Mythlok - The Home of Mythology

In ancient #Tagalog, the Supreme Being known as Bathala Maykapal, commonly known as Bathala, is regarded as the creator and ruler of the universe. This term was also used for lesser beings such as personal spirits, omen birds, comets, and other heavenly bodies. It was after the Spanish missionaries came to the #Philippines that Bathala Maykapal became known as a Christian God. Before the 19th century, the term was never used since it was replaced by the words Panginoon and Diyos.
Bathala is the #creator of everything in the universe. He is said to have appeared during various natural phenomenon such as a flood, a fire, and an earthquake, and he declared his authority over the world. The origin or where Bathala came from is not known or documented.
The worship of Bathala, although common across the various islands and tribes of the #Philippines, is most prominent in the Luzon area and its indigenous tribes.
Bathala is considered to be very humanlike in his appearance as he created human beings in his own image in the various creation stories that exist. Various stories of Bathala across the Philippines describe him as an ageless #god with a flowing white beard but extremely strong and powerful.
Other myths and folkore depict him as a young man at the time of the creation and during his battles with his enemies like Sitan and Ulilangkalulua. Other myths also describe him as a giant of a man who lived alone on earth before creating all living beings.
Across the many islands of the Philippines, Bathala is known by many names. Also known as Abba, this highest-ranking deity was described as “may kapal sa lahat,” or the creator of everything. His origin is unknown but his name suggests Hindu influences. The name Bathala is said to be derived from the Sanskrit word bhattara.
The other names attributed to Bathala include Badala, Badhala, Batchala, Mulayri, Molaiari, Molayare, Nuno, Maykapal, Maygawa, Lumikha, Diwata and Dioata.
Bathala was all powerful and commanded obedience and reverence wherever he went. From his sky-like abode, Kawalhatian, Bathala can oversee humanity. He is pleased to see his people follow his rules and intentions. He is pleased when people do good to him, and he lavishes his love on those who paid him homage by following his moral laws. #Filipinos are said to adopt a loose and passive attitude toward worldly affairs, which is attributed to the country's dependence on him. He is also harsh towards those who are not following his rules. He sends lightning and thunder to punish those who do not follow his teachings.
Revival of ancient and traditional Filipino gods is on full swing in the region with the inhabitants finally shedding years of Spanish influence that stems from the colonisation of the islands by the European aggressor. The youth in particular are choosing to refer to the ancient gods and deities in their original names and adopting traditional worship rather than the Spanish documented ones. Bathala is in the forefront of this silent revolution.

It seams that the name of Bathala Maykapal is really not a specific name. Bathala (from avatara, ancient Sanskrit) evolved to Noble lord which is synonymous with Panginoon/Poon (Tagalog). Maykapal means maker. Mulayari and Molaiari sounds just like a different spelling of mayari(owner), may-yari(creator) or Mula-Yari (source-creation). Nuno may mean origin or ancestor. Maykapal, Maygawa, Lumikha all means maker in Tagalog. Diwata and Diaota means deity in ancient Sanskrit, from devata. Abba is the Visayan name for Bathala Maykapal. The Tagalogs dont use an actual name of Bathala Maykapal (according to Spanish sources). In the Tagalog culture, as an act of respect, they do not address their parents by name even today.

@@Mythlok true, and I'm actually a believer of bathala aswell. And it's quite painful to see how my own people forgot how Christianity was spread throughout Philippines, through conquering, slavering and cruelty. And it's more painful to see how they treat the words of their own people(people who worship bathala) as a mere rumor and false, while they treat the words of their captors and slavers, as the truth, how they forgot that the Spanish had to spread false rumors about our Bathala is the Christian God, just to convert my people. Our names were no longer our own language, it's either western or Spanish(is Spain from the west?), no longer Tagalog. So I ask my brothers and sisters: Have we truly broken free from the bonds of the Spanish?

@@MarkSamurai5 Those are the words of Spanish, and Spanish are known to always make up stories, some are to manipulate our histories and some so that it will eliminate all the thoughts of rebellion. Now, from what the words of those Spaniards, the Christian God, Yahwey, was known to be all that is good and infinite kindness and love, he never or ever will, lie, so, if that's the case, why did he introduce himself to us(Tagalogs), using a different name, and then surround himself with others that also called themselves God's, with some his being his children, meaning the Diwata's, instead of the Angels that he was known to create? Simple, because Bathala and the Christian God are not the same. Now, when Spanish learned of Bathala, they couldn't find faults with him that they can use to make us turn away from him, as Bathala is kind and loving to us, unlike someone like Zeus who raped women, so they just say that the two are exactly the same being because of that likeness to make us turn away from Bathala more willingly. And here's other thing, unlike the Christian God though, Bathala never did the 'The Flood' thing to wipe out humanity because we're are groing too evil to his liking, as unlike those Roman's and other people, we Tagalogs are much more tame and peaceful than the others, infact, the closest pantheon God who did that was Zeus, so, going by how those Spaniards think, Christian God was also Zeus, as they both did 'The Flood' to wash humanity off of Evil. And we all know how Zeus is, but mind you, this is only an example.

@@malyarimakisig194 yes bathala is loving and compassionate, but if you mess with him, he will punish you. The same goes for God. Also, I wouldn't compare both bathala and god to zeus because zeus did not create life.

Bathala came from the Filipino expression Bahala, means Guide, caretaker, provider, Or judge. 'ikaw nang bahala' means everything is in your hand. Untold story said, that Bathala Created by two Gods: Ulirang kaluluwa and Galang kaluluwa, the souls of dark and light that endless fighting, bathala made by this two gods to judge who is the most powerful between them. And Bathala Creates two kinds of world through the request of goddess Likas, the goddess of beauty. And that is: Mundo and Daigdig.

Bathala/Noble-God, is the Austronesian equivalents to Ba'al/Zeus, The God of thunder, rain, and the king of the gods, definitely not equivalent to Yahweh, The God of the Jews, Muslims, and Christians, note that Bathala does not speak against worshipping other gods, just as Yahweh does. Bathala has pantheon of gods, with him, unlike Yahweh, the tribal jewish deity, which muslims, and christians worship. Bathala is more equivalents to Zeus, if you note the oral teachings, that Bathala sends his lightning against the transgressors of his moral laws, more similar to the Aryan god, Zeus. The Pagan Gentile world worshipped the same gods, before Yahwism/Judaism. Yahweh isn't equivalent to any of those gods.

Bathalang Maykapal is also called Abba, which Jesus used to call Father God. Although we have lots of dieties in the Philippines, we dont actually idolize them because ee only have one God and thats the Creator....in ifugao we dont pray for the "bulul", those statues are used to guard our crops and fight bad spirits....my co-ifugaos told me they dont idolize them.... somehow when spain came, everything seems to be different and we suddenly have lots of goddess and gods where in fact we call our creator "Abba"....it amaze me how we somehow call God Father the same way as Jesus call Father God.

Love God first, do not idolize these demons. Revelation 14:9-11 9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”
