Not all change is progress. I moved here in the 1980s, when Basingstoke was a boom town. Wages were good, houses were affordable and you could choose a job from a number of job offers. Now, sadly, agency work, temporary work and zero hours contracts are the norm, and housing to buy and to rent is ridiculously expensive. Traffic levels would suggest that many people who work in the good jobs here, commute in from outside in new expensive cars. I seriously think Basingstoke is dying, and the young people we should be encouraging with well-paid careers and affordable houses are all leaving for higher pay towards London or heading west for cheaper housing. The employers who provide those jobs are all moving west too.
