Jerkbait bass fishing is awesome! Modifying a suspending jerkbait to suspend perfectly is awesome too. Here's how I customize my jerkbaits to get them to suspend the way I want since jerkbaits are rarely suspending perfectly right out of the box. I hope this tip helps!!!
Thanks for watching, commenting, liking & subscribing!!!

Line type (floating or sinking) has alot to do with suspending right too. You can also add ice cubes to tank

Great idea! I've never actually checked my suspenders... I'll have to double check 'em and make the modifications. The only thing I would have done different here is put it more in the middle of the bait so it stays horizontal in the water column. Thanks for this great suggestion!

Love you videos! Keep them coming! I never used those suspend strips before and it looks pretty easy to do. What I usually do is add a split ring or two to the eyelets(not connecting them to the hook) and it adds just a little bit of weight that makes them suspend for me. By usually the split rings it also allows me to play around with how I want it to sit in the water column. (nose down, up, straight, etc...) Just another idea for those people that do not have the lead strips and need to do it on the fly while they are fishing.

First of all, I really like your videos. You have a great presenting style and a gift for cramming a lot of good info into a small space. Based on my trial and error, the method in this video is a bit flawed. As others have pointed out, temp & line choice will have an effect on perfect suspension. But one factor that hasn't been mentioned (and the biggest one of all) is atmospheric pressure. The air inside the lure compresses considerably at running depth, which has a big effect on buoyancy. Anybody who has ever done scuba or free diving will tell you you buoyancy very noticeably changes every 5ft due to the air in your dive suit and lungs compressing under the weight of the water above you. I think you would be better off doing a weight strip balance in you or your buddy's swimming pool on the line you intend to fish it with.

Those lures are suppose to have a mild float to balance out with your line type and line weight. After casting it 30yards the weight is distributed evenly to keep the lure suspending. If you add extra weight to it, it will start to sink. Meaning you will have to keep jerking or it will drag bottom sooner than how it was intended. I use them and have no problem. I think it would be more informative to use the appropriate line type and line weight those lure were meant to be tided to.
@thatsmallrockshop
@thatsmallrockshop 5 жыл бұрын
Also he needs to remember the amount of line attached to the lure in the water creates drag wich also creates a slower rise on a suspended bait.
@VeghTheHun
@VeghTheHun 7 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the depth of the water the lure is in matter? Would it suspend at 5 feet the same as 1 foot? I always thought the deeper something is the more it wants to pull upward

Another great video. Thanks. How much will the weight of your line affect the suspension?
@YouTubeFISHINGVIDS
@YouTubeFISHINGVIDS 8 жыл бұрын
+Davesto44 It has some affect. I use floro which is why I like a little rise to my bait since it sinks, plus that water temperature I fish may be cooler than the tank water. If I used mono, I'd go for a perfect suspend or tiny sink. Thanks!!!

I'm curious why you prefer the snap over a split ring. I've found a snap tends to collect suspended debris more than the ring. For some jerks, I switch out the round split ring for an oval shaped one.
@YouTubeFISHINGVIDS
@YouTubeFISHINGVIDS 8 жыл бұрын
+Rick Voigt The main reason is the ability to change my baits quickly without having to re-tie. I tournament fish, so being efficient with my time on the water is crucial. I'm generally fishing very clean clean clear water and don't run into debris too often. The oval slit rings are a great idea considering the knot can cinch down in the grooves of the classic o-ring and possibly cut into your line. Here's my video going over line to lure connections you may want to see if you haven't already...kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnnPoaylhbqeeMk There are bunch of great comments on the video that may give you a few more reason why some folks prefer a snap... Thanks!!!

1st thing I do after shaving down the underside of the front lip to establish a sharper point making it easier to Zara-swing side to side, is to add a slightly weighted calftail dressed treble (lead wrapped an 1/8" from the eye to flair the calftail) so it has a fighting chance to suspend level, plus have line on the lure. There is a big difference between the weight of mono and flourocarbon. I'd rather wrap the hook shank (front) with a little round lead for fly tying. Then adjust the front hook lead to be a slow level or slightly nose down RISER. I try to takeoff weight from the front and add some to the tail.

That's one way to do it, but it my alter the action because of the balance change. You can use smaller hooks or lighter hooks. The new Gamagatsu finesse trebles are super light but really strong. Remember, sometimes a sinking jerkbait is what they want, that's why the Rapala "Shadow Rap" is doing so well out there... Good luck!

