I used those Shimano reels back in the day. I'm sure I had both of them at one time. I worked part time at a local tackle shop, and never drew a paycheck. I took my pay in tackle. I had stuff coming out of the ying-yang back then. Alas, I gave a lot of it away (it never hurts to bribe your boat mechanic.), sold some at flea markets, and lost a lot of it when my wife and I split up. The only rod and reel I've still got is a Garcia/Mitchell 300 I bought in the mid-60's sometime, when I was 14 years old or so. My very first pay from working on a local farm. I think I paid about $35.00 for the reel, and a Garcia 7" two piece light action spinning rod. I had to spend 75 cents once to get a new line guide for the reel, and later I think it was $4.95 for a new crank handle, when the original plastic one broke. The rod has had new ceramic guides installed somewhere along the way. No idea what I spent for that. But I sure caught a lot of fish on it. I really enjoy your channel.

In late 1958, a neighborhood friend and I ambled down to the local nearby creek to do a little fishing. We lived in the country, and there was much undeveloped property around our house with a nice, smooth running creek on the outskirts of the woods, adjacent to our home. The depth of our secret fishing hole, that was fueled by the creek, was about 4-foot. Lots of rain could bring that depth to 5 to 6-feet deep. After a good rain fall we headed to this fishing hole, secret to all the neighborhood boys that fished. Bream and catfish usually was washed into the fishing hole from up stream. This creek ran off a lake several miles up stream and the mini-flood would bring these welcomed fish into our hole. A bass here or there could be in the the bream and catfish. Some of my best fishing memories were in these years of my youth, with my Zebco 202. I had this Zebco reel on a no-name brand fishing rod (can't remember) with 8lb line. Live bait was usually what we used, because we had few lures between all of us. This is when I first got introduced to the Lazy Ike. My one hard bait was a Heddon floating River Runt (baby size) in a grey-scale finish. I had used it to catch a few bass out of the hole and my friend Dennis, was keen to this fact. Dennis had this frog pattern banana -shaped bait, called the Lazy Ike and wanted to trade lures. with me. I was a little hesitant because of my lack of knowledge of lures, but soon warmed up to the idea. A new lure in my "pitiful" fishing tackle box was a big deal. After our transaction, we ran down to the fishing hole to try em out. Right off the bat, Dennis caught a nice 2-pound bass, using my old River Runt with a medium retrieve. The Lazy Ike on my rod & reel, was frog patterned and a No. 4 Husky Ike in size. I started talking to myself after my friend caught another bass, no keeper too small, with that Runt. This was my first how-do-you-do fishing a Lazy Ike and I was cranking it all wrong. This was the beginning of a 50-year fishing adventures with the Ike.I did not catch anything that day, but went on fishing it until I got it right, It would become my favorite bait for bass fishing in that same size and finish. After 1970, it started getting difficult to find Lazy Ike baits. By 1970, I had many of these baits in different sizes and finishes. But time to time, while bass fishing in the river from a boat, I would lose an Ike to a obstruction, usually a stick, and the area looked so dad-blame "snaky" I would just cut my line and let the river have my Lazy Ike. I would reach down into my ever growing tackle box and get another frog pattern Ike and start back fishing. Those late afternoon fishing trips, with a cool wind blowing across the river into my face, and using the slow-Ike-retrieve that I started using in my youth. By 1970, I was using an Ambassador 5000 reel with Shakespeare medium rod, and loaded with 12-lb Stren line to cast and fish the #4 Lazy Ike, preferably in frog finish, or black scale finish. I never caught the 15-pounder I always wanted to, but caught many 4-8 lb bass, using that same set-up. My fondest memories was the old fishing hole, my buddy, my Zebco 202 armed with a Lazy Ike fishing in that dirty pond.

Hey Retro. As usual, awesome video! The answer to your question on the Rapala is it was their first response to deep diving cranks in the early 70s. They used the metal lip tech they'd developed for the Magnum Rapala saltwater baits, but the problem was the bass guys didn't take to them well. Not long after they came out with the Fat Rap and that bait hit it big. We'd sell cases of Fat Raps each week in the mid to late 70s from the shop and that lasted through tye 80s. So, i guess you can say the DD90 was the predcessor to the Fat Rap.

A few of those look pretty wild. I don't think I've seen those before. I'm one who's starting to collect antique/vintage lures and I think I have a good start at it so far. I do love those Rebel crankbaits and pick them up all the time in the bargain bin at Walmart. They're not the old ones but they're just like the one's I use to get in the late 80's early 90's. I've caught everything on them from bass, crappie and even flathead catfish. Keep it retro buddy. I love your videos.

My best friend had a Tiny Torpedo in that clear shore minnow color that he lifted from our Ag teacher, circa 1985. We were tresbassing one morning and he was wearing my Skip'n Cisco out 5 to 1 with it. He threw it up into a tree on the pond dam and broke it off. I asked if he was gonna go get it and he said no. I never went up a tree so fast in all my 14 years. I came down and proceeded to become king of the pond that day! Thanx 4 the memories!

Good question, but I bet it is sort of the same reason I will rip open a 40-year-old lure and fish it just for an episode: hopefully these little video become antiques themselves one day.

Dude, what are you going to do with all those lures? You can't fish them all. Whatta' ya got? Like 6000 of them? Go through them all, pick your most prized one, show it and give it away to a fishing viewer. Not me FYI, I already have the best lure in the universe. Jesus!...Moses
