How to bathe a BIG dog who hates water!

Do you have a BIG dog who hates water? I do and it's bath time! In this video I share some tips on how to make bath time for my big baby easier for him and for me! As big as Boss is, he is afraid of rain, thunder, water, sprinklers, wind and...well you get this idea! So bath time has always been interesting. Thank you!! Yes, my Boss completely stole my heart! I miss him terribly but am so glad I got the 3 amazing years with him, Senior dogs - so special and wind up dumped way too often. When you adopt a senior you get quality not quantity!

Follow-up: Success! I finally bathed the dog, in the yard, with 5 buckets of warm water, shampoo and she did not whine, cry or fight. Amazing. Thank you for this inspiration! I am alone, an older lady, with PD and a fairly big dog. Aviva in Akko

I really love this old boy but I have to confess...washing him is not my favorite thing to do! But he is a pretty good sport about it! Not washing is not an option:-)))))

It's tough-- thank you for this view of your method. I have exactly this situation with two Labs, neither of which tolerates a bath. And I'm elderly with no help. It's tough and they now have fleas. It's a daily struggle. Even more difficult in cold weather, coming soon.

You poor thing! My sister used to do use bath towels, a bucket of light soapy water and then a clear water rinse towel. He never smelled! But if your babies have fleas you might want to talk to your vet. Those need to be taken care of.

@@itsnotjustdogs yes, and the vet has recommended against commercial drugs and collars, as toxic and risky for my 15-yr-old dog. And some essential oils pose similar hazards. Will keep trying, thanks.

Older gal here with big dog in the Western Galilee. I lived with a Lab for two years during which time I witnessed her bathing once, with 2 of us holding her down. Now I am alone with a Canaan Dog, roughly the same size, strong and hates water. I got her to enter the shower area with a treat/bribe but when I turn on water, she runs. So thank you for this method. I can get 3 more buckets and tether her to the yard swing maybe that will result in a less dusty dog. I also have to look for that mitt, I've never seen that before, I have a brush, she still sheds much. Eats salmon dog kibble. She tolerates other dogs as long as they are properly introduced. She does not tolerate cats. So not sure what she will do at the dog salon (there is one), she growled at the vet. Aviva in Akko

They make a waterless shampoo for dogs and I love it! If anyone’s wondering you can buy this at Amazon or Walmart. Makes them smell really good too and disinfects them! Harmless!

I do use a waterless occasionally on Boss but he is a big boy and he tends to need a bath every once in a while! I hate that Frito chip smell on the their feet... yuk! And I love the way he shines after a warm bath. Actually I think he secretly likes the way he feels after his bath. After a couple years now he is a lot more tolerant! But in the winter, absolutely use a waterless.

Yup! You can hear the train EVERYWHERE! Big part of the history. At first I thought it would bother but it really doesn't. And thank you, Boss was a beautiful and adorable,(if you can be that big and still be called adorable!) dog. I miss him but now can begin to remember the fun and funny parts.

I have a big dog that probably hasn’t has a bath in about 2 years because he’ been with my dad but were getting him soon should i get all the old hair or as much as i can before i give him a bath and if so which types of soaps do i use for the dog?

Wow! 2 years!!!!! And yes, get as much hair as you can off. That alone might make him feel good. But I like shampoo that is as natural as possible. Oatmeal is soothing. Please let me know how the bath goes! Go slow. He may just love it! I had a stray I found and I was expecting some sort of battle to give him a bath. I soaped him up and he slowly melted into the ground. He LOVED it! :-))))))))))) You just never know.

I have a pit bull/Weimaraner, a German Shepard/rough collie, and a border collie. They are all massive, and bath time is a pain. The pit bull mix, hates water. The German Shepard mix is really nervous all the time, so he doesn’t like baths. And the border collie, runs around while I bathe her. It’s a LOT of work... 💦

Your poor baby! Sounds like he is VERY fearful. Did he have a bad experience? I would recommend a trainer or better yet an animal behaviorist. Research it carefully :-). And let me know how it goes.I would love to hear your progress.

@@itsnotjustdogs My dogs are way bigger than me and my Big brother and my dad don't wanna give them baths because it's a pain. They always Run away if they see a Hose or if we go in the bathroom. Even if we get them in the tub one wont last a second before jumping out and one can only last like 2 minutes before trying to find a way to escape and jump out

@@jelliesinbellies I totally get it! These guys were my sister's babies. She used to use towels to wash Boss. A towels with soap and a couple with just water to wipe it away. That might be an option:-). Warm water helps too. In winter we do it kind of like they give bed baths in the hospital! Bigger ordeal but works in a pinch:-))).

Pools can be scary for dogs. I always worried about that when I had a pool so I had a pool fence. But before I did my Lab/Great Dane fell in. He was a terrible swimmer! Although not afraid, he never really liked water either!

Oh my gosh! I can't imagine squirting Boss with a water hose!!!!! He runs in the house if I water plants just in case he might get splattered! This was created for dogs who HATE water, rain, puddles, just about any kind of water!