That's how it sits right out of box, as do most jerkbaits. A nose down presentation is a natural look of a bait fish in distress to a hungry bass. The weight does little to effect the pitch of the bait, but can enhance it if you add enough and position it right...
@wendyjones5036
@wendyjones5036 7 жыл бұрын
Lord knows how long ago in the pre rapala days, Storm marketed what they called "suspenda dots" they came on a rectangular sheet and you pushed one of the round pieces out of the strip. I still have an unopened wiggle wart in a craw pattern and it's got the suspenda dot strip inside the package. You sometimes see them stuck underneath lures picked up in used lots. They won't come off after years unless you take then off. You can also use the stick on lead flashing used to decorate windows. It's heavier so works great with bigger more bouyant lures made for pike and muskie. Again the adhesive is strong and it stays in place. I wouldn't have thought to mention this as a tip because i assumed most anglers know about weighting your lures to tune them so you can get them to suspend. I forget i'm getting old and younger people might not have picked up on it. Years ago tinkering with your lures was far more common. Lures out of the box will catch fish, but when you "tune" them to your specific needs they can be killers, We used to shave diving lips to create a more eratic movement that gave it the look of an injured fish. Lures like this can give you the edge with fish that swim in more pressured waters. It's also great fun catching fish when other guys using the same or similar, lures are having a hard time but that unique movement of your tuned lure is getting the fish to hit it hard.

(1).What was the advantage of using the snap instead? (2). Does it matter if its suspending level, nose up, or nose down? (3). Where would i apply the strip on a crankbait? Belly or side? I'm new to these products, so any tips would be appreciated. Thx, good video!!

1. It allows you to change baits faster and you will save money and keep a full spool longer by not using up your line by retying as often. 2. Nose down is normally the position a dying of injured baitfish, but it's not absolutely necessary. Just experiment. 3. Dead center and just under the bill is where I start depending on the crankbait. Thanks bud! Good fishin'...

Add 40 plus yards of line to this in the water will cause the bait to have a slow rise also as the line causez drag. Theres more to this than just adding a bit extra weight.

I feel like I'm confusing myself, but wouldn't colder/denser water require more weight to suspend? Like, in my mind, your bait at the end of the video, with the suspending/slow rising in your tank, would rise more rapidly in colder/denser water. Great video though, I liked seeing the step-by-step and explanation as you went. Other vids I've watched just said "add more split rings" and that was it.
@YouTubeFISHINGVIDS
@YouTubeFISHINGVIDS 8 жыл бұрын
+Bob Hammond No, I'm confusing you. You are correct! Nothing is scripted in my videos and I just had it turned around in my head. This bait will rise more in colder water, but fortunately, I'm using fluorocarbon line (which sinks) that will help pull the bait down a hair. This a another reason why I like a slow rise in my jerkabaits. Thanks for the call out and compliments!!!

I would of put a equal lead strip in the back and front of the lure.. BC your may suspend but it doesn't look natural.. it needs to be balanced more.. the nose of the bait is pointed downward to much

The Pointer 100 is one of the best jerkbaits on the market and is designed by Lucky Craft to have nose down position strait out of the box. The angle of lure is identical after adding the suspend strips to the way it was before I added them. A nose down position is the preferred position of some jerkbaits and is the natural position of a baitfish in distress in certain water temps. This example wasn't about changing the angle (which it didn't), it was about modifying the bait to suspend.

Most jerkbait fisherman prefer to have their jerkbaits pointing down.

+Trevon Lapoint I go for slight float if I'm using fluorocarbon since it sinks. If you use mono, you might want a slow sink since it floats. On short to medium pauses, it's barley going to make much difference, but when it's really cold and you pause the bait for longer, it's more of a concern if you want the perfect suspending bait.

Just an idea to save some cash...Why not go in reverse order ? Buy the strips and cut them in MICRO strips and then add them as needed. That's what I plan on doing anyways =)

As much as a lucky craft jerkbait costs if it doesn't suspend like it should I would take it back

Even if they were manufactured identically - to the GRAIN - two lures would suspend differently at different altitudes and at different atmospheric conditions. The SAME lure will suspend differently under different conditions.

Fantastic video! Always love it when someone goes above and beyond to impart a viable technique. Bravo! Regarding the Owner Hyper Welded Quick Snap, are you using the 26lb, 33lb or 46lb size?

+Michael Micinilio Thanks! I use the 26lb for smaller crankbaits and jerkbaits and the 33lb for full sized cranks and jerbaits. I have not found and need for larger snaps at this point...
