finally had the eureka moment. my teacher told me about modes, and i understood that each had it's own pattern, but now i understand how they are made. so i just went and picked up my bass and figured out the modes. great stuff. thank you so much.

Excellent! I'm glad you choose the four string as appose to others. It's so clear. Modes allow you to see the whole key board..

@kelleywintergreen My advice is to master the major scale in all keys. Once you do that try various variations. One good exercise is to play the scale 1234, 2345, 3456, 4567, 5678 and back down until you master that. Try other combination's. Run it through 2 octaves. Eventually the modes will become natural, at least it did for me. After practicing those exercises for a while one day I was shifting between modes without even thinking about it. I thought "wow, I can do it. I know the modes".

Great breakdown of how the modes work. This will also help in learning your way around the fretboard.

@kelleywintergreen What I mean by 1234 are degrees in scale. In C major it would be CDEF. Dorian mode is EFGH etc. The exercise is CDEF, DEFG, EFGA, FGAB, GABC all in succession as fast as you can and back down to C. By doing this you are playing 4 note sequences in each mode. Once you master this you can expand on this. After a time of doing this playing the different modes became as natural as playing the major scale. It is helpful if you shift your hand position to the new root as you go.

Thank you. This was the breaking point for me. I've watched a lot of lessons on the modes but this does it for me.

Mr Hestichs you can play dorian from any note you like as long as the tone row goes t, half t, t,t,t, half t,t.[where t means tone,half t means half tone]. so c dorian is C,D,Eb,F,G,A,Bb,C

If more people would teach these subjects in such a manner, then music theory and the modes wouldn't be such scary phrases to people. One of my students pointed out this series to me. They're simply put without talking to the listener, I like it.

Yes, but the Ionian scale (the tonic) would be Bb. So the C would be the Dorian scale because that's the 2nd degree of the Bb major scale (Ionian). Hope that helps as I am only just starting to understand it myself, haha!

Thank you,i wish had come across your teaching earlyer would've spared me a lot of insecurity,good teacher.

Without "Dorian" chords underneath, it is just a rearranged major scale, and will pull to the major tonic

@tbcass One more thing. Do you have access to a Keyboard? The modes are much easier to understand on keyboards because it's all laid out for you. I play keyboards in addition to bass and it helps my bass playing a lot.

I can't understand something about the modes, I was hoping that someone could help me? How does the C major scale still become a C major scale when you go to the Dorian mode, since it starts off on D? And then when you go to the next mode it starts off on E, but they are still the C major scale? The one thing I did notice, is that a C note will always be present in each of these modes. Can someone please help me understand this?
@rilesmcgiles821010 жыл бұрын
Late response but all of the modes for the key of C use the same notes C, D, E F, G, A, B. A D major scale contains sharps and flats.
@tetsusixteen395412 жыл бұрын
is it applicable to use dorian mode if the song key is C?

Can you play a Dorian scale on a C, or is it only for D? Im just a little confused xD
