BAT BOY Off-B'way '01

"Let Me Walk Among You" and "Three Bedroom House" from the 2001 off-Broadway production of "Bat Boy." In the first number, the title character (a.k.a. Edgar) at last bonds with the community during a revival meeting (Deven May and company). In the second song, mother and daughter (Kaitlin Hopkins and Kerry Butler) make plans for the future that do not include husband/father. Music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe.

I saw this production 3 times. So much fun. Deven and Kaitlin should have had a much much bigger musical theater careers.

I bet that if there is a revival at this time, with some changes it would be a hit. This is the kind of musical that was putting in the wrong age.

A couple things.. It opened right around 9/11, plus Urinetown was offbroadway at the same time, and there was really only room for 1 weird musical at once.. I feel like you could expand this into something amazing.. One of my favorite soundtracks, easily.

I saw this original production without knowing what I was walking into. I was able to get a ticket last minute and was completely dazzled. It felt like the magic Little Shop must have felt when it first opened, there was nothing like it and the cast was magnificently talented. I will never understand why it wasn't a huge success even then. It was obviously brilliant and thrilling.

I have almost the same story - still one of the best musicals I've ever seen. I think having no expectation and seeing a fantastic production helps. The cast was amazing... Deven May should have been a star after this.
