I like to imagine that half the goons I beat up in Origins are just dudes violating the curfew to run down to the corner shop for some milk and then all the others who run up to attack me are just fellow husbands on errands who see their friend getting beaten up by a madman in a cloak.

Here from 2020 - your wish is now the reality. Less goons and more stupid people, also less gadgets but you get a cool stick and police will give you a thumbs up for doing it. Only thing missing is an OG name and in the great words of S.L.B. - JUST DO IT!!!! I know I'm breaking the format but FUCK IT with a capital McDonald's M, also more toilet paper crave than you would imagine even though bum guns have always been around in Asia.

I think the reason that Batman doesn't have all his things in Asylum is because he didn't think he'd need to bring them, and the reason he doesn't have them in City is because he got like a starter package, because Alfred only had room for those.

Thing is, though, in Arkham City Alfred warns him about the Grapnel Boost being just a prototype, yet in Arkham Origins Batman has it, and it isn't even mentioned how the hell it was still in prototype phase in Arkham City. This game is far from a bad game, but it has too many plotholes.

2:23 Actually they do. Black Mask's offer was open to anyone (not just the mercenaries that showed up) and Gotham was in the middle of a massive snowstorm. So the blizzard coupled with the the Black Mask/Batman Royal Rumble left the city pretty devoid of non-goon life.

Also just think about this, adding pedestrians to the game would most likely leave you with constant people getting hurt and needing to be saved and there would most likely be some excuse for an escort mission of some sort. Adding pedestrians would have negatively impacted this more than positively.

Firefly is Batman's self destructive nature: Alfred mentions it himself in the intro. Funny you should mention Deathstroke and Deadshot as both were created to be the "anti-Batman" and both kind of fail at it. Deadshot to the point where they've made him suicidal because he's such a loser.

Firefly-Self-destructive tendencies Copperhead-Use of psychological warfare Bane-Pride and self-reliance Shiva-Use of stealth and ninja tactics Killer Croc-Social outcast and feared Deathstroke-Training to the peak of physical perfection Deadshot-Vigilante who kills Every villain represents some aspect of Batman, except for Electrocutioner because he is obviously a throw away joke. Bane was tough until I realized the true purpose of him risking his own life to kill Batman. Batman had already beaten Bane in the past, and Bane needs to kill Batman in order to re-establish his dominance. Are they the most famous/most complex of the Batman villains? No. But they all have a purpose if you just dig hard enough.
@Ralph-yn3gr
@Ralph-yn3gr 5 жыл бұрын
I would argue even Electrocutioner sort of works. Both are normal guys who relies on gadgets to make up for some deficiency and gain power beyond their physical abilities. In Electrocutioner's case it's intelligence and in Batman's it's a lack of superpowers while trying to go up against every criminal ever, some of whom have superpowers (or steroids that have taken steroids).

The reason he has many gadgets from the other games is because he has a rotating arsenal. He can't bring the entire batcave in his belt, so he goes back the cave to get gadgets as he needs them. Keep in mind that while he is a super hero, he has no super powers. That shit is heavy. The reason why there are only goons in the street is explained within the first 20 or so minutes of the game. It is Christmas Eve. Most people are at home with their families. Just to be extra clear, there is a PA going on throughout the entire length of the game saying "Due to increased criminal activity, a mandatory curfew has been put in effect. Stay indoors. Anyone caught violating the curfew will be punished to the maximum extent of the law." That pretty much only leaves the people who are breaking the law anyway. Although you do occasionally rescue normal people being mugged or whatever. Not to mention that the first mission in the game is to stop a riot in Blackgate where the prison is torn apart and many criminals escape in to the streets. Deathstroke and Deadshot have similar names, but are not at all similar in their abilities. Deathstroke is much like Batman in his fighting. He is very physical, using martial arts, swords, a staff, and yes, he does use guns too, but sparingly. Deadshot uses sniper rifles and hand-cannons. He fights from long-range, never getting physical. He is not an adept fighter, so he uses guns exclusively. Yes, half of Gotham City is the same as from Arkham City. Because Arkham City was half of Gotham City. I can't imagine in the span of five years they would bull doze half the city and rebuild it. It is the same city in both games, so it makes a lot of sense that the parts you see in both games look the same. It's also strange that he never mentions how the boss fights are greatly improved from the previous games, despite the smaller-named villains. With all this, makes me wonder if he actually played the game or got second-hand information.

You didn't read past the first line, did you? :( As previously stated, due to the Blackgate prison being pretty well destroyed and the criminals escaping, plus all the other shit going on with terrorists attacking the city (example being Firefly setting fire to the Gotham Bridge and taking hostages), a curfew was put in place. Civilians on the streets would be arrested and punished to the maximum extent of the law. That message is repeated over a PA everywhere in the city for the entire length of the game.

