This video goes over how to properly bathe your dog, whether it's a puppy or a dog who already hates getting a bath. This method involves reading your dog and giving them a choice in the matter.
For many years dogs have been forced into having a bath, because the owners didn't know how else to get the dog to stay in the tub. With the techniques I show you in this video, you should be able to have a much less stressful experience, for dog and owner.

I don't have a tub, so I bathe my dude in the shower. He's okay with it, but he insists on frikkin hugging while we're in there. Like full chest-on-chest, head on shoulder kinda hug. Then he goes to sleep. He's a weirdo.

Lol that's so cuteeee I wish my dog would give me hugs while I bathe him xDD

Yeah, he's a hugger. He gets especially huggy if you've had a shitty day. I guess he's never read those articles about how dogs aren't supposed to like hugs. None of my other dogs have been like that, so he's a bit of an oddball, but I'm very glad he is. You can't be in a bad mood when he crawls up into your lap and puts his head on your shoulder like that.

Hi there good approach. I use a similar one. I let the dog climb in, just like you do. However, beforehand I prepare two big empty milk bottles (we use 2 litre tubs that were thrown out from the kitchen). I add the shampoo into the bottle first, than add very warm water to fill the bottle. These two bottles full with sudsy shampooy water are sitting besides the tub BEFORE I even start. I basically add the content of those prepared bottles to the dogs fur. I never turn on the tap, until the dog is completely covered in bubbles. In this way I add the shampoo/water to the dry fur, without ever starting the taps. At the end - I rinse. Thats it. Dogs love it. It removes the needs for much water too. I could not believe how well that method works. My professional groomer taught me that - she uses it with all her dogs.

Yes, I think so too! My grandmother always had dogs as long as I can remember so I know how great they are to be around. I will let you know, but that might be in another 10 years or so haha. Finishing university, finding a job, a proper flat/house, being settled in enough to take properly care of a dog yaddayadda haha

+crimsonKumo haha, being responsible isn't always fun. I waited 6 years once I moved out for Luna. I knew I wanted a BC but waited for the perfect timing. Once I was in the right place, I had to wait another 1.5 to find the perfect breeder. She was well worth the wait! Mookie took 1.5 years and 13 visits with other dogs before we found him (Luna picked him,lol)
@crimsonKumo

Wahh such a long wait! But I can imagine that she was worth it! I'm sure I'll have some extra years to wait, too, because I'd like to have a Japanese Akita haha. But it's good to know that it's quite normal. Aw Luna picked well! :D

+Kepkaaa I have a very active dog and we live in a tiny apartment - it works because we make sure he gets at least 1+ hours of exercise a day. And I don't mean going for mundane walks around the neighborhood. I mean romping in the woods or chasing after a ball exercise - 30 min in the morning and 30+ min at night. Plus he has a dog walker during the day so he doesn't spend 8 hrs straight alone. With these measures we have a happy, healthy pup but in a very small apartment. If you think you can give your dog love, attention, and exercise - I would say don't let your apartment limit you.

Hi! This video is the best I have seen yet!!!! We have a 10 yr old basset hound who is our problem child - re handling of any sort but is VERY evolved and almost human otherwise. At this time we have a mastiff puppy who is 100% animal - very smart but very much a dog. This should help with her first real bath and with almost anything with our basset. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! Also love your caution on using pet crates in the car - good for the best of times but in an accident, it could be less safe. Good LUCK - we wish you all the good karma due from doing a good thing.

What a beautiful dog. I love how midnight black he is! I wanted a brown or black puppy but got a light brindle instead. Now I need another dog....Good job explaining not to force your dog.. I’ll definitely try this today. We used to bathe our puppy every two weeks to once a month. Now that she’s really big (8 month old Collie/Shepherd mix, super smart and more on the German Shepherd size), she wouldn’t want to get in the tub at all...she’s so big now, we couldn’t force her. I realized now that forcing them in is worse, but my husband is so impatient. She wouldn’t take treats too, so the peanut butter is a great idea. We haven’t tried peanut butter. Thank you so much for creating this video. 👍👍👍

One of my recent rescues has clearly been forced to have a bath in the past as he gets very stressed at the prospect. Through lots of counter conditioning he's happy to jump into the bath on his own, but as soon as the shower comes on he's off. One of the issues was he was scared of the slippery surface of the wet bath, so I bought a shower mat for him to stand on. Slowly does it, we'll get there... Good thing my dog is obsessed with peanut butter...

I brought my dog to a local dog groomer, they were so aggressive with him. We started trying to groom him ourselves, but the poor dog screams (literally, he's a husky mix so he's quite vocal) when we brush him, bathe him, touch his nails (with or without intentions to cut them). It's nerve wrecking for everyone, not just the dog. This method seems to be a good idea, I'll be giving it a try this week. He likes the way i smell and there's a dog shampoo at a local pet store that has a similar scent. We will try it out, hopefully this works. I'll probably post another comment about how it works out! I just discovered your channel, I really enjoy it to far. Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more from you! XOXOXO, love from NY!

i know this is an old post, but a way to get the dog used for grooming.... is to make sure that he is used to you touching his nails , hair..etc. so the dog doesnt accompany you touching him with anything negative.... and ofc giving treats along the way is pretty useful

Hugo Rivas I recently found a dog groomer who is willing to work on him and his issues with being groomed, she does a great job for fairly inexpensive! After working with him for not even six months, he doesn't fight her anymore, he just lets it happen! I'm not sure what she did, but she did something right! AND he LOVES to see her. Normally he sees his groomer and screams (literally) and tries to run away!

