your a true craftsman! when I was a kid my dad had a couple of fiberglass dowels, & I asked if I could make indestructible drumsticks outta them, he said sure that's a good idea, we didn't have a lathe (sp) but he had a drillpress that we laid on its side & I shaped em like that. in the end they looked like real drumsticks but not exactly identical in taper & bead, but I was proud & he was too. unfortunately they felt awful with alot of vibration transfer to the hands. I gave them away to someone who liked em.

@Rockin_Ross6 жыл бұрын
With the right core, you could pull it off. The store bought one would come apart within a month of playing. Also, you have the strike angle to consider. For a good, solid hit, you need the face to hit flat against the head. A cube would end up hitting on the top edge and might damage the head. Your suggestion has got me thinking though...

@johnchase85108 жыл бұрын
Fantastic work David, and it looks amazing too! Going to check out the tone in a moment As a fellow woodworker with a few more grey hairs, I hope it is okay to offer a couple of suggestions? Since you have the face planer and the hand plane (excellent to see you set it down on her side!), it is possible to skip right from the band saw to the hand plane. True up 3 sides and do your glue-up, tack the stock to the backboard and shave off the tops with the hand plane just enough to get it to run through the planer. (Dirty tip #1) You can glue rails to the backboard, which will drive the assy. through the planer with all kinds of rough, lumpy faced stock and after a bunch of small passes, you have flat, serviceable lumber. The one other thing I though might be good to mention, if you care… Using a drill press for any task that involves side pressure will wear the bearings/bushings, and it will eventually destroy the critical accuracy of a good machine. If it's a beater, or if the work you do on it does not include tight tolerances and a bit having a 1/64" runout or worse does not matter, rock on. Okay, off to check out your cool beater… Thanks!
