A huge recomendation is to get a personal AIS-Transponder. Its so much easier to find a person in the water if they have one of those. They are usually equipped with blinking light and raconfunction too. That way you can find the person by visual, radar and plotter.

I loved Teals statement of ‘now you have a Big Boy sail’ ! I’m seeing so many cruisers going to Precision Sails these past few years, they must be very good at what they do. Catalina is a perfect stop on your travel South. This time of the year the crowds are there primarily on the weekends, so gettin a mooring ball should be easy. Hoping that Emma’s visit ashore with her Aunt turned great.

I have always been happy to see you wearing PFD's. The modern ones are almost unnoticeable to wear and if you are in a habit of wearing them, it becomes automatic like wearing seat belts. Congratulations on your beautiful new mainsail! I can't wait to see you under sail. I'm sorry about that woman and the hypothermia. I know how that can shake you up, hearing all that. I've heard similar with much worse results. You are absolutely right to wear your PFD's. It may not be fashionable or even convenient. You may be able to swim but if you hit your head, or some other part of your body you may not be able to stay afloat without it. You always hear about fatalities and that they weren't wearing their PFD and it always sounds crazy that they weren't. We assume it must have been rough, or they couldn't swim, some extenuating circumstances and its so often not the case. The question to ask yourself is "am I wearing your PFD?" When I really looked at this, I changed my habits. You are such great parents to make sure Emma gets a getaway.

Teal I noticed how, shall we say, the mature old mainsail looked when you raised it at the beginning of the video. I am a big fan of the C.S. Forester books about " Horatio Hornblower ". I remember when a lookout in the channel fleet would spot a ship's sails on the horizon the captain could tell right away if it was a British ship or a French ship. If it was a Royal Navy vessel it would have dingy looking sails because they have been out blockading the French fleet for a long time, keeping them bottled up in their home ports. If it was a French ship it would have bright, white sails because the frogs hardly ever left port and were a lubberly sort. By the way all the A&E/BBC made film adaptations of the Hornblower novels are available here on KZbin. I think Emma would enjoy watching them. If she likes to read she can also find all the Audiobook versions of the novels as well. I learned all my nautical terms by reading those books haha.
@leonaessens43993 жыл бұрын
The "frogs...?" That one of those nautical terms you found in the Hornblower books? And what exactly is a "lubberly sort?" I think you're a bit unkind to the French here. They have a long nautical history just like the Dutch, the Portuguese or the British.
@OnboardLifestyle3 жыл бұрын
We plan on downloading a ton of books, podcasts, audiobooks as well as standup comedy. This crew loves the standup comedy during the doldrums. Lol
@Bill237993 жыл бұрын
@@leonaessens4399 Leo I was just using Captain Hornblower's own terminology there. and Lubberly was a reference to the French Navy being like a bunch of Land Lubbers because the British Naval Blockade at Cadiz and all her other major ports was keeping them from exercising their crews. As well that Napoleon had raided his Navy for all their most experienced cannon crews to fill out his Army Artillery units.

Why did you not go for a flat top sail? You have a modern mast position almost at the center of the boat (that's cool for such an "old" boat). But that means you have a small mainsail and a flat top would have given you a bigger sail area.
@rl38983 жыл бұрын
