Axis and Pearl pedals in this video showing bass drum double strokes. I show my settings and my technique.
This is also called heel toe and is great for playing fast metal or death metal.
Check out my other videos for drum tutorials and how to videos on things like rudiments, fills, solos and other lessons.

@@drummonkeystuffuk1875 very cool!!! It's all about the settings, once they are dialed in, it's funny how easy heel toe is really. i find the tight head with a stuffed drum really makes it trigger accurate though.

I go for the same setting. It took me a long time but 2 years ago I'd come up with the same setting as yours. I had to take apart my DW9000 pedal just to get it to go super low like you were talking about. It feels much better like that and has increased my speed.
@beyondbetrayal
@beyondbetrayal 7 жыл бұрын
right on man. I find that is the best for doubles, but it makes it tougher when doing single pedal stuff as i like higher spring tension for that... A constant battle haha

Great tutorial dude! I've hit a wall on my speed. For my band, I don't need the constant, fast DB but I do need short bursts in complex patterns. Some placements of fast rolls come very easily to me but certain roll timings are very hard to get at the 1/32nd note ratio I want. I plan on practicing this method to see if I can employ it in complex patterns without completely wearing myself out. Thanks man. You're a lifesaver!

I will often just do it on +he right foot and singles on the left.. so it's almost a gallop, or a 1 e and 2 e + 3 e + if you get that. But really fast :) or you can do doubles on the left and singles on the right for 1 +a 2 +a 3 +a .. I mostly do this and runs of 16ths but you could put them in elsewhere. Good luck.

It's crazy how easy you make this look. I'm an old school drummer. Always played heel up for double kick. I'm trying to learn heel toe. I have a dDrum direct drive double pedal. The heel blocks are removed. They are long boards. Is it possible to do this on those pedals you think? I'm enjoying and studying your heel toe vids.
@beyondbetrayal
@beyondbetrayal 4 жыл бұрын
I'd think so. The direct drive makes it stick to your feet. it took a while of adjusting spring tension, beater distance, beater height, foot board height, head tension to find the sweet spot.

Thanks for the response...Ive been looking into the Axis pedals and the trick Dominators..... Do you like those Laser A21's? I use these 15 year old Iron Cobras but i need to get something else. ( i joined a slipknot tribute so i need to get faster) . I feel like them pedals are kind of sluggish after trying some speedcobras the other day. I am also working on this heel toe technique after doing it the "regular" way for over 25 years.

I love the a21's.. they hit fast like the al2's but with more power. I went from cobras myself. Night and day. they will make you faster, but there is some learning curve ... sluggish will not be an issue.

@JoseMorales-jn5qw 7 жыл бұрын
thanks man... its so hard to decide which pedals to get nowadays with so many out there and with stores not carrying them all. So I am at the mercy of what I read online instead of being able to trying them out myself. I have been leaning heavily on the trick pedals but I have been looking at those A21's as well.. From zero day , how long do you think it takes to master the heel toe working on it 1 or 2 hours a day
@beyondbetrayal
@beyondbetrayal 7 жыл бұрын
2 hours a day? You'll have it down good in a month. "Master" is a subjective term. I have done it for a few years, but I could do it at gigs within a few months and wasn't even doing an hour a day.... as i said before. its more gettin the settings right than "learning it" My guitar player can sit at my kit and pull off decent heel toe... if its not working your settings are what needs to be tweaked.

I have never tried it. It will probibly work just maybe not as fast. It's a combination of the direct drive, settings, and longboards. But essentially a pedal is a pedal. You just need to angle your foot a bit more on a short board also.. I need someone to send me some pedals to try it on haha.

HAHA. Hitting the gym and about 45 minutes on the pad every day for the last 2 months has made me MUCH faster and tighter. It's all about staying relaxed to play fast. I'll be making a few more videos soon on my practice. Anyone can do it, It just takes time practicing for longer periods at about 60-70% of your max speed. Practicing my hands around 190 has made them faster around 240 for longer periods.

