While I’ve had some success with the Sniffies app, a lot of guys get ticked off if you’re not available when they are whether it’s to meet in person or to live play on the app. They end up deleting the chat . In a bathhouse successs or rejection is more immediate since you’re already there together.so if I have to choose I guess I’m voting for the bathhouse😁

Awesome breakdown. For me, in an open relationship where we do not bring people home it's simple - bathhouses give people who cannot host a place to go or meet others who cannot host. It's not always a hunt that starts there, but when you meet someone there you know you will/may have other options.

Bathhouses are more spontaneous than apps. You can see exactly what you are getting, if you see something to chase after. A lot of times the person on an app doesn’t look anything like their pictures.

When I visit Toronto from Rochester, NY, I prefer to go to Steamworks but Spa Excess was good the one time I went. I don't really feel safe going to people's houses in the GTA and bath houses in TO are still relevant. NYC has one but it's now advised to visit.

Too many flakes on apps, hard to arrange a time, also a time commitment with the back and forth (and then they don’t show up), also get people who show up looking 10 years older than they say they are and then their pic (old guys can be hot too!), and sometimes the ‘magic’ just isn’t there when they show up, and usually the hot guy hits you up while another guy is on his way over 😂. Bathhouses get you in a neutral space, you can relax, have more options (depends who’s there) and more than a few times I have been able to get with a guy who wouldn’t have given me a second look in the outside world.

Apps are okay but I find that there are too many options for guys. A lot of guys just randomly hit up a bunch of different people in their area and hope to match with someone but the problem with that is too many options mean they are probably more likely to flake if they get messages from multiple people.

They literally copy and pasted a message and probably sent it to multiple guys and just waited to see who would reply. So now I assume that's what a lot of guys do. Don't put too much hope into linking with those guys on apps because they will prioritize the men they deem most attractive to them and will flake on the others.

I’m with both. The bathhouse in Perth Australia doesn’t have great parking so it’s better if I catch the nearby train. That’s if I can be bothered going back and forth. Great when I get there. With Grindr and Scruff I’ve had some great sexual experiences.

On apps you also have the issue of someone posting a pic from that one time they looked incredible and haven’t updated since. One guy here in Dallas had the same pic for at least 4 years...and it wasn’t recent to begin with. At least at the baths, you see the other person in real time. And like one other mentioned earlier...I have always been told I looked better in person than my pics...just not comfortable when taking pics. You’ve seen models that in person are almost ugly...but the camera just loves them. The opposite can also be true.

i feel like affordability and convenience are only useful comparisons if we want the same thing form apps and tubs, which i at least dont. apps are time passing, occasionally gounds for dating, and useful for hook ups that can be planned into life so sex can be a passing feature of life. bathhouses are much more the shrine to xochipilli or dionysus - a plavce where we get to take sex as a mystic virtue in its own right. the difference is that between a monk and a church goer - grindr is church, whereas the bathhouses are a spiritual retreat and so just don't fulfil the same role in life, so need comparisons that pick up those incomesurables

Hey Andy... extreme rooms have a sling I believe and are larger. Maybe a little locker also. It's meant to host small groups... oh there's also a barred door (like from a prison cell) you can close so ppl that walk by can look in but can't come in.

Bathhouses, Hands Down. Apps maybe free, but for hooking up and scoring Bathhouses Win. That has been and continues to be my experience. Also Bathhouses are a great place to go after the clubs, especially if you live like the next city down the Interstate to sober up and have fun doing so. The Flex in Cleveland is my place when partying and Akron Steam and Sauna in Akron. There is nothing in Dover,Ohio so you have to either go north on the weekend or head to Pittsburgh or Columbus. Either way the Bathhouses are the way to go.

