So helpful! I have a new rescue that has many reactive behaviors and my trainer told me to watch these to get some insight into what the dog is trying to tell me!

Hey. What if your dog had like a fluffball tail? How can you tell what happens if they are nervous or something?

Ah yes alpha training I bit my dogs ear like in snow dogs to show him who's boss. I earned his respect that day and his distrust of me ever putting my face next to him.

My favorite border collie video, by far! Your dog looks so intelligent and he is so beautiful!! I have a son he’s collie-lab mix, black and white. His names Apollo and he reminds me of your dog.

my border collie does the same exact thing he is 11 years old now. They are not howling they are speaking.When I put this video on, he was laying on my bed and got up to come and talk with your puppy.This is a classic border collie language which is clearly loving. TY for sharing. i am going to save this darling video, with your beautiful baby

My puppy is licking his lifts very often - he is also teething though. Could he be stressed because of the pain ?

My puppy is actually highly motivated by his puppy kibble, so is it okay to use it for training?

@KrissyKris1468 - Using your process, my dog can now 100% retrieve a new toy named "Red" from a pack of three older unnamed toys. Then this week I repeated the process with a new toy "Banana" and she can 100% retrieve it from the pile of three old toys. But when I put "Banana" and "Red" together with the three other toys, she struggles to get them accurately, probably because she is used to either getting a treat. What's is the process (or steps) for helping her differentiate between the two known named toys, "Red" and "Banana"? And when they are placed together with other unnamed toys? Previous to this, for the last 10 years, she considered "Hedgehog" as the stand in name for all her toys! This training has been so fun and joyful for her!

I love everything about this video except the freeze dried treats. I know freeze dried is very popular, but there is no way to sterilize the meat in those treats and that is why we often times see outbreaks of salmonella or listeria in those products. Better to use a baked treat or a kibble.

I don't understand the reluctance to say dogs are intelligent. They are. They are among the most intelligent of animals.

Well, that didn't work well now, did it? 😅 "Soon you'll have to say it less and less". When exactly is that "soon"? How old are your dogs? What were they bred for? I don't mean to be rude or anything (that's just how frankly Berliners communicate), I just don't think it's the best way to promote reward-based training. Seeing that and hearing "no punishment XYZ" kind of makes me, the viewer, wonder, how much better other training methods work, compared to what I see - which is a shame, because R+ training can be so much more effective than what we see in the video. Anyway, thanks for the recall-willingness in potentially dangerous situations. ❤
@antjea.3105
@antjea.3105 6 ай бұрын
If R+ doesn't work instantly (in the sense that you instantly see "steps of success"), you're doing it wrong. I often read that R+ takes longer than P+, but in my experience that's bs. All you need is the right reward in the right situation (the rest is timing, management and accepting that it's a learning CURVE for both dogs and humans). If you don't know what your dog desires, training will indeed not work well, but using the wrong "reward" is anything but the definition of R+. When the reward isn't rewarding in the eyes of the dog, it can't be considered R+ training. The same is true for P+. If you punish your dog for barking by shouting at it, but all it wanted was attention, then it's R+ training and works wonders, the dog will bark again, the "punishment" didn't work, because it was actually rewarding. Conclusion: Get to know your dog, see the world from his point of view and any type of training will work wonders, beacuse then you will be able to tell the difference between reward and punishment - their use will be more effective. If the dog is less likely to come after you petted him, petting was a punishment in his eyes. If the dog feels unsafe being watched around food, food won't be considered a reward in that situation. Try out all sorts of interactions in various contexts, via trial and error. It's not so much about the method, but about truly knowing and understanding your dog. Don't learn from books alone, learn from your dog.

I'm a trainer but I typically only train obedience. I want to go further into the behavior aspect so your videos are really great. They confirm what I'm seeing communicated. I have trained a successful protection dog and a successful PTSD dog. I am now involved in rescue and I want to do everything I can to help the dogs. So much of that required reading the body language and then determining the best resolution. Thank you so much for your videos!
