Dan, the tone of this bass in this recording is why I play bass. It’s delicious. It’s the best word I can use to describe it. And the syncopated line is like the cherry on top.

so I saw Stever Hackett last night and it was an incredible concert. The bass player got to do a 10-12 min solo and then a bit more with just him and the drummer. I commented on this post earlier but y t didn't like me saying I would try to put it on for you, kek.

Good day Dan I have to say this is the kind of thing I hear in my head when I listen to some songs learning to try and get my fingers to do what I hear in my head. Thank you for this soundtrack I think it’ll help me get to that point, major minor scales, Pentatonix and chords that’s the stuff I love thank you Greg. 😊

Beautiful StingRay! Thanks for the lesson. I have my fretboard, scales, arpeggios memorized and can read music. I just wanna learn more fluency and improv. I love listening to the kick drum on songs. Helps with the rhythm so much!

Funny how everyone learns differently. I started off improvising. Didn’t know any theory or fretboard knowledge . Goes to show doesn’t matter how you get to the destination l, just make sure you get there.

@@soulstart89 I have a guitarist friend who started off the same as you. I do believe if you have an ear for music, that can really get you quiet far. I’m more the I wanna learn how and why everything works together type.

QQ: I see your signal goes to the Avallon and then to the Appollo. Ithought the Appollo preamps are very good, do you still prefer the Avallon?
@OnlineBassCourses Жыл бұрын
They are very good. It’s just habit I guess! And I like the tone plus it’s a setup I’ve used for a long time so I tend to stick with these things with some other options to hand.

Dear Dan, it's almost uncanny. Next week, I'll be meeting my bass teacher again, and this time we'll be working on playing with a jam track. You've already provided a practice track in advance - thank you so much. By the way, I have the impression that I'm learning more from you than from my teacher. You're simply fantastic.😊 By the way, what I really want to learn and internalize is playing "outside" effortlessly. As a big fan of "King Crimson" and "Porcupine Tree," I really enjoy it when the music surprises me, preferably in a somewhat 'bitter' way. Do you perhaps have a listening recommendation where the bass alone plays unpredictably? I hope I described this correctly?😔 Warm regards, Ralf
@OnlineBassCourses Жыл бұрын
Thanks Ralf! I think if you listen to any progressive rock or jazz fusion band you’ll find bass players playing differently to what you might normally hear. Try Dream Theater, Steve Vai, Victor Wooten and bands and artists like that!

@@OnlineBassCourses Dear Dan, unfortunately, I find it difficult to explain, as I probably haven't fully grasped it myself. 🙄 A good example I find is 'Significant Other'. In the 'calm' part of the song, Mr. Levin plays a fantastic supporting bass, and when the musicians intensify everything around minute 3, the bass initially follows suit and then takes another step forward - but how does Toni manage to go even further? I can hear that something changes, but sadly, I can't discern what it is.🤔 Listening and understanding what's going on is not so easy, darn it. 🥺 Best regards, Ralf

@@ralf5489 I love that song. He does it through rhythms, technique (digging in a bit more), and playing around with note choices. Once you learn the notes you can play over chords plus practice hearing the techniques and specific changes in the bass line you can really learn loads. Especially from Tony Levin! Maybe I'll do a lesson on Significant Other...