Hey man. Your video was great. I've seen many videos on double strokes but none showed the pearl pedals (which I just got a few days ago) and for some reason, heel toe just never clicked for me. Then I saw your video and I got it almost instantly. One thing I have to say though, which is 100% personal preference of course, is I actually have the footboard decently high on my pedals. I learned to do it like that because surprisingly I can get very fast with it and I don't have a kick trigger st the moment so it has great power. Again, thanks so much for your vid man. I love your videos. They always explain everything so well!

I love the fact that you also went into how the settings on the pedal can make a difference. Even kick drum skin tension. This is by far crucial information that is not mentioned by many other drummers explain the technique. Though everyone's settings will differ to their own, it is good that it should be utilized. It's something I have stuggled with to get greater speed, but I can only do 240 at single strokes now. I will look into pedal tunage so to speak.
@beyondbetrayal
@beyondbetrayal 5 жыл бұрын
The settings make all the difference in the world. I find if my settings are dialed in right I can play much faster and tighter. I am starting to tighten my springs a bit more as it makes me more consistent but I have to work harder for the speed. Don't neglect the single strokes if you do this. It's much to easy to just play doubles and then after a year your singles suffer.

beyondbetrayal. Thank you so much. I've watched your videos before, along with a thousand others, but couldn't make the connection. Finally I have it now. You put a link on the drummer world forum the other day, and I clicked it and watched it again. The next time I sat down on my kit, I tried it, and I can get the doubles with my heel off of the pedal. Recently I've playing up high on the foot board, actually using my heel for the first hit. That worked but not as I'd like it too. I got a good trigger today (finally) and I think I'm gonna get the heel toe fast metal drumming going. I can only do it for a short run, but I can tell this is gonna work. I tried adjusting my pedal like you suggested, but I didn't like it. As I learn the technique, your settings suggestions might be helpful. This just my second time working on this technique like you demonstrated it. Thanks again.

@beyondbetrayal
@beyondbetrayal 7 жыл бұрын
Find something middle ground. work towards the settings while still keeping your singles feeling good. when I do slide doubles I like my springs a bit tighter.. I have slowly been increasing the spring tension which causes me to have to press a bit harder but allows the head to be more loose. plus my singles are working better. It's all about finding a balance.

You master how to hit a bass drum, not actually playing the bass drum. I wouldn't focus on this technique I would rather put more effort on a technique that can be playable with and without triggers and also one that I'm more in control. It would be pretty difficult to do some complex patterns using this technique and impossible to make them sound even I rekon.

I haven't tried on short's, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. It really comes down to the settings. I use the head for rebound rather than the springs if I want to go really fast. The VDL forward is a big help on the axis pedals though.

i cant do this with loose springs, i dont know why. my springs are almost maxed out. would it help to lossen the springs progressively untill i can do it with looser springs or if i feel alright with tensions is it not a bad thing? even without triggers my hits are pretty heavy and constant

If it's working why change it? I just posted this video to show what I do. I wouldn't change a thing. There is 1000 ways to achieve anything in drumming. The end result is the sound your going for. Not the the technique you use to get there.

Does head tension matter? I'm trying this on a little v drums bass pad, the beater isn't even able to be burried into pad so I doubt there is a lot of return from mesh head. Also I don't have direct drive idk it is hard
@beyondbetrayal

Head tension makes a big difference. I could do it on a roland td20 mesh pad but it's harder on something like the pd9 pad for the kick

@@CoomerGremlinDGGfan They are so different is is hard to compare. I actually added the A21 Lasers to the mix too lol. My AL2's are shot, so I use the lasers an the demons most of the time. The Demons are super consistent and reliable, but the A21's have their own feel that I can really fly on. The best advice is to try them all and see what feels best. I am more consistent on the demons though, and the Axis feel easier to play at crazy speeds if that helps.

