Jerkbait fishing in cold water has long been considered a painstakingly slow process. Jerk-jerk, followed by a LONG pause often lasting 10 seconds or more. But it’s tough to fish this slow, especially when bass are scattered.
Justin Lucas thinks you can have better success fishing much faster, even down to 40-degree water temps. Justin divulges a pile of good tips, ranging from how he works jerkbaits, size and color selection, and the affordable rod reel and line combination that he uses any time he reaches for a jerkbait.

Glad to hear it Mike. They're a great lure, affordable, pretty colors, and the fusion hooks are some of the stickiest we've seen. Jerkbait season is upon us, good luck!

I went out to a lake by my house to try this out I. water temp is just below 40 degrees in an hour I put a 3.5lb and two 2-2.5lb bass in the boat by not letting my xps jerkbait set for more than three or four seconds. In total I was able to put 11lbs bag together today. thanks wired2fish for a fun day on the water

I've found jerkbaits to work great in the summer and fall around laydowns on steep banks also. You have to work'em fast and hard but if you know they are on laydowns in highland reservoirs you can search the good ones out fast then hit'em with a slower bait like a jig or Trig

Best...Best...instructional jerk bait video bar none. I stayed away from them forever because of the whole waiting up to a minute between pauses.....that got my brain all f@&ked up..."Is this fool bait fishing or cranking a lure?"....I caught my pb yesterday in 40° water doing the jerk, jerk, pause(2seconds). Also I brought in 4 fish total doing this and no one else even got a hookup. To me this jerk baits rule in cold water!

This is a great video! I've never really used a jerkbait before because I would always hear like what Justin said about people saying to let it sit, and I would rather use soft plastics for that slow of a presentation. Now I'm going to for sure try his three second method and lighter line.

@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 8 жыл бұрын
+Blake Mundle Basically anywhere from 4 to 10 feet of water... just depends on where the fish are positioned. Fish on 8 lb. line to run deeper, 10 lb. for a good all around line, and 12 if you're around heavy cover and trying to keep the jerkbait running shallower.

Some jerkbaits float. you just happened to get a floating one - which is cool. Personally, I'd save that one until it's a more active day where your retrieve is faster and it's not hitting top. +ILWoodsBoy suggested well - a suspending one is what he's using here and it'll stay down, letting you wait a little longer before that next jerk.

Cut a few inches of the butt of the rod with a saw n put new but end on it for 2.50$. Well worth doing. Just what I’ve done to my jerk bait rods. Electric tape works to try out the length.

I totally disagree with you. You have to fish the water temps, as the water gets colder if you don't slow down you will miss a ton of fish that will never bite a fast moving bait. You need to rethink the not pausing for more then 3 seconds. That's just not long enough for a fish to come check out a bait in 45 and under deg. water. I have seen days would would not get bit if you didn't pause the bait at least 10 seconds.

How about night casting , using jerkbaits?
@Wired2Fish

Jerkbait fishing is primarily a visual technique used in relatively clear water. While you're likely to still catch a fish or two after dark, it's not as productive as other techniques.

That is a normal wobbler a real jerkbait doesnt have a spoon in the front like this wobbler.
@wendyjones5036
@wendyjones5036 7 жыл бұрын
+Lucwap Gaming Yes it's very annoying and confusing to many people when bass guys call tradititonal lipped wobblers "Jerk baits". Now American musky and pike anglers call big lipless lures "Jerk baits" and originally you had to flick the rod tip in a downwards movement to make the lure glide from side to side. Those are the real deal jerkbaits . Yes you can flick wobblers around but the fact remains they are wobbling minnows like the Rapala's. Another lot of nonsens by bass men and bait companies is the new term for soft plastic paddle tail shads. Now they call them "Swimbaits". Say what! we all know "Swimbaits" were originally lipless jointed fish shaped lures, often made in wood or hard plastic, as well as a few segmented soft plastic versions. A fish imitatition in soft plastic with no segments and a paddle type tail is just a paddle tail soft plastic lure and not even close to a "swimbait". An example of a misnamed lure is Berkleys Hollow belly swimbaits, total bollocks making it sound, like you are getting something special. What they really are is unweighted soft plastic paddle tails. And all the tackle trade does is cause confusion to young and old anglers alike. It's taken years of putting lures into groups we can all understand but it seems like some out there will blindly follow whats written on the packaging even though it might be wrongly described. Like you i couldn't see a jerkbait in that film, but i did see a guy flicking around a minnow wobbler as made famous by Rapala. I assumed most lure anglers know you can work a minnow wobbler in this way besides just cranking it, i wouldn't have thought this was like secret knowledge surely. Many instructions on fishing these lures explains you can catch fish by flicking or twitching this type of lure besides wobbling it in steadily. Some wobblers don't respond well to being flicked around and they just barely move. It's all about the weighting. Anyway from now on Alphabet type "crankbaits" are now called "Shimmy shads" let's all jump on the bandwagon and make up new names just to make fishing more confusing as that's just whats needed to get kids interested in a dying sport. The tackle industry has made a lot of money out of the sport but does little in the way of putting money into promoting it to the young.

+.kayak fishing Yes very similar to the action on Rapala's "Slashbait" minnow when you flick it around rather than just crank it. One of the Sebile minnows responds in the same way and it's the weighting that makes them work like this. Hardly "secret" stuff and doesn't require a video. Kids don't even have to buy books like we did. Any and every method of lure fishing can be read about online.
