I have been playing golf for more than 60 years and I didn't become a good putter until I adopted three things. One "don't" and two "dos". Don't become mechanical, putting is 99.9% feel. Get a comfortable grip and stance, and three, hit the ball into the hole. Simple as that.....don't make it harder than it is.

I have been frustrated with my putting lately (too many 3-putts, missing too many 3-4 footers). But I went out to the course early yesterday (before my round) and practiced with a metal yardstick and a mirror, and worked it out. My stroke was ok (stayed on the yardstick), but I think I was standing too close to the ball; eyes over/past the ball. I putted much better during my round and shot my lowest score of the year. Amazing results, now dead on from four five feet, and even long putts are gimmees. confidence increases with each round, on my way to breaking 100 on a regular basis. Thanks from Michael, an on and off golfer for 67 years, my Grand Pa used to tell me that some of the best putters in the world were women, some of whom only played on the putting greens that were part of many public parks in those days.

Another life-changing lesson. Putting putter head flat on green alone made my putt a lot more stable and saved many strokes. Coupled with proper grip, ball position, and using core with elbows in, YES, I'm putting like a pro, just like you said. Thanks a million!

Hi Aimee, great lesson and as usual easy to remember and put into practice. I don't know if anyone else has found it easier to control their abs versus their shoulders, but I sure have. Aimee, I have a bad back and I sometimes use a broom handle long putter when it is really bothering me. Do you have a tip for using one when the anchoring rule changes at the beginning of 2016? I would add how tight you hold the grip as I tend to hold too tight. I lift the putter straight up in front of me with the head slightly lower than my hands, then lower to set up.

A draw is nice but not necessary. Buy a can of powder foot spray and use it to hone a center of face swing. No need to overswing when you hit the center of the driver. You'll be in the fairway a high percentage of the time with more distance than you're used to. Seriously, work on the center hits.

Phil Mickelson advises to not stand directly over the ball, but slightly behind the ball to give you a better look at the hole, and ball path.

He putts with an arc, not straight back and forth. Find what works best for you. Key thing is keeping your head still, try not to turn to watch ball as it comes off the face.
