This is awesome! It looks like a major workout. We pick up our permit tomorrow so we can start on the bathroom. Couple of questions: 1- how thick does the subfloor under a tiled shower need to be? and 2- What if we can't get the walls perfectly smooth when we tape and mud the new drywall? Would a light texture help cover those mistakes? And how do you put on a little texture?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
if you are tiling the floor of the shower you need 5/8 ply then the following options....Schluter premade pan / or/ wedi premade pan/ or/ another 5/8 ply and then pvc pan and sand mix to form base. Those are the traditional options. I will be doing a texture video soon however most bathrooms should only have corners and factory edges so you will be fine getting it smooth. check out our drywall videos if you need a refresher, cheers!

Hi Jeff. How do you recommend installing a shower mixing valve when retrofitting in a wall with 2x3 studs?
@InsideOfMyOwnMind5 жыл бұрын
Beautiful. Now a question, is there a particular reason for the demarcation in the tiles in the middle back of the shower instead of just continuing the interweave across? I've never seen that toilet cutoff valve before or seen it on the floor. Is it a 90 degree valve? That's one MAD shower head bruh. I want one just to have it even though it doesn't fit in my neighborhood.

Usually love your videos, but in this one, you left quite a few holes in the drywalls where you didn't put any mud (top of the shower, top of the vanity, side of the vanity) and it drove me nuts. Why didn't you bother to close those correctly? Also, why only partially waterproof the shower?
@shaunawilliams65705 жыл бұрын
I thought the same with the greenboard verses the drywall. Id hate to see if there was a water damage or real bad ventilation or condensation that will create mold to grow.

I wanted to change up my bathroom and I removed the hideous tiles that were used as baseboards. When putting down baseboards (like in your video) in a bathroom, should I caulk the top and bottom portion? If so, which caulk would be best?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
Great question. I would suggest regular painters caulk on the top and clear silicone on the bottom if you want to keep water from getting underneath the wood. Cheers!
@yanay18525 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the response! I appreciate your input, and I am so happy that I found this channel! I have been watching your videos for hours on end. I have spent so much money paying people who called themselves pros. I ended up with a nice looking place, only at a quick glance. But when you really take a look: 1) new laminate floors pop very badly in certain areas where I had tile. I asked why it popped so badly, he told me that it will eventually go away. Wrong. Then he decides to take a saw to my new floor to separate the flooring and put glue underneath. You can see where he cut, and it just looks hideous. Then I found out after the fact, by one of his workers, that this was his first time installing laminate flooring. 2) crown molding is separating at every corner/edge. And baseboards are falling apart. They weren’t even painted, I can see the holes with the nails inside. 3) I had them install theater lighting behind the crown molding, and some lights aren’t working in certain spots and the colors of the lights aren’t even the same (daylight, etc.). 4) In my kitchen you can see so many spots that they didn’t seal properly. Right by the stove, the granite countertop didn’t fit properly and there is a HUGE gap from the wall to the countertop. It’s a little over 2”. I can see that he put clear caulking, but it fell right behind the cabinet while some stuck to the granite. They either took advantage of me because I’m a nice person, or because I’m a woman that lives alone. I really wish that I would have watched your videos so I would have known what to look for. This makes me want to learn stuff on my own, so that I can do it without help. I could have saved a lot of money. Now I need to fix what they installed so horribly.

Hey Jeff, Is it possible to install a faucet designed to mount to the wall of a (vintage clawfoot) bathtub, to the wall of the actual bathroom, above a normal bathtub? We have a beautiful Kingston Brass (it was like $450 new) wall-mount faucet, only to realize that they mean "wall mount as in the wall of the tub", but we are determined to make it work as we just really love the piece. The trouble is that the long threaded stem piece that would normally be going through the hole of a tub is just barely too short to accommodate a 1/2" DurRock and eventually a 3/8" thick tile. Is it acceptable to just extend the stem with a 3/4" threaded nipple and a 3/4" PVC or Galvanized coupler? Are there any risks of doing it this way that we aren't aware of? Or are there other ways to outfit a "tub-wall-mount" faucet to become a "bathroom wall mount" faucet that we haven't thought of? Thank you, Karrie and Rob in Key West FL
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, sounds plausible since there is nothing in the valve that needs to be installed in a certain direction to dictate performance. my only concern woulkd be do you have a large enough estucheon cover for the valve to cover the hole needed to use fittings on the supply lines. Just rem,ember to rough it all in and think through the finish so you are not disappointed. Cheers!

Why not waterproof the whole shower?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
no need, The tile is so large that waterproofing over cement in areas that will never see the water is redundant. Cheers!

no different with tile. grout is porous and all that water on the floor goes to the cable at some point. Cheers!

I am surprised to see a floating floor in a bathroom, especially over electric radiant heat! Water + electricity doesn't seem wise. There must be more to this. I know you know what you're doing. I guess I have to wait for the slow version.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
We are going to turn the industry on its head. The heating coil is insulated and grounded on a GFCI circuit so no worries there and the vinyl is water proof. The best part is that vinyl can be installed as a floating floor and finished as a structural element. cheers!
@sblack485 жыл бұрын
So water can't get in between the planks? The tongue and groove provides a seal? I expect you will explain this in the install video. Nice to see a successful channel from Ottawa. I grew up in Manotick. I'm surprised you aren't full time doing flood and tornado repair.

Why did you not take waterproofing all the way ? Also why not finish the tile behind the Mirror ? thats just being lazy

Hi Pedro, all these questions will be answered in the videos to follow. Trust me there are good reasons for each decision made. Cheers!
