I live in Vancouver, BC. In the Georgia Strait, about half way up Vancouver Island, there is a military operations area. When it is "Hot" you have to avoid it. A friend of mine was sailing through the area when a submarine surfaced very near him and advised him that he should clear the area. He said that having a sub surface near you can really get your attention!

You've visited all the spots along the coast that I visit on land to the see family. As a side note, when you left Ventura, you passed Ormond Beach. It's one spot where beach, dunes, and lagoon are all found together. My mother, Roma Armbrust, was instrumental in getting the California Coastal Conservancy to purchase the land and save it from development. The road leading into the park was renamed Roma Armbrust Wetlands Drive two days before she passed away.

About six years ago I was on Amtrak going to Oregon from Israel and watched a missile launch where you guys are now. What a wonderful scene, surrounded by the US Navy and waiting for the U Air Force to launch with the US Coast Guard keeping a close eye on you. Wishing you many, many blessings and safety while on your short jaunts down the coast.

I didn’t realize Amtrak went to Israel.
@yonatanbenavraham65983 жыл бұрын
@@gobic1319 Well if you landed in LA and want to go North you can use Amtrak. They have not made a 12,000 mile tube train yet but if all the people who hate Israel are on the West Coast it will never be made. I Landed in LA and it was less expensive to take the train to Oregon than it was to get five different flights from LA to K Falls Oregon. While on the way I saw a missile launch. I saw many of them in Israel but to see one in the USA was new and different.

What many don't realize is that the weapons range begins right off the beach at Pt Mugu and extends all the way out past the channel islands. The exclusion areas are determined by the weapons being fired on any particular event. Most of the delays experienced during these events is getting the range area cleared so that a safe event can happen.

Very interesting. My 3rd to last job in the Navy was providing components for the sub-sonic and supersonic targets that launch from Pt Mugu. It's best to stand off the Mugu range due to the targets and the missiles that the Navy fire at the targets have the potential to go erratic before self destruct is initiated. Keep up the Great work!!! There is also a huge rang south of LA and offshore from SD where ships practice and become certified for overseas deployment (may ship, subs, aircraft doing war games). I'd check the Notice to Mariners to see if any of the water you are traveling has a range and if there is a range or warning area, that it is not "hot" during the time that you will be transiting. At least you were called to hold up for a missle launch. I got called on the radio by an aircraft carrier in Norfolk that was trying to avoid running me down... 3 days after I bought my boat. Fun times
@bbrainweb3 жыл бұрын
Many many years ago (1960s) , I was stationed at Pt Mugu. One of my divisions responsibilities was to maintain range safety by keeping boat traffic out of the test range when a launch was scheduled.. We used aircraft equipped with loud speakers to warn boats that had no radios, or refused to comply. Not nearly as much boat traffic in those days as there no real marinas along the coast from Ventura to Santa Monica. We had no authority to order boats out of the area, we could only advise. If there were any boats inside the exclusion area we had to abort the launch. Some local fishermen figured this out and would ignore our warnings. A very low pass would usually get them moving.
@vandy1vx43 жыл бұрын
I was a kid when they did that to us on our family boat in the 70s and 80s. lol The Navy had a Seaking and Seaknight helicopter for that. Sometimes we would recover the Missile

On a more serious note, if the water temp is near 50F and the diver is in his upper fifties...that has caused cardiac arrest and death. Rule of thumb, be careful with cold water as you get older! If you regularly swim in cold water and you are used to it, that's another story.

Enjoyed your family adventure this broadcasts. Dealt with, U.S. Navy many times in my career as a, commercial diver in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. I was waiting for a big, Tiger or Hammer Head, to come and take a look at what you were doing. Hated hull scrubbing on vessels, hated even more pile repair work because the amount of marine growth you’d clean off, would attract the schools of fish to feed on the broken mussels oysters and sponges as well as sometimes crabs. This kind of work routinely would attract the big Tigers and Hammer heads to come in close to feed on the schools of fish attracted by the work of cleaning the ships hulls but more so on the pier repair work. A hundred times more marine growth than you could shake a stick at. Some of the mussels and oysters were much bigger than the ones you would purchase from the store to eat. But those guys were inedible, because of the pollution in the harbor from sewage leaks. If you were to eat any shell fish out of the Harbor you would be infected with hepatitis. This was a shame because some of the size of the fish I’ve seen would be record breakers for sure, but completely inedible. In Los Angeles Harbor you would get sometimes schools of baby sharks feeding off the marine growth you were cleaning. When I mean baby sharks, they were 3’ or less. Those schools would be about at least dozen. As long as the mother didn’t show up you fine, or so that’s what we would tell our selves. Working at night was even much scarier. You folks make a lovely family. Well please continue to stay healthy and breath free. Aloha. 🌺🌸🌴❤️🇺🇸

This is my first of your videos I have seen. You have a lovely boat. Your sailing catamaran is incredible. I am a powerboater but if I were to consider a sailing boat, I'd have to look at a cat boat. No tight space, claustrophobic cabin like an old school monohull sailer. That was interesting you had to pause your cruise for a missile test launch. At least they finally got it off and you could get back underway. I used to be in the Coast Guard and we often did that sort of security operation for Space Shuttle launches out of the Kennedy Space Center and for live fire missile launches out of Patrick AFB. Safe passages to all of you.

That was probably the new Sea Slammer missile the navy wants to develop for dropping small near surface magnetic mines, skimming explosives, or chain fired micro-missiles. The idea is to take out smaller patrol vessels or larger ships. Damage the engines and the ship stops, mines around it mean it can't be towed away, meaning it takes longer to get that vessel in to be repaired. Skimming mines can strike multiple ships but are most useful when you have ships bunkering, or catering a ship like an aircraft carrier or VTOL platform ship a d of course micro-missiles can attack one ship, or multiple ships but each missile or batch can be programmed to take different routes, thereby overwhelming the CIWS or point defense weapon systems most ships employ. But then again, it could have been just a test of an existing SLM-2 or Mark 48 Harpoon

Dad and I went to have lunch while my teacher and his wife went to visit their son. And while were were eating we saw a missile launch.
