Love that old Yamaha bass. I don't think Yamaha has ever made a bad bass. My first bass was a Yamaha BB300 and every Yamaha I've seen or heard since then has been great.

Yamaha started as a music company in 1887. Ampeg has changed ownership over the years at the drop of a hat. I believe Ampeg might have found a permanent home.

I sure hope so. Yamaha has the best quality control in most every market they're in, be it instruments, motorcycles, etc. Ampeg had suffered in recent years with consistency, so Yamaha can really raise the level on that front.

Yamaha made an awesome DX-7 synthesizer my family has owned for decades. They also make great motors. My dad used a Yamaha outboard on our little family riverboat boat for decades. Neither of these things ever had any operational flaws. They know how to engineer things. Also, the cheap Yamaha student saxophone I played in school bands for a decade was a totally solid instrument. Kind of amazing what a spectrum of good things they make.

Thanks for the honest review, as always. These really do sound quite good. I was (and still am) curious about these amps specifically because Yamaha is now behind them. I think the old Yamaha PB-1 is one of the best sounding and best designed bass preamps out there. It stands the test of time and I don't think any stand-alone preamp can beat it. That said, I will always take my Acoustic 370 over anything else... but that head alone does weight 4 lbs more than the entire RB-115 combo! Prost, Gregor und team! Prost, Ampeg/Yamaha!

Hi Moses, I recently played my Yamaha BB1000s through a 50 watt RB-110 at GC and it was a wonderful match... it sounded better to me in person than the 115 in this video. By "better" I mean that it was such a natural tone while I felt that the Fender Rumble colored the sound quite a bit. I had thought it would be the other way around, so I was surprised. I liked it much more than the 100 watt Fender Rumble, Boss Katana, Acoustic B100C, and even my own MarkBass CMD JB Players School combo. They didn't have the RB-115 at the store but I was so impressed with the 50 watt RB-110 that I ordered this 200 watt RB-115. I'm excited for it to arrive! :)

Lars + Rickenbacker + Ampeg Rocket 115 = NICE I own this sick little beast. It took a while to dial it in. But NOW its a WMD that I endorse to proliferate and detonate. A WEAPON of MASS DISTORTION But "Toto we are not in Kansas any more". Its subtly but significantly modified. 3 Neodmyum backing magnet slugs 15-20% more polly fill stuffing. Modified & extended ports infinitely variable individually for length. Result? WAY better dynamic response to fingers @ the frets. Fatter bottom end. That is now tunable to your taste and even smoother & more extended response. The Eminence 15 is now wide awake and ready to devour. Also use the FX loop for your pedals. It just sounds WAY better. This mod is NOT for the faint of heart. I've been modding building and designing loudspeakers as a hobby for 4 decades. Get it wrong & it will sound like $#!t. I got it RIGHT. Also the 115 LOVES pedals but they have to complement its personality. Me? I run T3 tuner to Boss/JHS angry driver to MXR bass fuzz deluxe to Ibanez BB9 to custom jfet buffer to MXR 10 band EQ. Powered by a Cioks DC5. The last 2 are imho ESSENTIAL! Without a decent clean pedal power unit you will NEVER know the full sonic potential of ANY pedal perod! Plenty of good ones. Just don't buy a Mooer macro power s8. It's a crappy little daisy chain in a box. HUMMMmmm..hiss and makes your pedals sound like a$$. Owned it & replaced it with the above. Humm gone hiss reduced and the pedals all sound AWESOME. So what I thought was a fault in the rocket was simply a weak link in my pedal chain. The MXR ten band eq is invaluable. Sure for bass the last 2 bands are near useless without a tweeter for all those dirty little slappers. Because it runs 18v & has gain & volume with headroom & 24 dB of + & - sweep on each band. Not only can you tone shape really, REALLY well but you can have good control over the CRAZY gain when stacking fuzz distortion & boost. The Greco Rock spirit 3/4 bass w two gold plated humbuckers running through this essential extension of that instrument has only one weak link left..... ME

I’ve had a fairly mixed experience with Ampeg amps. Great ones that I wish I still had, and some that certainly didn’t live up to the reputation of the brand. To me these look and sound like some of the best working musician’s bass combo amps to come to market in quite a long time. With respect to both sound and portability, I think that the Fender Rumble has a true challenger, and you can’t go wrong either way. Ampeg, to me, shines when the bass is played finger-style. You really do get that classic “Wall of Sound” that bassists love.

To stacked pedal distortion ARMAGEDDON mayhem & anywhere in between. But it sounds great @ lower practice levels for me as well. As with ANY bass rig with grunt It's gonna start rattling the $#!t out of anything not tied down or resonant when cranked in your playing space. That was the limit my ears & room could take.

A lot of ppl use kick mics for recording bass tho be aware that those usually jave huge scoops. Otherwise RE20s don’t have proximity effect (bass increase when close to source). Pretty any mic with decently extended lows will work just be careful not to mic to close if the do have proximity effect

I love the sound of this amp! It's so nice and warm, very ampeg-y indeed! Awesome drive section, very tube-like! Also, as I have seen in another review, the EQ is very musical, although I prefer 4 band EQs. I currently play a GK MB 210, and I also love it for its flexible, clean, tight and loud sound and its very musical 4 band EQ. But it can't do vintage sounds very well. I wish I could have both amps in one. The Fender Rhumbles are exactly that - on paper. But in reality, there's something I don't like about them. Somehow, they're "nicht Fisch und nicht Fleisch", as we say in Germany for a bad compromise... So maybe I should just get a nice pedal to put in front of my amp and be happy.

New stuff is light because of the "switching power supplies" that are used now. Half the weight of my Hartke HA3500 is the huge coil brick power supply that's in the middle of the head. It's a mechanical power supply, so to speak. Thing is, they don't break, ever. I have had bad luck with switching power supplies in computers and servers. The new stuff is not built to last. That's the price you pay for a super light amplifier.

I’ve been playing my Markbass rig for twelve years. It has played over three thousand gigs. Still going strong. As is my 1975 Bassman 50 rig. Both get used quite a lot. But when running from gig to gig (before COVID of course), the Markbass rig was a very thankful easy load in and load out.
@gorillafunk7252 жыл бұрын
That may have been true a few years ago. But Yamaha like Roland/ Boss has built its reputation on reliability. My only concern is because most stuff now is Surface Mount Tech its not as easy to repair as good old class A/B discrete electronics. IF anything does go south. For a lot of "repairs" now like warranty work on that stuff. They dont even bother. They just replace the whole thing or a complete new amp module is fitted.

I notice you didn’t show the controls. Could this be because Yamaha stripped this down from the previous version, the BA 115 V2? I have the latter and would not buy a Rocket. Here’s why. No more Auxiliary Input volume control, no more One Inch Tweeter and switch in and out. Top panel controls instead of Front, so I can’t save space by putting my guitar amp or iPad on top. No cool Purple and Green lights on the front. While these features may not be important to some, they are to me! I just bought a used BA 210v2 for a different location because of the lack of these features on the new Rocket Combos.

Really its horses for courses. Mark Bass make awesome gear. I prefer the Ampeg because I'm a filthy little rock pig. For me that suited my style. A lot of jazz & session players prefer the Mark Bass for its neutrality of tone that for them makes it more versatile with various pedals & effects. No right or wrong. Just have to try before you buy to find out whats right for YOU. Hope that helps.
