For apartment life, a white noise machine is super helpful, especially if I have to leave them at home, it’s bedtime, or fireworks are going off. White noise silences the ambient noise that is a constant in apartments. When we’ve had hounds, as soon as they hear the white noise, they know it’s crate time.

That dog is gorgeous. I have 2 basset hounds and have had a total of 6 of them. None of them would run off. My first one couldn’t be dragged off our property and the next 4 would come right back if I said , “see you later”. If they think I am leaving, they would all come running back to me very fast. They are however stubborn, but I like a dog with some individuality and don’t like blind obedience. I like a bit of autonomy in a dog.

Cleo was a neighborhood Basset. She would swim across my neighbors pond to come and play with my Setters and my neighbor s Collie. She would run as fast as she could in broad circles baying and turning corners so tightly she would step on her ears and then roll like a barrel. This was about 2 decades ago and I remember it so well. Once done playing she would swim back across the pond to home. She was beautiful, charming, playful and athletic.

I clicked because I love basset hounds but this was surprisingly informative. You were refreshingly accurate about the basset hound with out using cookie cutter descriptions and demonstrated them well. I have a basset Otis and had an Aussie who we unfortunately had to re home to a family friend because he was stressed around our infant daughter. This video taught me a lot of information that applies to all dog training. I learned more watching this video then I did during 8 $1000 sessions with our aussies dog trainer. If I could go back in time I would have paid anything to come to your area. But my Aussie is living his best life and although it’s hard to admit someone else is a better fit for your dog than you, keeping him in a stressful home would’ve been selfish. Keep up the great work and if I ever need dog training again I’m going to watch all your videos! 😊

I own a basset hound. I go to scenting, rally obedience and agility trials with her: yes, you read that correctly. She has a spunky little personality and comes when she’s called. She’s a super loving dog and very friendly to people of all ages. She’s also good around other dogs. I don’t have to worry about her growling or attacking anyone or anything. Her nose can get her into trouble because she uses it to explore the world. Her housemate is an older Weimaraner - whatever he does, she wants to do too. She’s the second one that I have owned: ❤ the breed.

My 1st Basset was the stereotype - just wanted to chill. My 2nd is completely different. Totally has ADHD! I had to consult with a dog whisperer. She told me that the walks weren't enough - I had to tire out her brain. So we did agility. She loved it and was really good at it. There was a Doberman in our group who hated the high structures. Mine would literally race up, pause at the top. and give him the side eye. My 3rd (dog whisperer also suggested getting her a puppy) is smart as a whip and can problem solve anything, including how to unscrew the lid of the peanut butter jar. They really are the best.

Odie is the Basset-Chad. I'm considering a Basset hound as I've always liked them. I finally have time to train one since I'm working from home. Easy for me to take 10-15 minutes every hour or work 3 hours and have an hour free since I work fast. The pandemic kind of got me out of shape and I'm looking to exercise a bit more in the future. That could be a sweet combo - me getting in shape while keeping a young dog active to learn.

I’ve owned bassets over 30 years. They are for sure the breed for me, but definitely not for everyone. People meet my hounds and say how they want one because “all they do is lay on the porch/couch”. I am quick to tell them that is not true. Yes, they can be very chill, but their brain is basically their nose. 😂 If you want a porch dog, a statue is your best bet. 😂 I love my bassets and can never see myself without them. They love farm life and doing scent work. They’re smart, and if you can train the nose, they’ll do just about anything for you. Mine have been used to visit schools and nursing homes as therapy dogs, and one was task trained as a service dog to alert to sugar changes. Thank you for this video!

We adopted a basset hound. He looked goofy when I first looked at him but I later found out that he is a real hunting dog. Every time he gets outside his instincts kick in. When he spots a wild animal he goes absolutely crazy and makes weird noises. This is not a breed for city living beginners.

Used to care for a friends Bassett. When walking her, I learned to do out and back, not a loop walk. They are one big nose with a dog attached. Out and back walks, they sniff everything going out, but only hit the highlights coming back the same way instead of sniffing absolutely everything in a loop walk. Why walk harder when you can walk smarter.

