I knew that once you finally had this in your possession, you were going to get it running. You are not “restoring” it to how it would have been the day it was installed, just preserving as much as you can. All the little parts and pieces you have made will let this engine survive for a long time. Without your hard work, this was going to china to be recycled. Thank you and your wife for keeping such an amazing piece of history alive.

I was amazed as well, I did nothing to adjust or try to get it in line, I guess it was just "plug and play" of its time.

@@jonathanw4942 Being "plug and play" of its time, it just goes to show what good engineering actually was. When people didn't have computers thinking for them...or telling them. They actually had to think things out. The not having to do anything during or after re-assembly, shows how quality engineering and workmanship will last, unlike most stuff today. That kinda says something right there. Don't you think, sir?

So happy for you to have this engine running again. When your wife said "so proud of you" in the last episode just caught my heart. Then you realize that this is a family project based on love and care. Also you need to get more of Vic in the video. I know that he doesn't want to be in the spotlight but he is such a character and you don't find many like that anymore.

Equally astounding is the playlist for this getting to this moment includes, building winch boxes for the skid steer, fixing trailers for a truck, reviving a lost in the woods crane, building a saw mill, milling every piece of lumber for the building it's under and the formwork for its foundation, learning brickwork, learning stonework. Building the building it's under. Finding, transporting and restoring the boiler!!! And that's what I can think of just off the top of my head. That list is more than 99.9% could comprehend in a life time, for you just a short 2 years!!!!! And that's amid running a business, life, COVID and every other side project along the way. I'll never have the honour of meeting you, but I consider you a key mentor in my life.

Gorgeous! It is so *right*! Massive torque, silent! My father, born 1902, always talked about these Corliss engines running factories. Too bad he can't see this. Once when I was a kid, we went to the Henry Ford Museum, and we kept hearing hissing noises. Finally, my father turned a valve, and a big engine (forget which one) started running. My mother absolutely freaked!

That's an interesting finding with the unscrewed pipe underneath the insulation at the cylinder. Makes you wonder how that happened. There's no real way to know, but I would suspect that, at some time, someone needed to unscrew the vent pipe from the valve and turned the pipe, unscrewing it. Sure sounds nicer with less steam leaking and the knocking gone. Nice to find that was just a rod adjustment issue. Hopefully that squeak reveals its self soon and you can address it as well. Thanks again for taking the time to do these videos!

I doubt seeing this running will ever get old , Jonathan . It put a smile on my face again today , when I saw you had posted another video on it . The run-out on that 10 foot flywheel is almost nothing , smooth as glass . It's a testament to how good we got at making things . It is also a testament to how long they can last , as well . I'm glad you got it , glad you fixed it , & glad you got to see it running again . That was a tall order , but as always , you got it done . Any little things left to do , I have no doubts that you will get them figured out & fixed . The old girl will look like a million bucks painted up & running . A heck of a feat of American engineering , restored by one heck of an American . Be proud of it , Jon ! I am !

You are amazing! I started watching you around the time you retrieved a 1941 chevy and first started that gray 1950 Dodge or Plymouth business coupe. I like old cars. Then I heard of you having done tractor pulls. Then a crane. Your towing business with building at least some of your wreckers. Then came the steam farm. I don't understand how some want to limit you to one thing when you are so marvelously talented. And I love how your lovely wife supports you. Maintain as you are.

Jonathan you get a thumbs-up buddy for all the hard work you have put into this piece I have followed right along since the beginning and it's nice to see her up and running. You are preserving so much of American history that people just don't understand what that meant to America oh, so many things done with steam. I have learned about more and more About Steam Engines through your channel than anywhere else. I didn't realize how many things they did was steamed until now, my father being born in 1898 probably realized a lot more about the steam run industry in America. Thanks Jonathan thanks for saving our history for more people to see. Maybe one day I can make it down to your neck of the woods to see everything in person. Without you and your Channel and your family's participation a lot would have been lost! As always God bless y'all

One of my earliest memorys, is of a steam roller, when the road out the front of our house was being laid. Must have been later 1950's. (I am 67) I traveled around southern India in 1986/7. Amazing! I initially thought that the knock had to do with timing, possibly a linkage issue. See you have solved the problem. I was just about to send you my packing collecting we use in the marine industry for boat shafting. ( 7 drips per minute) I suspect that the engine was used in the textile or in the wood furniture industry. According to what my step dad told me about this area he grew up in. ~~

Now that's how a Corliss is supposed to sound! Only thing missing is the "clack" of the dash pots. Baby steps right? There is a big Corliss in Rolag MN that they fire up during the Western Minnesota Steam Threshing Reunion (WMSTR). That was the first Corliss I saw run, it was dead silent except the hiss of the steam going through the valve structure, the clack of the dash pots and the sound of the flat belt spinning a big ole generator. It is almost hypnotic watching them run. 16' flywheel, 19,000 lbs. 48" stroke, 24" bore. 480HP spinning an Allis Chalmers 200KW generator. Johnathan, fantastic work getting this old girl up and running again. So happy you didn't just keep it as a lawn ornament.

That looks like so much fun -- fixing leaks, fine tuning. This machine looks as if it is easy to repair and work on once you get the basics. Will you put some oilers on it? Funny that they would fill it with dirt for insulation? I will be interested to see the color scheme. I like the dark green for the frame and rods, think the flywheel would look great in red with yellow or white pin stripes. The brass parts look cool just as they are and a Bates name tag would be fabulous.. I think it would be cool to have a belt on the flywheel running something. Also would love to see some of the original blueprints laminated and put on display somewhere. I agree with another comment -- Kathy deserves some credit as well, she totally supports what you are doing and recognizes the historical significance. Oh and one more thing -- Unit Crane still needs some orange paint! AAAAAA+++++
