Teach Your Dog To Know Each Of Their Toys By Name

Teaching your dog to differentiate between toys can be fun and useful. You can use this technique to teach your dog to clean up their toys, grab a beer from the fridge, pick up socks lying around ect. All training used is Progressive Reinforcement - no physical or psychological intimidation is used.

I have a border collie that knows 17 different toys and I never attempted to train her, I just called them what they were when playing with her and she figures it out in a day every time. Brilliant dog. When we play and she starts getting super excited I'll ask her, "do you got the rabies?" and she stops and looks at me as if I've lost my mind. It's hillarious!

You can definitely start up clicker training at anytime, no matter the age or breed. The clicker just clears everything up because it's such as distinctive noise that the dog KNOWS "yes, that's what I was suppose to do", it takes out the guessing for the dog.

Our family dog recognizes all toys by name by listening to our family conversation and learns from it. No training needed. We only worry about him knowing too much about us.

OMG, it works! I spent an evening (on and off to make sure she didn't get tired) on this trick and I'm seeing a lot of progress. She picks out the right toy among three toys most of the time. She needs a little help in the beginning of every session, but she gets it after a few tries.

Excellent instruction! I got my Loki up to 7 different toys. Kong, Frisbee, Rope, Hotdog, Tennis Ball, Rubber Ball, and Tug. Not many plush toys because they don't last very long. I added something, I used a milk crate, so every time he came with the toy I'd hold the crate so he would by default drop it into the crate, Thus he learned to fetch a toy and put it away at the same time! Now when we start a session, one of his behavior presentations, is to put away his toys!

Our border collie is 16 weeks old and he knows the name of several toys. Thinking about it, he's known it for a few weeks now and I'm stunned to see how smart he actually is. We have hardly trained him at all for half of the stuff he knows and are able to do, we have just shown him a couple of times 😁 he just learns so easily by paying attention and listening to us. And he'd probably learn brain surgery for a nice treat since he's a sucker for anything eatable 😁 Pardon my english, not my first language 😊

@Theinvisibleteenager You can still teach tricks/obedience commands without a clicker, just use the word "YES" in place of the clicker. Instead of standing above the dog you lure your dog under a coffee table that is high enough so the dog can fit, same concept.

I haven't read the book so I can't say if it's similar in the chaining or not, but you will see many trainers use their imagination to create a trick for their dog to perform. Many tricks have many different steps to learn them :)

I taught my dog to do this by playing fetch with her toys and calling out "Bring [toy name]!" whenever she's about to turn and head back to me. The first one was tricky, but now she seems to pick up new names easily. If I didn't just throw the toy and it's just lying around somewhere, she'll go off looking for it until she finds it. I turned it into a game of hide and seek too, so she's really good at finding her stuff when asked. It's actually sort of amazing and really funny watching her scour the apartment for her toy. She always seems to get hungry in the middle of a search, almost like her brain is running extra hard! Mine is named Luna too :) A fluffy little eskie haha

It sounds like you need BETTER food rewards so it's better then running off and playing with a toy. If you have an awesome treat, your dog won't even think of running off. I actually don't even know how many toys she knows the name of, I would say 15-20 that are very reliable (regular toys) then another 10 or so that aren't too familiar with. I can't fit more then that many toys in her toy-box! lol

@KrissyKris1468 - Using your process, my dog can now 100% retrieve a new toy named "Red" from a pack of three older unnamed toys. Then this week I repeated the process with a new toy "Banana" and she can 100% retrieve it from the pile of three old toys. But when I put "Banana" and "Red" together with the three other toys, she struggles to get them accurately, probably because she is used to either getting a treat. What's is the process (or steps) for helping her differentiate between the two known named toys, "Red" and "Banana"? And when they are placed together with other unnamed toys? Previous to this, for the last 10 years, she considered "Hedgehog" as the stand in name for all her toys! This training has been so fun and joyful for her!

Luna is so cute! I have a smooth coated tri-color border collie; I have never trained him using a clicker though. What are your thoughts on starting clicker-method training after a dog has already been used to training without it? He has learned some objects already (without a clicker)...he knows what his bed is, his pull toy ("rings"), and his ball. I'm guessing that the clicker would just make the learning process more efficient? Thoughts?

I'd especially like to see this applied with the same exact toy in 2 different colors. I'm training my border collie as a service animal. Came here to see tips and tricks for multiple bags I'm training her to retrieve with medications, water, and other items. I'll eventually train her to bring me her vest, too. One thing I'd add to this video is to make sure you have a different visual command for each toy. Dogs are overwhelmingly visually oriented. Some breeds won't even respond to different verbal commands.

Oh boy, border collies are some high intelligence / energy dogs. You should start with a dog that needs less exercise, and probably less grooming needs. Of course if your really determined then your first dog being a border collie could work, but if you dont have much time you should get a dog that doesnt need constant social interactions and has an independent side to them. And cats are great too since they are usually more independent than dogs but still very loving. There is something very adorable about a cat that purrs while you pet it. You can find very sweet cats at the shelters / petsmart that are friendly and cute. :)
