I feel like I actually caught on quite quickly to what the video was about: The person is inside their head and the subjective world in which every individual's mind takes. This girl comes into his life and he starts to have feelings toward her, he tries to patch these up, he doesn't want them, but soon, they overwhelm his mind, all the imagery that then pops up is the subsequent chaos which his mind undergoes in light of his feelings. That's my take after watching it once.

For me, this "room" represents his life and his feelings, he can not stand the outside world any more with recent events like wars, etc.. But the cracks in the wall represents his feelings towards a person (Alessia here), the wounds he can feel due to words or a break. That's what i think, anyway, this music and this video clip are a work of art. ( Sorry for my bad english i'm french).

I feel like the video gives the vibe that we're all trying to stay safe as houses within our spheres, trying to ignore the goings on outside (forest fires, nuclear missiles, natural disasters) but that it's always going to seep through in the end, and we see a different side of ourselves when confronted with this (the two Dan's in the reflection of the blood)? Dan Sand coming out of his hands also gave the impression that our time is running out no matter how much we try to hide from what's ultimately going to end up as humanity's doom if nothing is done, our body clocks are running out. My interpretation anyway!

The black liquid that keeps pouring out of the wall is his broken heart that he tries to cover up but can’t. He is going insane in his mind and at the end when he starts covering the window with the black liquid his him putting up walls so that he might never get hurt again

I think the video represents a fear of vulnerability, of letting emotions spill over and having them visible to everyone peering in. His world is falling apart and the everyone is watching, especially people close to him, and its terrifying. Everyone outside the windows is also so much larger than his little room, which adds to the feeling of powerlessness. He doesn't want to admit that things are wrong, not even to himself. He won't accept the troubles without or within. He's trying to patch up his holes to stop them from showing and paints up the windows to his soul. The only time he quietly lets his feelings out is when he's alone, letting the sand spill from his hands without any attempt to stop it (possibly eluding to s-lf h-rm, but not necessarily physical).

THE LYRICS YOURE LOOKING FOR ‼️ [Verse 1: Dan Smith] I am bound to you with a tie that we cannot break With a night that we can't replace I'm lost but found with you in a bed that we'll never make It's a feeling we always chase [Pre-Chorus: Dan Smith] I could write a book about the things that you said to me on the pillow And the way you think and how you make me feel You can fill my mind and move my body with the fiction, fantasies Just call this what it is, we don't pretend it's real [Chorus: Dan Smith] So don't make promises to me that you're gonna break We only ever wanted one thing from this Don't paint wonderful lies on me that wash away We only ever wanted one thing from this Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? [Post-Chorus: Dan Smith] Mmm, in another time And in another place Verse 2: Alessia Cara] I hate that you know You can make me feel so small Can't stop myself from falling back into you We get so close then you pull yourself away Maybe we just need a saving Come save me [Pre-Chorus: Alessia Cara] I could write a book about the things that you said to me on the pillow And the way you think and how you make me feel You can fill my mind and move my body with the fiction, fantasies Just call this what it is, we don't pretend it's real [Chorus: Dan Smith & Alessia Cara] So don't make promises to me that you're gonna break We only ever wanted one thing from this Don't paint wonderful lies on me that wash away We only ever wanted one thing from this Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? [Bridge: Dan Smith & Alessia Cara] It felt like something special but it never felt like love Wonder what we could be living in another life Catch us in the mirror and it looks a lot like love Then you stop me talking as you kiss me from above [Chorus: Dan Smith & Alessia Cara] So don't make promises to me that you're gonna break We only ever wanted one thing from this Don't paint wonderful lies on me that wash away We only ever wanted one thing from this Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? This may be my favorite video now. Here's some interpretations that may be entirely "wrong", but as a person that works with conceptual photography, I know that no interpretation is wrong. In fact, every thought and possibility is right. It's obvious here that these two people were in a relationship, and it didn't work out, possibly for a variety of reasons. He is upset about it, sitting there, wishing she could see what it has done to him, and how it makes him feel. Every person we meet becomes a part of us. She was a part of him. He can see and feel bits and pieces of what he has become from her, falling away. He can't stop thinking about her, his feelings are pouring in through the walls. However, this black ink may symbolize feelings for a new person. He doesn't want them. Either he is stuck on her, or simply wants to be on his own. In the end, he uses the new relationship to cover up the feeling that she is watching him. Maybe it is that new relationship that will fix him. He takes a chance, and lets them in, uses them to cover up the windows, ultimately shutting off that feeling of being watched, and may finally be able to move on. The ink could also represent how he feels about her and their relationship. The tears, the pain, the heartbreak, we try to stop feeling these emotions, we try to cover it up, maybe even attempt to ignore it. It almost never works: He gives up, succumbing to the dark wave of heartbreak. We can see him distraught, in a panic like state, with the emotions staining him, and the sheets of the bed. This is the realization point. Where you finally become aware of all that has ended, allowing yourself to feel. It is a horrible yet necessary act. He recovers, and takes his emotions and acceptance to heal, covering up the constant thought of her, and moves on. The ink may stain, but it is now a part of you. Your experiences make you who you are. Another scenario may be that he has taken those emotions (the black ink) and in a panic decides to black out the existence of her, and in the future, denying that they were ever together, and possibly denying he even knew her. She stays on the outside, never knowing anything about him anymore. All she has are memories of what they used to be, suddenly cut off by a relationship ending, and denial. The covering of the windows could ALSO mean that he decides to hide how he feels on the inside (the room that he is in) and stays in his mind, obsessing over what could have been, which is what the whole song is about. Logically this would be the most accurate to the song, hence his lyrics "In another place, what could we have been." Additional interpretations: We see Woody, Kyle, and Will all peeking in. These are his friends, checking in on him, trying to distract him from her, trying to cheer him up. When Kyle sings along it may represent empathy, maybe he knows how Dan feels. They don't know for sure what's happening on the inside. They just want to make sure he is okay. 2:50 Woody is banging on the window, "Dan get out of there! Get back to reality!" We all get to a point where we are so messed up from a heartbreak, a tragedy, a mental illness, that we stop helping ourselves. We get to a certain point where we begin to feel content in our own sadness. We put down our tools and give up, too tired to fight. Sometimes it's not even about giving up, but you begin to feel as if there is no way out, and start to be completely fine with ignoring reality, and living inside your own mind. Content, we feel. Not happy, but okay with living inside a deep dark hole of despair.
@birddeg41025 жыл бұрын
The thing with music like this there's millions of ways to interpret it. And your way if you wanted to would be a way that many of people would accept. Ultimately the tone of it all is escapism and that there was a feeling that was there but the main person is torn cause of it, which is what bastille/alessia are portraying correctly.
@alihossam65315 жыл бұрын
Also at 1:33 the door keeps opening and closing which may be a sign that he is unsure whether to give a chance and try again with her and at 1:40 the person thrown into water maybe a symbol for bad blood video which means he has the same vibes of bad feelings and heartbreak as before and don’t want to repeat that and that’s why he isn’t sure about giving it another chance with her
@alihossam65315 жыл бұрын
And also maybe as you said she is still watching him and keeping up with his news but from a distance and wonder what’s wrong with him and don’t know how his heart is broken without her so he is not sure whether to tell her about his feelings and let her into his life again or try with the new person that has entered his life not because he is afraid of being heartbroken by her again also from being heartbroken by that new person as well or maybe that new person just gave him memories of his last heartbreak and made him worry so he is stuck not knowing what to do...stay safe alone or try with someone new or try again with the same person

