This week at Retro Bassin' we get a special Mail Call from Bass Fishing Archives. If you don't know, Bass Fishing Archives is the sole source in bass fishing history! It's a great website to find all sorts of information on the bass fishing industry, from B.A.S.S. Tournaments and pro fishing legends to vintage fishing equipment ads and Regional bass fishing techniques. Check 'em out online. In the meantime, I've got a box of old school gold to open, including some Original Rad Lures Chatterbaits and vintage bass fishing books from the 1940s!

Hey Retro! Glad you got the box of goodies! To answer you questions about some of the stuff i sent. The first jig head is a head designed by Gary Klein with Rich Forhan and it was called the Weapon Jig. The deal with this jig was the hook. It was the first short shank wide gap hook with a flat eye ever used in a flipping head. In fact it was Klein who designed the hook. This jig is from the 82/83 timeframe. Second. The jig heads with the wire weedguards. They are the first football heads designed by Larry McCain in 1965. These actual heads are from Bassmaster Record holder Rip Nunnery and his company Bandit Bass Lures and were made in roughly the mid-70s. The books. Grits gresham was an avid bass angler who produced fishing shows on ABC and other networks. He worked a lot with Homer Circle. He was one if the authorities on bass in the late 50s and 60s. Jason Lucas. Lucas this year is finally getting inducted inti the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame. I say finally because if you ask any of the oldtime bass pros like Roland Martin, Larry Nixon, Rick Green, etc they all point to Jason Lucas as the guy who first came out with the scientific approach to bass fishing. The book was first published in 1947 and was reprinted 2 more time lastly in 1962. Dave Hawk. Is a Texan who is the person who arguable invented the Texas rig. He was know as one if the best bass anglers of the day fishing tournaments all over TX, OK, MO. That is the second book he wrote, the first being titled 80 Years on Bass.

@@RetroBassin if you were born in the 80's this channel brings back a lot of memories. TNN Outdoors, Tales of the Gun with David Caradene, Bill Dance, Fishing with Roland Martin, Inn Fisherman with Al Linder. Those Saturday mornings got us all jazzed up about going fishin and Dad new that when the fishing shows were over we would be knocking on his door dying to tell him about the latest lure Bill Dance was promoting that day. I remember one in particular it was the Strike King Spence scout crank bait and dad took us to wal-mart and my brother and i each got one. Oh man did we think we were going to catch a whooper with that thing, i think i casted mine about 20ft up in a tree on about the 4th cast lol my dad just looked at me shook his head and said "Boy i think that one's staying here"

Ok honestly wasn't hunting anything about "retro" fishing tackle. But somehow, someway I went down a rabbit hole and found this channel. What got me hooked was the vid on the okiebug spinnerbait, and I thought for sure I'd went back in time to 1989-90 borrowing my ol mans tackle and boat in high school when I saw that maglight fighting rod paired with a shimano bantam reel, only difference his had the fighting drag switch on the side, which I have still along with his bb1ng lews reels. But without boring everyone and you by rambling on about my addiction of collecting old retro stuff from colman stoves to Mason jars. But I recently sold that boat and cleaned it out and found a hoard of lures from the old dance's ells, tornado spinnerbait, and about 10 bagley's db2's and 3's that I had to bring back to life! This channel has inspired me to really get back into fishing like I was 30 years ago before kids and jobs took over my fun. But I do have something I don't think I've seen you talk about. My dad was a great friend of a man named Van Kennedy, father of a guy that you might know named Steve Kennedy but Van fished a worm that was to me a useless lure but it was the do nuthin worm rigged Carolina style with 1an 1/2 oz bullet weight. Not till I got older did I understand how to fish it and how good of a lure it is. But I did find some in that bottom belly of that ol procraft hooks rusted but those memories were brought back stronger than ever. I just wanted to say after all that I love this channel and love the content and keep it up, it reminds me of way greater times.

Grits Gresham was an Outdoor writer in the same era as Curt Gowdy. They were often on The America Sportsman TV shows. The shows often had one or the other fishing or hunting with sports celebrities and other well known people. I believe they wrote for Sports magazines like Sports Field and Outdoor Life and published books on many outdoor subjects about fishing and hunting of all kinds. Not knowing about them shows you’re just a young Whipper Snapper. They were the original hunting and fishing show that was broadcasted nationwide. Ted Williams is another name to add to the list too. Fishing was popular long before Bass Pro Shop, Cabela’s and the Bass Masters. Take some time and read those books you got and learn the old school way.

Have you ever seen Rubber Worms with Velcro strips on the side of them?? We bought a big box of random fishing stuff at a garage sale in the early 90s and it was full of the fishing gimmick stuff from the 70's and 80's. There was a thing called a fish caller that you put in the water and it had a little light bulb on it that turned on and made some kind of clicking noise "crap" i tried it lol. Big long Creme style flat paddle tail worms with strips of velcro on the sides "also crap" i tried it. Then there was this big white lure that had the shape of a Jitterbug but about 1/3rd bigger without the metal lip, it threaded apart in the middle and had little holes in it. The idea was you would put small piece of an Alka-Seltzer tablet inside it and then cast it out and the foaming action would make Bass hit it. "Crap, but i tried like hell with this one" i think the name may have been something like The Fizzy Popper or something like that. There was also a Popele Pocket Fisherman and we actually used the shit out of that thing as kids because it was easy to carry on a bike lol. But we were kids and had small pockets so that made it tough lol. My brother caught a 12lb channel cat on a Mepps Black Fury using the Pocket Fisherman one hot July day. We were at a rock quarry and we went to swim but we always took the pocket fisherman just for fun. You don't have much power with the pocket fisherman so he wore out quick being only 10 years old so we had to take turns fighting the fish. We packed that channel cat 5 miles all the way home riding 2 on a bike and my Dad about shit when we came running in the house with that fish all dried up and a trail of flies following us all the way home. Boy those were the days my friend those were the days.

Hey fella!! I'm a relatively new "Bassin bud" but I love the videos!! I caught wind that you have a PO box and just sent off what old time soft plastics I had in my tackle. All the lures have been in my kit since I was a little boy, I don't know the origin of 2 of the brands but one is a big name, I also don't know the exact dates on any of em but they definitely range from the 1970's to the 1990's. Hope you catch a dandy on em. Also sent ya a B,O,C hat just so you can prove these baits were sent to ya from the north county 😜 Ps I've caught many many big bass on the green grub I sent ya, tho they're long since discontinued. Cheers

Question, any recommendations to anyone who services older reels? I have a couple older baitcasters from the mid (?) late 80's that I still use. One still works, the other needs some TLC... I'd appreciate a few recommendations to a few good people that service / fix reels, still leaving me with an arm and a leg. Thanks

Great question! First off, I haven’t bought “new” rods and reels for like 10 years, so even that stuff is not vintage. Other than that, if the camera is rolling, it’s all old school all the time!