Maisoon Mostafa we actually tried that method, it didn't do much. See, he would let us play with his toes, I could put my fingers between them, squeeze them, and wiggle them around in weird ways (as though they're being cut) and he doesn't seem phased, until there's a tool in my hand. It could be my phone, the nail clippers, a nail grinder, EVEN A TREAT! And he would act as though it were a gun to his head.

I love the PB all over the wall, I never thought of that. Thanks for reviewing the water part. Most videos only covered the tub. We did well the first time no issue with anything then the weather got nice so we went to deck showers and now she hates the tub. So we are playing tub games, but your water intro is good, that is where I got stuck. I normally have tethered the dog for safety reasons, what are your thoughts on that? I was conflicted as the dog can get out on their own or keep them from getting too jumpy and crazy? Or does it vary per dog or circumstances? Lastly what to do when they are full of soap and refuse to continue? I just never gave this much thought until now and our puppy got super crazy about it.. Any tips for flea baths since the soap has to stay on longer? Tx. Love your videos and so appreciate your training tips. Blessings.
@Krissykris1468
@Krissykris1468 6 жыл бұрын
The key point is to have your dog comfortable so that they don't want to jump out, so the tethering would be unnecessary by doing the training, taking it slow, working at the dogs comfort level. Usually if they're full of soap and they decide, enough is enough. Let them jump out, put a towel on them and let them gain their confidence back and start again (with the soap already on them), remember, what's the big deal with soap on them and out of the tub? Not much, keep the towel so they don't shake it all over, lol. Time. Patience. Understanding. Love :)

Thank u this pit bull puppy suddenly landed on my door step just a few days before Christmas. My 11-year-old daughter has always wanted a dog. I on the other hand know that I would not be able to fully handle it due to my work schedule and her going to school all the time. This is the second dog that has come to my door within the week I’m taking it as a sign that I should probably take one in I don’t know what God is doing. I feel like he’s putting me to the test. As I looked at the bigger picture I realize that this would be great discipline and responsibility for my daughter. It will show her that taken care of another being is not easy but all it takes is perseverance consistency and real genuine love. So this is all a learning curve not just for her but for myself. Throughout the years I thought that I had no more room for any more children let alone pets but maybe this is opening my heart to the idea or teaching us both a valuable maturing lesson. Wish me luck with this bath 🤞🏾🐕🛁💛💛💛💛 wishing everyone a beautiful day💛

This is a great video and you obviously know your dog really well :-) I would say this is perfect for a dog but not so good for a puppy as you should try and make the baths very quick as they get cold easily, which makes it hard as you want to let them have break but they will get very cold. Any tips? Thank you very much though!! :-)

As soon as you get there, walk by the kennel and throw HIGH value food in (nice chunk), walk away so he can't see you, wait 20 seconds, repeat going the other way. Keep repeating, the dog will stop after a bit. What we're showing the dog is with you walking by, it's a good thing, when you leave "no food rains from the sky" - so there is more benefit in you being there than not... get it? Also, try not to push interactions, let the dog stop barking before engaging, keep your body sideways and no eye contact (this will be the easiest for the dog to cope with) - take a look at my understand dog body language Part 1 - I do this training with a black dog through a fence...Good luck! Well done so far!

This is exactly what I was looking for as with the coronavirus I'll have to bathe the doggo myself. Will start conditioning for the home bath before she gets too stinky. Thanks!

This worked like a charm! Thank you for sharing. I didn't have peanut butter, so I used cream cheese. My 8-month-old lab pup has never been so calm and well behaved during a bath. And usually after his baths, he's bouncing off the walls; not this time...within a few minutes after strolling out of the shower, he laid down and took a nap! Unbelievable!!!! Thank you!

Hi! Love your videos! Just wondering what you use now for training treats instead of the Dick van Patten's dog rolls since they changed their formula. I was going to try it for my pup, but I've seen lots of reviews saying that many people's dogs don't like them now.

Thank you for the helpful video and tips! Everyone make sure if you use peanut butter that it is a brand with no artificial sweeteners in it, they can be toxic to dogs.

Honestly anything. I use sticky foods to stick to the wall and make it easier for me to have both my hands to wash the dog. You can try can of cheese (ew but dogs love it), soft dog food works too.

Door open or closed? We just got a rescue and she seems uncomfortable with the bathroom itself. I've been trying to get her in there then praising her heavily when she comes but she doesn't stay long. I just let her run out when she's had enough. She's from out of state and has been scratching and nipping at herself so she probably needs a good clean. I'm thinking of keeping trying to make her comfortable with the room itself 1st, then trying to move to the bath more. Any advice? (I wonder if she wasn't locked in a bathroom a lot as a punishment in previous living situations)

Your plan sounds good! Definitely door open, you always want the dog to feel safe and the need to retreat if they want to.

My dog stresses out in baths but be hot to be careful because he has an allergy to fleas on his back and his skin is irritant and flaky. How can I wash his back if it's in this condition? I would use flea products on him but he's allergic to that too so he finds it hard because he's always scratching his back legs or back causing even more rash.

what temperature water do you use? my former dog (she was the best dog ever..so sweet) hated taking baths but loved water. I think I traumatized her when she was younger and I gave her a bath. I'm now fostering a dog and would like to be able to give her a bath. I'm worried that I'll use the wrong temperature water
