Hello to all the new folks! Glad to see I gave Ren a sneaky compliment by assuming this was lip synced, and I'm amazed that it wasn't. The main reason I thought it was synced is because the audio is EXCEPTIONAL quality for just being one mic attached to his shirt -- I've genuinely never heard such quality with that kind of setup. It is also industry standard to lip sync official music videos, so Ren is really trailblazing/carving his own path by not following that standard. I greatly admire this. Welcome to the channel and please give recommendations for other Ren performances I need to watch and analyze!

I would suggest one of his busking sessions. Being interested in vocals maybe try Ren and Sam Tompkins - Earned It/Mans World/Falling or with his band The Big Push Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so hard or his duets with Chinchilla (she has an amazing voice too). There are so many good performances to choose from, welcome to the Ren Rabbit Hole 🙂

I agree with the suggestions of Chalk Outlines (live) or How to be Me (live), both with Chinchilla. Also his live busking performances of Nina Simone medley with his band The Big Push, or Man’s World medley with Sam Tompkins. Given your thing is breaking down vocal performances I recommend more of his singing based work (like the above suggestions) rather than his rap based work others have recommended (the hunger, losing it, sick boi, animal flow), which are all incredible, but less the focus of your channel in my experience (been following you a long time). Also incredible is the live medley performance with The Big Push of I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop, in which you get both incredible singing and incredible rapping.

I'd also recommend the trilogy of 'The tale of Jenny and Screech', the third part being 'Violet's Tale' which ties the first two together. Ren demonstrates what I *think* is kind of more flamenco-ish singing, it's a very odd mish-mash of styles, and whilst it's an impactful set of stories, I would LOVE to see someone break down the vocal and musical side. :) Good to see you've found Ren. In interviews, and on his streams, he seems like such a nice, quirky, grounded kid, (ok, he's 33, but I'm and old woman!), who's just been through absolute hell with his health, and is still battling every day with both physical and mental challenges. Please do give him some more of your spotlight :) Also... although it's rap rather than vocal and might not make the best video for you, you should at least watch the latest release, which is an acoustic version of his track 'Animal Flow', which is actually recorded and filmed in the back of a moving bus - no joke. He doesn't half pick his locations!

It's my understanding this is a live performance and it took him 4 tries to get it done in one take. His mic is on his collar. After being misdiagnosed for years he was finally told he has Lyme disease. he's in Canada now to try to combat the years of not treating it correctly. In "Chalk Outlines" he sings with Chinchilla and it's amazing. Thanks for reacting to it.

As the cinematographer Samuel mentioned in the Black Pegasus interview, a true one-take would be a one-shot video with no cuts, so Hi Ren is not a one-take in that sense (and the close-ups are from another take) but it was indeed recorded live all the way through which is very impressive.

This is a live performance. He likes to do live performances. His history in the UK is a busker in Brighton. He was also in a band. He was misdiagnosed with mental illness for years. He was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease, after all the damage had been done. He suffered with psychosis because of the lyme disease. He is wearing a collar mic. I would suggest Chalk Outlines or How To Be Me with Chinchilla. He also did another song 7-8 years ago when he was in the worst parts of his suffering, called Crutch. He sings in all of these songs. Ren has a gift for providing programmatic music. The Tale of Jenny and Screech and the Tale of Violet can be viewed as a trilogy. You can see how he crafts a story. He really is a modern day bard. The music, the singing, acting, lyrics, all transport the listener to wherever his mind wants them to go.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue; subsequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. Ren has exceeded his initial goal. However, his goal was very conservative and did not reflect the added costs of unforeseen surgical procedures, and treatment for additional health issues such as MCAD. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

Something to note - this was done live, it took 4 tries before they got it, any time you find a Ren song, look for the live version, with rare exception they are _that_ much better than the recorded version A little something I've put together since I found Ren's music; part person who found hope again, part music lover, part bafflement at the sheer talent of Ren & Friends, so without further ado; Welcome to the RENaissance For Bardcore - check out the 3 part Tale of Jenny & Screech If you want to dive more into the rap side of his catalogue, I'd start with "What You Want" which is a brilliant homage to the Beasties, followed with "Genesis" followed by "Sick Boy" followed by "Illest of Our Time" (this one goes after the previous one so you have some grasp of the meaning) and the trail goes from there For more rock oriented fare follow the breadcrumbs to The Big Push and dive in (I personally suggest Sweet Little Lady, Swan Song, Englishman in New York, ,'I Shot The Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop', and the cherry on top (my new favorite in this category, others are welcome to disagree but they're wrong :) "Fire" Last but not least, don't be afraid to check down the alleys, Ren has built himself a circle of talented musician friends that will surprise you and make you glad you chose to look for hidden treasure (Hint: *Chinchilla, Eden Nash, Sam Tompkins, and so many more) (Also Humble w/ Eden Nash is just pure young punk/rude boy heaven) *Chinchilla: Take 1 part Christina, 1 part Jessie J, 1 part Rhianna, blend well and pour over your own unique style, served ice cold by the baddest bitch in town (See Fingers (Live), Little Girl Gone (the official video is just *fun*), Elements, One Time, and for fun Terms & Conditions which has an 80s Madonna vibe *Gorran: He's got a pretty amazing list of tunes but the LIVE version of "If' speaks to me *Romain: If you love good guitar, Romain is your guy, but if I had to pick ONE song.. it's him on a Piano - Love Without Feelings, and his newest Turn the Lights Down

