This was much needed! “Soul to squeeze” ( from the cone heads 90s movie) will always be one of my favorite basslines ever! This was a treat! His signature basses are perfect! A Jazz body with a MM pup, flea has never lost his signature tone we all know him to have! Thanks for this Mark!! Your a beast!!!

He used a signature modulus "FB4" for years and then switched to fender for most of the stadium arcadium album in 2006. A fan had gifted him an extremely rare 1961 fender jazz bass in shell pink. The bass he used on this tour is basically a hybrid of his modulus fb4 with a fender bass. Last I saw it went for around 1800 on fenders website. He now also uses Ampeg amps since John is been back. A fender jazz bass thru an ampeg amp gets my dik hard just thinking about it. It's just so bassy.

If I remember correctly the body and the neck is also jazz type with the neck having graphite reinforcement like and unlike the modulus which is all graphite neck. When he first switched to modulus his request was to have the stingray sound with jazz bass plability. Despite the fender jazz being seen in californication and by the way music videos most were recorded with the modulus but stadium arcadium had the jazz bass mostly and I think the jazz bass is used again in this getaway album.

Love me some flea. Mainly because he isn't crazy tachnical, like ham or wooten, but still amazing. And he does it using the tools I have. Which gives me hope for actually being good one day, after 20 years of sucking. He's a super inspiration. Even though I'm not super stoked on most of their tunes. They have more than a handful of bangers I truly enjoy. I love watching clips of flea and Chad just jamming. To me, that is the heart of the band.

Two months later… And I decided to rewatch this one. I cut out of the previous to look up Fleas gear when you asked. Well… I never came back. 🤦🏼♂️ Until now, and I have a suggestion for another RHCP song that is a good Flea song. “Charlie” I’ve always loved the ghost notes on the verses. That makes the groove to me! There’s a decent Live version at Lollapalooza 2006 that you could check out. 😎

Awesome as usual, mate!! You shoud have a gander at some stuff from Blood sugar sex magik, like: If you have to ask, Funky monks, Naked in the rain. Its simply one of the best albums in history. Really appriciate your style and the detailed reviews, keep'em coming! Now, for the geeky part🤓: Flea is known for using a lot of different types and brand of basses throughout his career. In the first RHCP albums he used a Wal and a MM Stingray, later a Fender JB 1961, then his signature Modulus Flea Basses (Funk Unlimited) with Lane Poor pickups. Nowadays he is using his new Fender JB signature models (both active and passive). In this performance he is playing a Fender Active JB signature which is essentially a jazz bass with an active circuit and a MM style humbucker (I know, i'm a big ass nerd when it comes to basses and gear)

Hey, thanks so much for stopping by, and for the nice words. Appreciate that big time! Thanks SO much for clarifying - I don't think I've heard of the Fender JB stuff...but I'm also not the biggest Fender connoisseur. I figured it was Fender at a glance, but there are so many luthiers and companies these days...
@chivobass Жыл бұрын
Ya I believe the stingray was during the one hot minute era. Then he signed with modulus and used the FB4 for Californication, by the way, and some of stadium arcadium. SA is mainly the fender 61 jazz. I guess he missed his single humbucker so he created the current one with fender.
@LowEndUniversity Жыл бұрын
Makes sense! His tone always has that aggressive, pitting humbucker tone - I think he gravitates toward that no matter what.

@LowEndUniversity ironically one of the most slap happy songs the chili's have where flea literally slaps the entire thing (with the exception of a fill or 2) is the song "tell me baby." You can youtube a video of him doing it with his 61 jazz from AOL sessions in 2006. I would love to hear how that one sounds with his current bass live. Chad's kick verse beat is also grueling and blends so perfect with the slap.

I think he still plays it from time to time. This is his new Fender signature bass. It is loaded with an Aguilar humbucker pickup and an Aguilar preamp; The OBP1 or something lol. I played both of his last two signatures in a store and they are great! But I'm sad he left Gallien-Krueger 🥲
