This was a comparison done at Bathurst 2004 to demonstrate the advances in technology over the years of road cars versus racing cars, and of new racing cars versus old racing cars.
Cameron McConville is driving the 2004 SS Commodore
Peter Brock is driving the Holden A9X Torana
Mark Skaife is driving the 2004 Holden V8 Supercar

Granted the teams may have toyed with them to make them go a little harder, but they were really no different to the cars that you could walk into a dealership and buy. I used to enjoy watching V8 Supercars but I went to Clipsal once and talked more than a dozen fans over the day and every single one thought they were actually fords and holdens. Then later I watched a fist fight break out over which brand was actually better on track and why. I told one guy that maybe the head and taillights or some hinges were from the factory but nothing else was, he eventually called me a fucking idiot and took a swing at me and I ended up having to talk fast to police to avoid being thrown out. Great teams and drivers, fantastic engineering but the branding is a meaningless and stupid concept and a decent percentage of the fans believing it to various degrees and being encouraged to believe it makes the whole sport becomes such a stupid thing that I can’t watch it any more.

Thank god for the reliability of modern cars, but you still service them the same in your garage at home. They still need the engine oil changed, oil filter, air filter, trans fluid, diff oils, transfer case oil if a 4wd, power steering fluid, brake fluid, brake & rotor changes. Auto trans fluid can be a more involved process these days to change the fluid on but that’s part of the fun. More involved tinkering at home with mates & beers would be changing a timing belt & water pump, or rocker cover gaskets on a V6. You can still buy older cars if you want to spend 200% more of your time working on them because things go wrong with them more frequently. I know I wouldn’t be too keen.

What a pity the networks dumb down the sound....It's always been like that, all we get to hear are the commentators talking shit. I don't mind Crompton, but just give us a brief update every now and then and turn the cars up and let us enjoy the Racing! It's never going to happen, but we could still work out what's going on and we wouldn't have to listen to this constant dribble.....It's the same with all Motorsport.....If only we had a button on the remote to shut them up.

Nothing compares to the A9X...Under race conditions, the 20 odd seconds Skaife gave Brock, he would NOT have caught him...Fastest Bathurst 2004 lap time was about 2:08 & Brocky did a 2:20 on last lap in 1979 on old tyres on the last lap when 6 laps ahead & broke lap record...Such true dominance...Todays' drivers have it so easy...

how much more faster would skaife be if there was no caltex chase ? or how much slower the torana would be if there was the caltex chase ?
@jmilne5751
@jmilne5751 2 ай бұрын
@@chopperking1122 Skaife wouldn't be that much faster...The technology used at the time for Skaife & other drivers pretty much drive themselves...The A9X had NO power steering, no onboard computer, sensors anything like that and yet Brock made it look easy... Take the drivers from the 90's onwards and put them in a car without all the bells and whistles & I guarantee they couldn't drive them anything like Brock, Johnson, Moffat, Grice etc...

Pity that the A9X didn’t have a fresh engine, it would have gone so much closer to winning. The motor was old and a bit worn out. Also a 5 or 6 speed would have made it very competitive.

Nah, even though technically speaking modern cars beat old-school hands-down, I would still prefer to watch the A9X era cars. Sure the modern cars are faster around the track, but that doesn't immediately translate to them being better, it just means they're faster; and when you stack them against other modern, fast, cars, what's the difference? Nothing. In terms of entertainment, thrill of the race, seat of your pants type stuff, nothing much has changed...it's just that modern cars are very clinical, not something you can dream about when you're in the garage tinkering with your pride and joy. Modern ATCC races are not 'for the people' anymore, they're for the corporates.

Looks like they got the release times about right for the last 2 at least. About an 18 second gap which represents the difference between qualifying times in 1979 and 2004 (adding 6 seconds to the 1979 time due to Caltex Chase not existing then)