Actually, the video WAS recorded live and in one take. It took him 4 takes to get a full good take. In the last scene you can see him taking off the cables that carried the (electrified, likely via a piezo) guitar sound and his collar mic. That's his style, most of his videos are dome this way. I'd suggest you to watch his trilogy... "The story of Jenny and Screech (full)". Where this one always touches me to tears (I've been a professional Clinical Psychologist for about 25 years), that one just breaks me down. BTW... Captions are never precise, but he usually provides the lyrics in the first comment to the video. 🙂 I'm just starting to discover this artist. As far as I can understand from what I watched and listened to date, he's freaking good, intense and powerful, and his stuff quite often makes the listener uncomfortable. Really powerful. And he has a much huger and deep catalogue than I thought. It would also be interesting for you to check up his personal history. It would explain a lot. 🙂 Thank you for your reaction, I'm really happy that you "discovered" Ren. See you next time!

Far out! Did not expect you to react to this, but am so glad you are. As you no doubt realized, the ccs can't keep up with his lyrics and are often inaccurate. Ren has shot to the top of my all-time favorite artist list. He's my absolute #1. Hi Ren is the piece that introduced me to Ren almost 6 months ago now, and I've been deeply immersed in his immense talent ever since. Many of his videos are live one takes like this performance, which was recorded in this room, no lip sync. You ARE hearing the actual audio, you can see the lavaliere mic right there on his neck, and I think there may have been a boom mic above. The guitar is wired into a receiver in his pocket. This isn't opinion, both Ren and the videographer have talked about how they created this video. I haven't been this excited by an artist in decades, and he single-handedly has reinvigorated my interest in finding new music and artists. Check out Ren & Chinchilla duets next, particularly How To Be Me (another live one take). It's all singing, no rap, and it's powerful. Edited to add: Ren's not religious, but he likes the archetypes and symbols that belief systems use to describe the human condition. He describes himself as agnostic.

Ren, and his camera guy, Sam, are masters of ambient sound. He (and the sound) are in that room. The only part that is not part of the one take is the speech at the end. The lapel mike is on his collar. Great reaction. Please do more Ren, as I think he is such an innovative artist!

They did record it in the room. It's live, and they did it in one take (four tries) using multiple cameras. Ren isn't really religious, but finds the symbolism powerful. I think a good one that shows his vocal ability is him busking with Sam Tompkins doing Earned It/Man's World/Falling. His duets with Chinchilla are also a good next step for someone focused on vocals. And Chinchilla's solo work--especially her live performance of Fingers--is fantastic.

I audibly gasped when I saw this in my feed. I haven't watched yet, but I clicked as fast as I could. Super excited to see what you think of this. 🙂 edited to add: I was hoping you'd catch the mic at the end. One thing you said was that's how "music videos are done". I think you'll find if you continue with Ren that he often doesn't do things the way they are always done. 😆😂🤣 Great reaction. Thank you for taking the time to do it.

The audio was 1 take and in the room...Ren is a Unicorn. He says he prefers live (probably because he started as a busker) and he performs and produces all his own stuff (with friends). He jumps genre's he disregards musical "rules" and he believes it all so we believe him. I've become a big fan and as an older woman I thought I was going to be listening to the 60's - 80's forever because there was nothing "new". He's a bit like Arlo Guthrie or even Freddie Mercury - he knows what he wants it to sound like and he does it his way. Thanks for this.

Ren is a lyricist like no other. He fits in no genre, sings, plays guitar like a master, acts, produces his own beats and videos, and has this amazing ability to convey so much of the human condition in just a few simple words. He reaches into our brains, knows our darkest thoughts and secrets, and brings healing with empathy. He will impact the world and potentially change the music industry. Being an independent artist he can do whatever he wants. His trilogy of the tales of Jenny, Screech, and Violet are genius and showcases his lyrical talent and his incredible guitar talent. He is just phenomenal at everything he does. His buskingvis amazing too with his band The Big Push.

I'm a huge Ren fan, hope you go down the rabbit hole. As I recall, the budget for this was $1,000. Each song is quite different... Ren is amazing. He's self-taught on guitar. He has a gorgeous voice that didn't get much play here - his song, Chalk Outlines, the live version with Chinchilla, will fix that gap. (His live and studio recordings are often very different) Listening to his band, The Big Push, with their cover/medley I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/HipHop will give you a listen to his chest voice, which he doesn't use often but I think is lovely. And just a comment... we all go through hard times. While there's no contest over suffering, not all of us are told by doctors that we won't live past 30, nor do we hit a point of illness where we don't think we'll survive another year. He's had a heaping dose. Still lives with constant pain from the organ damage he suffered before he was diagnosed. It's important to listen to his work as art. He draws on his life experiences, but also molds things to fit the needs of the art he's creating. It's not lip synced. He often uses rooms to enhance his sound. Notice that when you listen to Screech's Tale.

