Hey! Fantastic video! I went to Lowe's to buy the same carpet glue as you. They stopped carrying it in December 2021. I was able to find the same brand of glue (TEC) at Menards, and it's made for marine applications, but it is apparently more "green"...let's hope it works just as well!

Thanks. Good to know cause I need to buy some more lol. Leave me a comment once you try it out
@thomassater34622 жыл бұрын
@@BassBrothersFishingDMV It seems to be working fine so far. It is a tan-colored compound that's about the consistency of soft butter. It's water-based and has just a slight "glue-y" smell to it. It also cleans easily with water, which is great for keeping tools clean, and removing glue from places you don't want it. Like you, I spread it out quickly with a small trowel, then used a notched trowel to finish it. It does start to skin up after about 15 minutes, so you need to be aware of that as you work. When I placed my hatch lid onto the carpet piece, it grabbed pretty well. I turned it carpet-side-up and worked it with a roller, then allowed it to sit for about 3 hours before messing with it. The glue is really setting up nicely, and I was able to move on to stapling and finishing the hatch. All in all, it seems good -- the proof of just how good will be seen when I can get my boat done and on a lake.

Nice job on the boat build and thanks for sharing! How has the varathane spar sealer on your plywood held up? Has the carpet help for you as well? I'm doing the same thing to my boat as we speak and just wanted to get some feedback. Thanks again for all the tips and the time you took on the videos.
@BassBrothersFishingDMV Жыл бұрын
No prob. The spar urethane has held up perfectly. The down side is the glue from Lowes is now discontinued. This glue works well with oil based sealers like Spar urethane. I used spar urethane on the 1436 build I did but switched to another glue. Costs more but went on well. I'm working on a bass tracker now and I'm going to try fiberglass Resin for the first time so I can have more glue options. The carpet still looks great but isn't as plush as when I first installed it.

I spent some time on yacht message boards. Many are full time live aboard sailing people. Quite a few do not advocate gluing carpet to the deck. They like the option of being able to pull up the carpet, inspect the decking underneath and making repairs if there's deterioration of the wood. I'm going to give this a shot. I'm not sure if it will work, but I don't see any harm in trying it out.
@BassBrothersFishingDMV4 жыл бұрын
Wood decking will last several years if sealed properly. There's no real way to repair rotted wood. The best thing to do is to replace your deck if it's rotting. And of course I am talking about jon boat builds use in fresh water. I used a very high end sealant that should last several years.

Love the build and have been following planning to do a similar back deck on my 14’ Lund. Curious if you attached the back deck to the boat at all or if it just fits snug right in the bottom there? Didn’t see anything where you screwed it down or attached it in any way and just want to be sure I didn’t miss it. I’m planning to just do the area behind my back bench seat and have it run flush with the bench. Thanks in advance and love the videos!! Update** I found the video attaching the deck to the boat! Disregard the previous question minus the loving the videos portion! Thanks again for all you do!

I'm curious as to why you did not use marine plywood. I was thinking that when I watched the video where you sealed everything, but I have just realized every staple you install as well as screw has punctured your polyurethane seal and will allow water to enter. I am looking into doing this myself so just curious as to the choice of standard plywood over marine/pressure treated.
@BassBrothersFishingDMV2 жыл бұрын
Pressure treated wood deteriorates aluminum over time. That's why it's best to seal the wood yourself to prevent that. You do want to limit drilling holes into your wood and if you do you can put some silicone or sealant in those holes to keep the wood water tight. The holes staples create are too miniscule to affect the integrity of the wood in my opinion so that doesn't concern me.

What grade carpet do you have? If it's 16 or 20oz, it hides screws well. Of course the bigger the screw, the more visible the screw head can be. Either way there's no guarantee you won't see a screw head or the indentation where the screw is. Rub the carpet after you screw in each screw. That helps.
