raising your AC, movement and giving advantage on acrobatics checks, all while netting you the Shield spell and tons of utility

So fun fact I have discovered a use for the alchemy jug in combat using, specifically the mayonnaise option. Here was the setting: Party found an ancient underground kingdom with some evil giants caught in a stasis field that we had to survive a set number of rounds against. I'm the party cook and have an alchemy jug. Problem is I want to grease the floor under the giant's foot to make him slip but the jug only makes on quart of oil. HOWEVER it makes 2 GALLONS of Mayo and a large ingredient of mayo is oil. So instead of an oil slick we made an mayo slick and the giant rolled mid and had to treat its initial movement as difficult terrain. Just goes to show, knowing ingredients is a helpful tool

In the very first campaign I DMed, my players got ahold of a Tree Feather Token (basically a little feather that can instantly grow a huge oak tree). They got some treasure to lure the dragon they were fighting out of his lair, tied the token to an arrow, and fired the arrow directly underneath the dragon so the tree would basically impale it. I needed a moment.

I used the Dust of Dryness to create water bombs. Intended for them to be used like a 3rd level tidal wave but DM made them way more powerful for whatever reason. Marble of Liquid Storage to store acid. Intended to break into places by melting locks or as a big "fuck you" if thrown at someone. Used a couple Instant Fortresses and some other stuff to essentially "Rods from God" and army. Probably a few other things I'm forgetting.

Quibble: Warships and other things weigh in at hundreds of tons, and the moment the ship collides with an Immovable Rod, all that weight is applied as force to the rod. So contrary to popular use, no the Immovable Rod cannot punch holes through massive objects and the like. If something weighing 8000 lbs or more collides with it, the rod immediately stops working the absolute moment it would otherwise hold the object back. You could probably use it to lock the ship's steering wheel in place though.

If you get a big Bag of Devouring as a Grappler Barb or similar build you can grab someone and shove them into the bag and most DMs will agree that since it has a DC 15 Str Check to pull themselves out, it could be at disadvantage due to being pushed inside. If they do go inside, they are eaten and their body is instantly destroyed.

Mayonnaise can seal against air so if slathered over a parasite in your skin, the creature will eventually have to surface for air. Mayonnaise could be used as a temporary lubricant for cartwheels or adventures trying to make a tight squeeze. Mayonnaise could be applied to a squeaky door to ensure a stealthy entry. Mayonnaise could be strategically used to easily slip a ring off the finder of a noble. Truly the most versatile option.

If you get enough unbreakable arrows you can start lining everything you own in sheets of them, but more importantly you can use them to hold closing temple doors, dump a bunch of them into the mouth of a sleeping monster where they’ll become a big issue in 2-5 days, or learn telekinesis as a bard and pretend you’re Yondu

My Rogue uses an Alchemy Jug to create bottles of lamp oil just about every night. A lot of things have been burnt, including an entire pirate fortress that we then proceeded to use a Water Elemental Gem and summoned the elemental to smother the oil fire. Before that we just used the gem as like a lava lamp lol

I once put an immovable rod up the back of an enemy's full plate mall and clicked the button. Completely removed them from combat because they couldn't reach the button to deactivate it. I would also use a couple of them to scale walls. Good times.