Some background on Ren (as a Ren fan from the top of my heads so may make some mistakes): Ren struggled(/still is although is nothing like at his worst) with Lyme disease and ME for around 10 years during which he could often not leave his house for months at a time. It is for this reason that in some of his songs he alludes to missing out on life/growing up as he was just left to watch the world go by without being able to be a part of it. Even before this Ren knew he wanted to make music for as long as he lives; he has said that he just cannot imagine ever not making music and it is just a fundamental aspect of who he is that was largely the reason for him getting through the worst of his illness. (I do not think he is religious as such (as mentioned in the video) although is spiritual to some extent.) He had stem cell treatment which helped him to recover to the point that he is now although the main issue which persists is that his body still rejects most foods as his immune system attacks it so he has a very restricted diet. He is currently getting treatment in Canada in hopes to resolve this. One of the other problems which he faced with Lyme disease was brain damage which caused psychosis in which he would think that he was a test subject for aliens and things of this sort. Although his health issues are part of who he is and are of course present in much of his music they do not define him and throughout some songs he rejects the idea of being a "stem cell poster boy". Some more things about Hi Ren in particular which will probably be mentioned in other comments: Yes it is recorded with audio live in one take and you can see the microphone on him (this is intentional as he wanted to elevate the authenticity) The pig mask at the start is a motif throughout what will become his next album which each song having a different animal head attached (this point is speculative) This is the song he is the proudest of I think I am right in saying or I at least recall him saying something to that effect before its release As you have probably gathered the voice is also doubtful of doctors etc and is epitomising his health struggles as well as his artistic struggles (as his illness effected him mentally these are closely linked for him) I could write another 2 thousand words but there is some ramblings that anyone can read if they are so inclined. I would list Ren songs to listen to but all of them are great... Go on then: Animal flow (his most recent song is amazing both as a fire rap song and a description of his creative madness) Tale of Jenny and Screech (and violet) (Listen to these 3 in this order and you will be blown away (they were my first Ren songs)) How to be me (great passionate singing) Chalk outliines (goes with how to be me but both are AMAZING) Money Game (part 1and 2 (esp 2)) (great political commentaries) Dominoes (talks about toxic beauty industry etc) And SOO many more...

Just when you said there are no close microphones one could clearly see one microphone approx 5 cm to the left of the corner of his mouth and one mic approx 15 cm to to the left on his collar. The guitar is also plugged in and probably they also recorded the ambient sound of the room at the camera position. Ren and his director/cameraman always use the natural reverberation (and sometimes even background noises) of their locations masterfully, for example in "The story of Jenny and Screech" and "Chalk Outlines")

I love how it’s like a quiet but persistent part of your mind is continuously jabbing your subconscious… telling you it is indeed LIVE and performed in that room. But logic and knowledge of how things are normally done/the industry standard simply won’t let you believe it. Cuz you refer to it quite a bit… but then keeping talking yourself out of it, finding reasons/“proof” of a studio recording But deep down, you knew. In your heart, you knew it was live. 😉 Great reaction. I was afraid that your hyper focus on technique and such would prevent you from “getting it” but you obviously do. I see some reacters that just CANNOT seem to stop with “analysis” long enough to just ENJOY and truly appreciate Ren’s artful performance pieces (it drives me bonkers😆) but it sure seems like you can multitask. I was really looking forward to this... but just one observation: there's a difference between hearing to a song and really listening to it. Granted Ren is a particularly unusual artist in his storytelling, but if I could make one suggestion, if you let it play through once and really listen to it as intended, then go back and do an analysis, you could do it in the same time you did here while allowing for a true reaction as well. Enjoy the content, hope that you do more Ren. If you get to the Tale of Jenny & Screech, just know that the FULL version (13 minutes) is the one to do; it's a story and really needs to be done all at once so that not only you, but also your viewers can mentally carry the storyline through to the incredible end.

One of the small details I picked up on and can’t let go (I don’t know if it’s related or even intentional) is the fact that he mentions the word ‘periphery’. One of the effects of Lymes Disease is something called Peripheral Neuropathy. Maybe it was just word play but it makes me think that this ‘evil’ side is something that stays right on the side lines but is so bold that you see it most when you’re numb and weak. It causes you to be unable to focus on the main issue at hand. Which brings me to my point tying it all together- Peripheral Neuropathy, according to Mayo Clinic, causes “weakness, numbness, and pain from nerve damage, usually in the hands and feet. Symptoms include pain, a pins-and-needles sensation, numbness, and weakness.”
