Can I ask for some advice in deciding between bass and baritone Uke? Is one better for people with hand problems such as carpal tunnel? I’m a total beginner who prefers low pitched instruments. I don’t plan to play in a group. I’d like to play melodies for my own entertainment. What do you recommend?

Hi, the bass and baritone are very different instruments to play with the baritone generally playing chords although it can be played finger style. I have found players who suffer with carpal tunnel can manage the bass but it does depend on ndividual cases.

I have a really hard time strumming uke chords... I can play three, but I have to pause to watch to re-place my fingers... very frustrating. I can, however, pick out melodies with no problems. Would I be better off trying bass ukulele? On a side note, my heritage on my mother's side is Scotland and Wales; my Great-Grandmother Elizabeth Jones from Wales immigrated to U.S.A. with her parents as a child in the mid-1800's (yeah, I know about 90% of Wales has the surname Jones, and Elizabeth is too common also!). I've seen your husband "pass through" in a couple of your ukulele videos. Does he play also?

Hi, interesting question. It does take time to build muscle memory with your fingers for chords, have you been playing long? Playing bass is completely different, like you say, you do just play one note at a time. Maybe have a look at some of my bass lesons to give you more of an idea. Wonder if these can be converted to baritone uke - with the same strings as baritone - obv a few things will be changed...but...hmmm. Like these except the rubber floppy strings are disappointing - great video and content

Hi, honest answer is I don't know. I've heard of baritone to bass but not the other way around. You would certainly need to alter the nut and saddle. If I find an answer, I'll let you know.