I have an old Basset girl who is amazing. However, everyone who knows her loves her in small doses. Apparently it is an acquired taste to have a dog that shouts at you constantly. Her cuddles are the best and if you can learn how to effectively hipped food and trash from these lazy ninjas then this breed is amazing! Especially if you have a lot of physical stims and no need for personal space like me. The floppy ears are 10/10, even when they get stinky haha.

We rescued a Bassett found wandering our neighborhood. Freddie (Fredricka) was an extremely gentle dog. Our young daughter used her as a pillow at times. She bonded to me and followed me around. When I'd work under my truck she'd crawl under it give me a lick, then lie down under the truck where she could watch me. She had a "gentle mouth" and enjoyed playing ball. I adopted a Beagle/Dachshund/Treeing Walker mix from a county shelter in 2020. He was nine at the time. I lost him just over a year later to a congenital skin disease. He was a great dog -- learned commands easily, very friendly, walked well on a leash, and loved going into dog-friendly stores. I will say, I was unprepared for his climbing and problem-solving abilities...he moved chairs to climb on counters and tables to get food that I had pushed "out of his reach!" Like the poster above, I miss him every day.

My first basset was more independent - always wanted to go out, hunt, trying to escape to explore the neighborhood, and barked all the time, always made noise.

PVGVs are used in packs in France to go after Jack rabbits. I had one and they are fun. They look similar to bassets with long hair. They have bassets in their bloodline from 500 years ago.

I’ve had Boxers my whole life, but sadly our current home does not allow for the lunatics that they are. So I’m looking at a Bassett. This video was just what I was looking for. Great content thanks so much.

I'v had Labradors, Greyhound and Basset Hounds...... I absolutly love the Bassets!!! Yes they are bred to seek out interesting things and the make noise..... I totally agree to that!!! They also sleep 18 hours a day, in a pile and loves their companions (human, dogs, cats and other animals)! I learned to keep their attention, we ended up with me carrying the leach...... and never had more affectionate dogs ever!!! Absolutly love them!!! ❤❤❤ 46:55

I own a Rescue Basset that was kicked out of 3 homes by the age of 7 months....He is super intelligent and very sweet...Basset's have 550,000 nerve endings in their nose...The only breed that surpasses them is the Bloodhound with 640,000..If their legs were longer they would be used in Police Work....

So appreciate the way that you approach training it's ingenious! Keep up the good work with positive reinforcement and hound education for folks!

Lived in Fla. When I was a teen. We had "Duke." He weighed 85lbs. We had a pool and we would coax him on the diving board. He would howl at us till he couldn't take it anymore and would do the greatest bellyflop you've ever seen. He is waiting on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

Having had nothing but bassets since kindergarten (now 37 years old), if you don’t like basset hounds, YOU are the problem.

I love your methods and I realised I do things similarly to you naturally :) So cute your little Jack Russell checking in there to see you're doing it right with the Bassett ;) bless them all :) - edited because I forgot to say I have a mix that we think has JRT, Bassett and Border Collie in - he herds AND runs away to find things to tell us about noisily ..... we're awaiting his DNA results atm and we love his funny ways...certainly have to be creative in getting him to do what we want haha

If you neglect a "dog-in-distress" for a boutique breed, you are NOT right for the world! The best Basset Hounds are the one's from the pound. They're supposed to have hard-core prison attitudes as well, so if you expect obedience, the joke's on you. They need NO training, they're too cool for ballet, but they do like beer, and sitting around watching old re-runs of Beavis & Butthead. \m/

Bassets are good suburb dogs. They don't take up a lot of space and I ones I knew (and owned) were good family dogs. One drawback - they sniff out skunks!!!😀😀😀

AMEN!! The dog did not buy you! They are a working breed. There are several. Do the research on the breed. Don't choose for looks. Choose a breed that fits your lifestyle. Don't get mad when a working breed is stubborn. They were bred that way so they can do A JOB. If you don't give them a job, they will make up a job and you may not like the job they choose!