Do you use the same setting for the death metal and punk band ? or different for each type of music?
@beyondbetrayal
@beyondbetrayal 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting that you ask. I don't use a bassdrum trigger in the punk band so I tune my kick less tight. I also use a bit higher spring tension because of that. For heel toe in the metal band I play in socks. Because I don't do heel toe and fast double kick in my punk band I tend to play wearing shoes at gigs. (I have used socks sometimes too). Other than that I will often only play a 4 piece kit which has really changed my playing for the better. The biggest change is the kick. I actualy enjoy chain driven pedals when not playing fast for that extra power and find it easier to play loud and tight. For speed it's direct drive all day.

So drummers in metal bands do not really move their legs really fast and make every beater get one beat? It is like rolls with your feet?

There is a cheap Tama Speed Cobra at a store near by ... I hated the Axis (only played fast heel up until I saw this) and loved the Demon Drive. The Speed Cobra was surprisingly good. This double pedal is hardly used at around $140 bucks ... I have seen used Demons for 250 used. I think I’ll buy it

I have a couple questions. 1. What type of beaters are you using; wood? The beaters that came with this pedal seem a bit soft for double hits. 2. How far up do you place the beaters from the pedal? 3. What type of kick trigger do you use? I have a Roland trigger on my bass head but am having trouble avoiding quick rebound hits that are not meant to be played, but while also keeping the threshold settings on my module low enough to where when I DO want to use the double hits that it detects it if the hit is a little weak. P.S. I just got my Demon Drive earlier this week so I am definitely still learning but making good progress. Great video by the way. Thanks!!! Nick

Danmar wood beaters. Any round wood beaters work for me, I like the weight, feel, and rebound. How high depends, I will raise and lower them (1mm at a time) depending on the rest of the settings as it makes a huge difference to the feel, rebound, and speed of the double. It will help get rid of the gallop doing this. It depends on beater distance and spring tension. I mark my beater shaft with marker so I can return it to the same spot. As with all adjustments, do a SMALL adjustment on one thing, wait a bit, and do another or put it back. I have had times where i'll mess with settings all day if it's out of wack, but for the most part just do a bit at a time. Roland kt30 trigger... my drum is STUFFED and the head is super tight. that way i get a good rebound and less double triggers. I have the sensitivity pretty high and the threshold I think I put in another video of my settings. it's a balance act, I adjust my settings so the doubles hit hard enough I don't get double triggers. Technique makes a big difference too. I rest my left foot sometimes and cant have it set it off on stage. Once my lightist hits work, i'll make the threshold just below that limit. If the sensitivity is too high, you have to set the threshold too high sometimes too. retrig cancel i set so my fastest hits are registered, but not any faster to prevent double triggers.

I have a few videos where I play without triggers on my channel. If you pull them back further and adjust your springs you can get pretty consistent. Shoes will help. You won't be playing at these speeds as consistent though.

Hey man. Congrats on the new kit.. I have an ekit also for practice. My suggestion is don't even worry about heel toe for a few years. get those single strokes going. Heel toe is going to be tough on chain drive pedals. I have direct drive pedals such as the Axis pedals which make it much easier. In the long run if you start heel toe too early your singles will suffer. I did single strokes on double kick for years before making the change. I do find heel toe has made my singles suffer still and cause me to get a bit lazy.

Are your PDP chain drive? Direct drive pedals make this MUCH easier. Full disclosure I am an Axis artist now, but I wasn't when I made these videos. I don't think I would have learnt heel toe without the Axis.. Demon drives were also decent to play on bu the Axis are SOOOOO fast... Long board Direct Drive pedals are a must for this.

Make sure you are keeping time on the hats as much as you can while playing beats, fills, chops etc. It really builds up independence. Try rudiments on your feet. Lead with the left foot for a few weeks. My left foot and hand also weaker. Doing this stuff really helps.
