I strongly recommend you to secure your rods with rod straps, especially when trolling (same for the landing net). I got into kayak fishing a few years back and that was one of the first (expensive) lessons I had to learn. Also, no one ever wants to voluntarily capsize, but it does happen. A friend capsized in waist-deep water, lost 2 stellas and couldn't find them in the murky waters with muddy bottoms.

all strapped up now haha plus all the gear all set in its place too so fishing should b a lot quicker i hope

Cool video, next time you should try using a trout jigging rig, its like a string of 2 or 3 flies that you drop to the bottom and slowly twitch your rod, its quite effective on those lakes

yea basically a trout sabiki haha i would like to try those deeper lakes and try jigging with metal jigs for the trout.

If you feel its a really hard day, and the water is warm (>12 degrees is warm for a trout) its often because the trout are sluggish due to heat. Some of them go foraging rather than hunting / chasing lures. In those cases (also from a kayak) I try fishing a bit more passively (worms, troutbait, etc on a small low-key float). Those cruising trout near the shore that won't chase a lure will often pick up a freelined maggot or worm. In this vid, you are making your life and fishing success way harder than it needs to be. You are risking losing fish basically at every hook up you've shown because your landing gear is not prepared. Especially on hard days, I make sure I always have my landing net slung around my back or in any other way ready to grab, because I definitely want to make sure I can land that one fish that changes a day from a failure to a success. Losing a fish due to angler or tackle failure is something that can be avoided, increasing your overall success as an angler. Also, the same goes for unhooking pliers or degorgers. You risk hurting yourself and make the fish unnecessarily suffer by not having those ready. It's upon us anglers to protect the stocks for ourselves and the future, part of that is carefully releasing the fish. Don't take this the wrong way, I have learned a lot about NZ fishing from you, which helped me tremendously when I traveled to NZ to fish there. But I think keeping organized will make you a better angler so I hope you dont take the critical feedback the wrong way. Tight lines :)

If you ever want to catch trout, fish the utihina by the stadium and just cast your spinner down stream starting from the bridge going down

far out for real? haha lol

Go up the ngo stream while the lake trout are getting ready for spawning and use a veltic spinner

You lost those fish because you didnt hold the tension on the rod. when you took the rod out of the rodholder the line went slack because you pointed the rod towards the front of the kayak. Make sure you always have a bend in the rod or you will just keeping losing fish. Same with flyfishing, too. Trout are not as forgiving as snapper.
