Are Basset Hounds stubborn? Are Basset Hounds untrainable? What is the most important thing you must train a Basset Hound to do?
So often I get asked, can you train a Basset Hound? Or, are Basset Hounds stubborn and untrainable? It is true that Basset Hounds have a reputation for being lazy couch potatoes who prefer sleep over work, but Basset Hounds are a highly intelligent breed who can be trained. There are definitely times when Rosie will think a bit before she acts, but when given a command she always executes it. Whether it is Basset Hound Tricks, Basset Hound obedience or Basset Hound scent work, with some patience and persistence you can definitely train a Basset Hound!
The Basset Hound is a short-legged dog breed in the hound family. The Basset Hound is known as an outstanding scent hound, originally bred for rabbit hunting. Basset Hound Central was started to explore all aspects of this amazing breed and help answer many of the common questions surrounding Basset Hounds.
If you think the Basset Hound is an adorable, lovable dog and you want to learn and see more, please subscribe to the channel:

I see my Bassets as politicians, everything is “what can you do for me?” They have the knowledge and ability to do just about anything, just not the desire.

Had 3 of them through the years & 2 Bloodhounds, they are all a trip, but need a lot of early attention and patience, baby wipes, & I used in the 70s & 80s, always had a wash cloth to wipe up the slobber & what ever else, but other then that the best of the best companions!!!

I raised my 6 year old basset from a pup and he is my best friend and I think I am his best friend. The first few years were hard and tricky. But now I take him on hikes, unleashed . He's still stubborn but mostly he knows who's in charge. I use similar tactics with him. Its a multi year long process of both you and your basset learning each other's ways. New sub. Thanks for the content.

I did not know how much so. Seems there’s even more of a bond because you trained her! Like she’s eagerly awaiting your commands so she can collect rewards for her obedience. Look at her posture after you placed her on the sofa! Paws and face say: what next Daddy, what next? Just too sweet.

My old Basset Ben in the 80s woofed on command, shook a paw, sat, dropped toys, and even stayed put. Every other Basset I've had have had extremely selective hearing. He learned everything from a black lab, so I reckon that peer influence matters a great deal for them.

Potty training Rosie took a LOT of time and patience!! Early on it was just a matter of taking her outside every hour or so. Also watching her water intake and making sure she didn't drink too much just before bed. It took well over a year to fully potty train her and I would say it was the most frustrating part of training her.

Rosie did the same thing for about the first two years. I think it stopped because she matured but also because we decided to “ignore” her when we first come in. We let her outside right away, let her relieve herself, and then give her all kinds of love. This might sound mean but it alleviates frustration and it all transpires so quickly that she’s still excited to see us and she’s rewarded with just as much love. As far as when he bites that’s harder. It depends on if he’s playing or doing it aggressively out of fear or protecting his food/toys etc. If he’s just doing it when he’s playing the fix could be as simple as sternly telling him no and giving him his toy to chew instead. After awhile he’ll learn he can’t chew on his people just his toys. Dogs are biters when the play with each other so it’s normal for young dogs to do that to their humans. If it’s happening out of fear/aggression I would find a dog trainer in your area who is experienced with this type of behavior. The sooner the better and it’s money well spent for your peace of mind. I hope this helps! 🙏🏻

They have their own agenda man. When that sniffer is locked on something they turn deaf. I was able to train mine a lot easier when she was older and less excitable.

Not without a good deal of bribery - and even then, only for as long as the Basset deems convenient.

Teaching a basset to “stay” - ie just lie there and don’t move? Not particularly impressive. Teaching a basset to place on their bed and not beg at the dinner table? Now that’s impressive.

i have had many bassets in my life. i have never met a stubborn one. they don't need to learn tricks. it is disrespectful. they are fine just the way they are. maybe you should spend more time training yourself.

I’ll be honest, your reply is a little baffling. Your experience with hounds is unique and all your hounds must have been canine prodigies. Your opinion that training them is disrespectful is very interesting and perhaps a bit faulty. It’s a commonly accepted fact that all hound breeds are stubborn in nature. They were bred for tracking and hunting, both of which require the dog to be persistent and unwavering. Hounds are so notable for their stubbornness that we say people are being hounded when they are stubbornly pursued! I’d agree that they don’t NEED to learn tricks, but it is certainly another commonly held belief that dogs (and humans for that matter) benefit from discipline, exercise, and bonding. Teaching your dog tricks allows all three to take place. I certainly don’t see what harm this causes. In fact, most people with any bit of common sense would see helping another person/creature bring out the best in themselves as being kind and considerate. I’d agree that my dog is just fine the way she is, though! She is such a beautiful hound who loves to spend time working with me. Finally, your last statement was uncalled for, I can see you never trained yourself in manners. As for training myself, I agree that I should continue to do so. As an Army Officer, I train myself daily when I work out at the gym, attend various military schools and training exercises, and educate myself on canine care and behavior. I appreciate your concern for my well-being, however! I hope you continue to train yourself as well. There’s always more we can do to better ourselves but at the end of the day I hope you will learn to accept that people have different opinions than you and that we can all be respectful of each other despite this.