"Another Place" [Bastille:] I am bound to you with a tie that we cannot break With a night that we can't replace I'm lost but found with you in a bed that we'll never make It's a feeling we always chase I could write a book about the things that you said to me on the pillow And the way you think and how you make me feel You can fill my mind and move my body with the fiction, fantasies Just call this what it is, we don't pretend it's real So don't make promises to me that you're gonna break We only ever wanted one thing from this Don't paint wonderful lies on me that wash away We only ever wanted one thing from this Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? Mmm, in another time And in another place [Alessia Cara:] I hate that you know that you could make me feel so small Can't stop myself from falling back into you We get so close and you pull yourself away Maybe we just needed saving, come save me I could write a book about the things that you said to me on the pillow And the way you think and how you make me feel You can fill my mind and move my body with the fiction, fantasies Just call this what it is, we don't pretend it's real [Both:] So don't make promises to me that you're gonna break We only ever wanted one thing from this Don't paint wonderful lies on me that wash away We only ever wanted one thing from this Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? [Alessia Cara:] It felt like something special but it never felt like love [Bastille:] Wonder what we could be living in another life [Alessia Cara:] Catch us in the mirror and it looks a lot like love [Bastille:] Then you stop me talking as you kiss me from above [Both:] So don't make promises to me that you're gonna break We only ever wanted one thing from this Don't paint wonderful lies on me that wash away We only ever wanted one thing from this Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? Oh, in another place In another time, what could we have been? [Alessia Cara:] Oh [Bastille:] Yeah, yeah [Alessia Cara:] In another time [Bastille:] And in another place

The other place where Dan wishes to live with his one night stand partner, mentioned in the lyrics, becomes - more universally speaking - his safety bubble, one where he hides from all the bad things happening in the world. The fact that this bubble is artificial can be first detected by the surreal placement of the furniture in the room which makes us question its legitimacy. Also, in one of the first shots, we see an eclipse taking place outside the window, which is another symbol for escapism. While Dan is trying to detach himself from reality, Alessia, Woody, Kyle and Will are bursting into his bubble - acting in an almost prophetic way: shaking him, trying to wake him up with the truth and making him face what he’s avoiding (personal, political and environmental catastrophes). He nevertheless attempts at savaging this bubble he created, to the point where he puts a band-aid on the crack on the wall (“do it with the plaster”, anyone?), paints the windows black (“don’t paint wonderful lies on me that wash away”); but ultimately is bombarded with reality which filters from every crack. I may be reaching with this one, but does anyone else see the shape of a heart in the crack that Dan tries to mend with duck-tape (min 1:05 and 1:06)? So if we assume the black liquid to be the harsh Truth, we can infer that such Truth seeps in through the heart in the form of Love - which is the basic premise of the song? This video is the definition of the concept behind Doom Days - taking the blue pill, closing the curtain, choosing to escape - but at the same time shows how impossible it is to completely detach oneself from the real world, no matter how terrible it is. I love it.
