Added some weight to the bass/passive radiators to see how much the tuning lowered. I have another plan for this box btw, but I'm not promising anything.

To my understanding, in order for a bass radiator setup to work properly the passive radiator or radiators should have much greater cone area and excursion than the original driver. For example, a 10 inch subwoofer with 8mm of xmax would be best paired with a 10 inch passive radiator with over 12mm of excursion or a pair of 8 inch passive radiators with equal or greater excursion than the original 8 inch driver. A 6x9 is close in cone area to an 8 inch driver so a single 6x9 with a pair of 8 inch radiators in a small enclosure should yield fairly impressive results.

@@MyStonerMind420 Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as one of the horde. I mess around with projects like this all time and am a big fan, I recently took an old empty dual 12 tower speaker enclosure and tested a passive radiator setup in it using an old 12"Alpine dvc type S with 1 bad coil and paired it with some old crappy 12 that I tore the magnet off then hot glued some washers to the dustcap, it sounded surprisingly good for being made out of old broken parts, my wife did not appreciate the noise and mess that I made though.

Very nice, I've been thinking of doing something similar but with these speakers and boxes. My wife is used to me and my speakers. Met her first in the late 90's and I had 2 12's in the back of a small car, which eventually changed to a medium sized car (Impreza WRX) with 2 15's in place of the rear seats. It didn't end there but yeah, she doesn't mind ;)

depending on the distance from the driver and the radiator you may be creating a cardioid pattern where the phase cancels out the other.

Yeah i was watching a video a while back where the 18 inch sub was paired with 18 inch passives and that gave a big boost in bass so maybe that's what My Stoner Mind should try.

@@mirusai kinda reminds me of a Creative Labs subwoofer. It was setup with a 5.25" inside the box with a chamber of it's own. While on the outside it's an 8" subwoofer with only a cone. No motor or anything.

well, IMO the benefit of passive radiators is not the boost in output but the extra cone control. They are not the same as ported since they have a higher roll off meaning they have even less low end extension than ported and sealed so the only time they are useful is when you are only limited by the mechanical limits of the driver and the space allowed by the box. I made a little Bluetooth speaker with 2 4 inch full range and had plenty of power on tap but the drivers were over executing on even mild midbass so I used passive radiators to keep the excursion down allowing me to give them more power overall and that is where you get your extra output. Not the box getting more efficient per watt but allowing it to take more of them. The efficiency gain is minimal at best and you butcher low low end but for certain uses, they do have there place. get a recording of both of them playing side by side at the tuning of the passive radiator. It will dampen the cone of the speaker and allow it to move less and still make the same sound (then do 15 hz lower and watch it go nuts :D)
@TimpBizkit
@TimpBizkit 2 ай бұрын
They don't necessarily have much faster a roll off but they do notch out their own free air resonance. The free air resonance of any port is 0 Hz (because if you have infinite air each side there's nothing wanting to bounce the port air column). If you can use a passive radiator system with a free air resonance that's much lower than the tuning of the box (or you can use multiple radiators with weights), then this notch should be well below where the audible output drops off, and ideally filtered out by a high pass filter.

after the weights have been installed there is a noticeable higher freq adjust vs the stock one (w/out weights) w/c is very noticeable in most human ear. 60hz up. below that freq is not noticeable in a small speaker.

It sounds like it is boost the mid woofer ranges but not the sub woofer range. I guess you just need more radiator area to keep moving that towards the lower frequencies.

I feel like you need a slightly bigger box or fill this box with polyfill(or any damping material) that should also lower the tuning effectively because if the airspace isn't enough to move properly at bass frequency you will get a drop in spl or the total sound output

So adding some cloth will lower bass frequencies?? Because im in the process of making a 7 by 2 and 2 inches wood bluetooth speaker and its gonna have a x2 10 watt amp with 2 1.5 inch 10 watt speakers and a passive radiator in the middle of the drivers and i wanna get the most bass as possible so i was thinking on glueing 2 coins on the passive radiator. Any suggestions to get more bass out of it??

hey! try to tune one of the boxes with Dayton nd 105 PS [those are the passive radiator editions] these are also tuneable with weights and i'm really willing to see and hear how those would sound in a box. if you plan on doing this, a comparison between the other passives would be cool!

For me it seems that those passive radiators are cool to watch as they wobble, but they hardly add anything to the sound itself. So porting it is.

I bet it's Americans not getting British humour. Unfortunately many of us don't get dry or more wit-based humour. It has to be more "in your face" "HEY I'M MAKING A JOKE, LAUGH!" type of funny. It's just a cultural thing. I grew up on Black Adder, Frye and Laurie, Mr. Bean, Monty Python, and a slew of others so I'm used to it. I also am fortunate (or am I) to be in a relationship with a Scot, so that helps as well, LOL!

@My Stoner Mind friends cat did the same, especially when sitting at the window looking out. The cat was legit crazy, and became the coolest cat ever after a near death expirience and some drugz from the vet. Still wondering if the tomcat turned pigeon after that, or if it tried to actually use this as a (hopless) hunting strategy...

Yeah the radiators really don't do much but give the box a bit more flex so that the main speaker can breathe on those lows,that's my guess. But one thing is for sure, you'll have a pet pidgeon by next thursday.
