From the Basset Hound Club Of America: basset-bhca.org/about-bassets/
The Basset Hound originated in sixth-century France, a country known for its many strains of hounds. Most strains had a tall version as well as a short-legged size under sixteen inches, which were called basset (bas in French means low-set). Both the Basset Hound and its long-legged cousin, the Bloodhound, are thought to be descendants of the famed St. Hubert hounds.
St. Hubert, a churchman, was the patron saint of the hunt, who set out to develop a new strain of hound, which looked similar to today’s Bloodhound. Many authorities feel the Basset was a result of a mutation in the St. Hubert strain. This genetic deviation produced a short-legged, dwarfed hound, whose slower movement and low-set form was to prove useful for hunters on foot in search of small game.
With his long ears helping to stir up the scent, packs of Bassets were used to drive small prey, such as rabbit and hare, from dense undercover into open terrain where hunters could move in for the kill with spears, nets or clubs. The sport of pack hunting with Basset Hounds continues to this day in France and England.
Gentle and sociable in nature, the Basset Hound is loyal to master and family, devoted to children, and mild-mannered and friendly towards other animals. The Basset Hound Club of America (BHCA), its Member Breeders, and BHCA Recognized Rescue organizations would like to provide prospective Basset Hound owners with the knowledge to make an informed decision regarding the purchase or adoption of this easy-going and comical breed. We have compiled a number of tools and guidelines to make this process a successful one for you and your family.
Please take the time to explore all of these materials to make sure that the Basset Hound is the right dog for you. Once that decision is made, the information provided here will guide you to finding a reputable BHCA Member Breeder or BHCA Recognized Rescue organization to help you in your search for your new family member.

For apartment life, a white noise machine is super helpful, especially if I have to leave them at home, it’s bedtime, or fireworks are going off. White noise silences the ambient noise that is a constant in apartments. When we’ve had hounds, as soon as they hear the white noise, they know it’s crate time.

Cleo was a neighborhood Basset. She would swim across my neighbors pond to come and play with my Setters and my neighbor s Collie. She would run as fast as she could in broad circles baying and turning corners so tightly she would step on her ears and then roll like a barrel. This was about 2 decades ago and I remember it so well. Once done playing she would swim back across the pond to home. She was beautiful, charming, playful and athletic.

I own a basset hound. I go to scenting, rally obedience and agility trials with her: yes, you read that correctly. She has a spunky little personality and comes when she’s called. She’s a super loving dog and very friendly to people of all ages. She’s also good around other dogs. I don’t have to worry about her growling or attacking anyone or anything. Her nose can get her into trouble because she uses it to explore the world. Her housemate is an older Weimaraner - whatever he does, she wants to do too. She’s the second one that I have owned: ❤ the breed.

My 1st Basset was the stereotype - just wanted to chill. My 2nd is completely different. Totally has ADHD! I had to consult with a dog whisperer. She told me that the walks weren't enough - I had to tire out her brain. So we did agility. She loved it and was really good at it. There was a Doberman in our group who hated the high structures. Mine would literally race up, pause at the top. and give him the side eye. My 3rd (dog whisperer also suggested getting her a puppy) is smart as a whip and can problem solve anything, including how to unscrew the lid of the peanut butter jar. They really are the best.

I clicked because I love basset hounds but this was surprisingly informative. You were refreshingly accurate about the basset hound with out using cookie cutter descriptions and demonstrated them well. I have a basset Otis and had an Aussie who we unfortunately had to re home to a family friend because he was stressed around our infant daughter. This video taught me a lot of information that applies to all dog training. I learned more watching this video then I did during 8 $1000 sessions with our aussies dog trainer. If I could go back in time I would have paid anything to come to your area. But my Aussie is living his best life and although it’s hard to admit someone else is a better fit for your dog than you, keeping him in a stressful home would’ve been selfish. Keep up the great work and if I ever need dog training again I’m going to watch all your videos! 😊

I’ve owned bassets over 30 years. They are for sure the breed for me, but definitely not for everyone. People meet my hounds and say how they want one because “all they do is lay on the porch/couch”. I am quick to tell them that is not true. Yes, they can be very chill, but their brain is basically their nose. 😂 If you want a porch dog, a statue is your best bet. 😂 I love my bassets and can never see myself without them. They love farm life and doing scent work. They’re smart, and if you can train the nose, they’ll do just about anything for you. Mine have been used to visit schools and nursing homes as therapy dogs, and one was task trained as a service dog to alert to sugar changes. Thank you for this video!