After the “sauna wars” in Dublin’s gay history 30 years ago in my native Ireland, these were gradually replaced by gay “dating” websites and then gay “dating” (hookup) apps here in the U.K. and elsewhere - and even after Covid, so many gay venues in general started closing down, including the saunas, everywhere - here in the U.K., apps were created, some of which were for the sole purpose of putting gay “cruising” and “dogging” areas on a map of a given area and these seemed to have attracted a certain younger demographic of gay men, despite the risks around personal safety and STI’s etc - we are now seeing a situation post-Covid where gay “hookup” apps are aggressively replacing gay venues in some cities, as gays are socialising in straight venues and straights are going to socialise in gay venues (the few that still remain) - the nonprofit gay venues are in a very precarious position since Covid as well, as many are working from home and many places are giving increased LGBT rights and equality, but I would argue that we gays still need our bars, clubs, saunas, shops and other nonprofit LGBT community venues and these must not be replaced by apps

@@PatrickMarano I really took exception to one disgusting comment made by one owner of the Inn on The Liffey (who had The Dock Sauna attached) where he was just waiting for the right moment to close down the venue and sell up, in which he said that “older men don’t know how to use the internet” that was driving the closure of many gay venues at a certain point in Dublin’s gay venue and community history - this guy also owned the Out on The Liffey bar, near Capel St Bridge, which was originally a barristers and solicitors bar on the Quays in Dublin, which evolved into a lesbians bar and which gained a very rough reputation, where many of the patrons went over to The Front Lounge (now closed and renamed), where he’d also owned a Newsagents very close by - a similar business model happened with the Incognito Sauna and the Horse and Carriage hotel (which fell victim to Dublin’s sauna wars) and another minor sauna called The Vortex did not last long during that time, along with Lynch’s leather bar - the original owner of The George Dublin gay bar on Aungier St, originally the “Jurassic” and the Loft, expanded into the club beside it and he eventually sold it to a chain of straight bars called Capital Bars, who also owned Zanzibar near O’ Connell Bridge, to focus on The Gym Sauna (later closed) and the Boilerhouse sauna (which despite being a concept sauna was showing its age before Covid) - then the present day Pantibar opened on Capel St (owned by Irish drag queen Miss Panti) but the Boilerhouse has become really gross and disgusting - even further back, we had Bartley Dunnes gay bar and we had Exclusive Stallion gay sauna (before my time) after the closing of the Hirchshfield LGBT Centre in Temple Bar along with Flikkers Disco and a number of other (underground) Dublin gay venues - even the Winding Stair LGBT bookshop relocated from the North Quays to the South of the River Liffey to Dawson St - there is a big snobbish thing about having gay venues on Dublin’s Northside of the Liffey as opposed to the Southside and at a certain point, there was a big push to get all the gay venues Northside, even within Dublin City Centre, rather than on the South side, which is an ongoing thing

It's more difficult/almost impossible to exaggerate when you are in a bathhouse...what/who you see is pretty much what you get. As a now more senior gay man, it seems as tho the men at some baths are now past the age of...40? 50? 60? Whereas when I was in my 30s, I rarely saw guys over 40. Finally, while I have been lucky enough to have lived in several states where baths were reasonably close by, I have also lived in states where there weren't any baths in that time zone, they were so far away. So, if I have the choice...baths, and yet I have had reasonable success with apps, I just don't find as many "honest" men on apps.

I'm kinda shy, so bathhouses are a little intimidating; BUT, everybody available is in the house. It doesn't take hours to arrange a meeting only to get stood up. You get to see the person for real, no pics, which may be ancient or just don't look like the person. I'm not all that picky about appearances anyway, but I just hate what a lens does to distort some of us-totally depends on a guy's shape, especially the head. Super handsome people can be totally nonphotogenic. Photogenic people are not necessarily all that handsome in person. The shape of your face, the lighting, the focal length, and the lens diameter will determine how squished your 3D head will mash into a 2D image. I'm bitter, okay! All that said, apps are good for travelers because you don't have to discover how nice or disgusting a bathhouse is, if there even is one, and if you can find it. My experience is that the vast majority of America has no such potentially clean places, rather adult stores and wooded places and some parking areas are all there really is. Frankly I'd rather use an app that has a ratings or testimony feature and plan to meet at someone's home, perhaps getting a shower to boot. [I prefer to travel sleeping in my car, cuz most joints with beds are either overpriced or overskanky. Besides, I tend to drive 18-20 hours per day, not counting my stops to check out attractions along the way, so sometimes I only sleep for a few hours, drive a little more, siesta that peak heat, whatever. X-P I guess my preference varies by situation. Apps are good for wishful thinking any ol' time, though.
