The lyrical meaning behind "Give It Away" is centered on the philosophy of selflessness and altruistic behavior. The song is titled after its most prevalent lyrical phrase "give it away", which is taken from an experience Kiedis had with his former girlfriend-punk rock singer Nina Hagen - in the early 1980s. Hagen was several years Kiedis' senior and became a role-model during his drug addiction to heroin: "she realized how young and inexperienced I was then, so she was always passing on gems to me, not in a preachy way, just by seizing on opportunities."When Kiedis was looking through her closet he came across a jacket he liked, and commented to Hagen that it was "really cool". Upon expressing this, Hagen immediately told him to keep it. Her reasoning behind this selflessness was due to an attempt to constantly make her life more enjoyable, and explained to Kiedis that "if you have a closet full of clothes and you try to keep them all, your life will get very small. But if you have a full closet and someone sees something they like, if you give it to them, the world is a better place."

People often say that the Chili Peppers mix rock and rap. But funk has always been a big influence on them. You mentioned how they seem so "free." Their second album is called Freaky Style and was produced by George Clinton. By all accounts he didn't just produce the record, but spent a lot of time hanging out and playing music with the band, guiding and inspiring them, and giving them song ideas. George Clinton gave them the funk!

Great points, except this was their 5th album, not first. From Wiki: " first three albums...1984's Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1985's Freaky Styley, 1987's Uplift Mofo Party Plan...virtually no commercial success...fourth album 1989's Mother's Milk...peaked at 52 on Billboard... their fifth album Blood Sugar Sex Magik...Sept 1991..." - that's the one w this song. Mother's Milk had their awesome cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground', which was when I first heard them. Check it out!

You should watch their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Chris Rock inducts them and gives a great induction speech. He tells a story about how he was trying to find a block party that Grand Master Flash and the Furious 5 were performing at in LA somewhere in the early 80's. He ends up at the wrong block party where a pre-fame struggling RHCP is playing. As he tells it they were all performing wearing a single sock (not on one of their feet), their instruments and nothing else. It is a hilarious story. Great reaction :)

This is where RHCP fans come for me, lol. If you like them you'll also like Faith No More. They were frequently compared to each other. They came out roundabout at the same time and are California bands. For Faith No More, start with Epic, From Out Of Nowhere, Falling To Pieces, and Zombie Eaters, your pick. After any of those, check out their cover of The Commodores Easy. It will blow your mind, plus lead singer Mike Patton has an insane range at 6 octaves. If you've seen Will Smith in I Am Legend, you've heard Patton's voice. He voiced the creatures. I think that alone tells you how sick his vocals are. I think he was damn pretty to watch back in the day too.