These dogs can have very unique personalities. My last basset followed me around everywhere I went, constantly wanted attention, and very rarely ever barked. My first basset was more independent - always wanted to go out, hunt, trying to escape to explore the neighborhood, and barked all the time, always made noise.

Odie is the Basset-Chad. I'm considering a Basset hound as I've always liked them. I finally have time to train one since I'm working from home. Easy for me to take 10-15 minutes every hour or work 3 hours and have an hour free since I work fast. The pandemic kind of got me out of shape and I'm looking to exercise a bit more in the future. That could be a sweet combo - me getting in shape while keeping a young dog active to learn.

We rescued a Bassett found wandering our neighborhood. Freddie (Fredricka) was an extremely gentle dog. Our young daughter used her as a pillow at times. She bonded to me and followed me around. When I'd work under my truck she'd crawl under it give me a lick, then lie down under the truck where she could watch me. She had a "gentle mouth" and enjoyed playing ball. Sad day when she had to be put to sleep.

I adopted a Beagle/Dachshund/Treeing Walker mix from a county shelter in 2020. He was nine at the time. I lost him just over a year later to a congenital skin disease. He was a great dog -- learned commands easily, very friendly, walked well on a leash, and loved going into dog-friendly stores. I will say, I was unprepared for his climbing and problem-solving abilities...he moved chairs to climb on counters and tables to get food that I had pushed "out of his reach!" Like the poster above, I miss him every day.

When I got my baby I let him lead me outside and he found my front door himself that way he knew where his home was. Just the best breed! Oh my goodness, I do the Follow the leader bit at work with the dogs we have in daycare & boarding, thanks for this video, it was really great!

I wish I had watched this video before I bought my basset hound, I see so many qualities now that I hadn't seen beforehand. I'm amazed at Oddie's obedience abilities, i'll definitely take in consideration in the further education of my 9-month old basset

I have an old Basset girl who is amazing. However, everyone who knows her loves her in small doses. Apparently it is an acquired taste to have a dog that shouts at you constantly. Her cuddles are the best and if you can learn how to effectively hipped food and trash from these lazy ninjas then this breed is amazing! Especially if you have a lot of physical stims and no need for personal space like me. The floppy ears are 10/10, even when they get stinky haha.

Would love it if you could spotlight a Beauceron at some point! I'm thinking of getting one, but am still collecting more information on the breed. You have a unique perspective on dogs. I love how laid-back and straightforward you are. Using common sense and an approach that works for everyday people with "normal" lives. ❤

We have had five baskets. Interestingly enough one of them was named Odle! Thank you Stonnie for your video. 100% on! For any basset or hound dog - if they are not allowed to use their nose on a regular basis every day, you will certainly experience some behaviors that are not his or her fault. They will get quite rammy. When you walk them don’t keep them 100% on the asphalt or concrete. They need to use their sniffer - let them sniff any greenery possible - other dogs - mud - dirt. They will ❤ you for it.

That dog is gorgeous. I have 2 basset hounds and have had a total of 6 of them. None of them would run off. My first one couldn’t be dragged off our property and the next 4 would come right back if I said , “see you later”. If they think I am leaving, they would all come running back to me very fast. They are however stubborn, but I like a dog with some individuality and don’t like blind obedience. I like a bit of autonomy in a dog.

PVGVs are used in packs in France to go after Jack rabbits. I had one and they are fun. They look similar to bassets with long hair. They have bassets in their bloodline from 500 years ago.

Not a fan of hounds (I love them but they don’t fit my lifestyle) but your approach to the nature of the dog vs my lifestyle is SPOT ON. thanks for all the great videos. I have a tiny (and I mean tiny ) poodle (breeder release) needs much socialization. Some may say Pooh-we’re not interested in your little purse dog. But no. She’s small but she still needs direction just like a 50 lb.standard.

Loveing you videos very informative. At one point I was considering a greater Swiss. Don't see many. I have a 3/4 heeler 1/4 Catahoula. So far great pup very high energy tho. But I live in the sticks so that does help. Again enjoying you videos . Right now my pup is watching your video.