My idea for an Arkham City sequel: It's been three weeks since the events of Arkham City. Gotham is rebuilding, the underworld has been thrown into a power struggle since the Joker's death, and Batman is still torn up about how he couldn't save everyone. Suddenly, Gotham Bank comes under attack by a group of goons led by the Scarecrow. The goons are easily dealt with, but Batman is gassed, going into his regular dream-world. He defeats Scarecrow, and gets back to his job. However, he begins to have visions. The Joker's face is everywhere, vivid hallucinations of him visit him in his sleep, and that laughter, that psychotic laughter, is everywhere... Batman is being haunted by the Joker, and it threatens to drive him insane. This has all been a plot by the Scarecrow to drive the Dark Knight mad, so that he can take control unopposed. Now, with the Scarecrow staging a full-on coup on Gotham, Batman must learn to deal with his internal psychosis and put it aside, to save Gotham, civilians, and, ultimately, himself...

I say Scarecrow just Fear-Bombs the entirety of Gotham. Then we can get those platforming bits like in Arkham Asylum, but in the city itself and not just small sections of the asylum. Also, we wouldn't have to fight just goons anymore; we could get those skeletons back, wolves, giant bat creatures, whatever else can be dug up out of the Halloween barrel. Though, the Joker thing is a good idea. A way of having his presence still hanging over things, but without Joker having to be center villain again.

Bane's obsess over killing Batman has been explained. When he were younger, Bane spent much of his childhood on prison named Peña Dura, There he had nightmares about demonic monsterbat, who he saw as manifestation of his fears. When he escapped, he became fascinated on Gotham, because, like Peña Dura, fear rules Gotham, but in Gotham, Bane saw that fear as the fear of Batman. Bane was also convinced that Batman was the demonic bat which had haunted his dreams since childhood, therefore, Bane believed fate placed Batman on a collision course with him.

The city in this game is twice as large as Arkham City and includes the part of town called north gotham that would eventually become walled off as the Arkham City prison. What bothers me is that this North Gotham turned out to be to the south-east of Central Gotham, the setting of Arkham Knight. Unless the map is fucked up in Arkham games where up isn't north anymore.

I was thinking about why Batman had so many gadgets in this game compared to the others and I think I figured it out. In Arkham City (I think) Alfred asks why he just doesn't get a bigger belt rather than requesting something new every few hours to which Batman replies something along the lines of how it slowed him down or something. In Arkham Origins, Batman seems to be much more padded with his suit and belt so it seems like as time went on, he slimmed down and trimmed some stuff off of his belt.

I was really pissed when I found out that not only is Joker in the game, but he is the main villain! I was so excited about Black Mask being the new big villain, and then WB Montreal had to ruin it by piggybacking on Asylum and City by choosing the same antagonist. Most of the assassins were side missions, the story is only about ten hours long, multiplayer rarely works on ps3, and the final boss fight was extremely anticlimactic. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay was great and I had a killer weekend playing Origins, but overall I was a bit disappointed. I hope that Rocksteady comes out with a new one in 2014.

Its not really thier fault, it is part of the Arkham game so Joker had to be big in this game and the sad fact is that thansk to The Dark Knight people are more interested in Joker rather than Batman.

Andrew Jackson It is certainly possible that WB was required to put the Joker into the game, and I completely understand what you are saying about the Joker. Many people would probably become less interested in Batman if the Joker did not exist, but I am still disappointed that the other assassins didn't have as much to do with the plot in Origins. Even Bane, who was in the last two games, had almost as big a part as Joker, which was disappointing to me. I would like to see some less known villains as primary antagonists. However I did really enjoy the Firefly mission.

I think you will be glad to know that Rocksteady are making a new Batman game however I am not sure about 2014. SPOILERS FROM ARKHAM CITY, unless they bring the Joker back to life it should not have the Joker. I would think that Harley would be playing a small part to get Jokers crazy in. It is likely that Scarecrow will be the main villain.

latpasko The problem with a day knight cycle is that Batman only really fights at night. Plus he does not interact with civilians, so you would need a way to prevent the player from flying down and interacting with civilians. This was the game that made me realize that the Arkham series gameplay is getting stale. You always seem to switch between swooping around the city to get to a place, then walking through the place and getting into brawls and occasionally a stealth section. The environments and gameplay start getting repetitive. Plus all the lock hacking and button mashing to open grates really starts to get annoying.

I enjoyed Origins, though it IS my least favorite of the series. For me, the interactive detective mode and the Joker were big pluses. What I wasn't such a fan of was something that was mentioned in the review, and that's that the game felt like it was trying really hard to be like Christopher Nolan's movies rather than the Arkham games. Bane, Gotham City, even Batman and his relationship with Alfred felt really Nolan-esque. I mean I like those movies, but...I don't want them in the Arkham games
@DominikKensylar

Joker was a plus for you? I can't really understand, seeing that I was pissed that Black Mask, an actual crime lord (for a Batman game, who is someone who usually fights crime) did not have the chance to be the main villain. For me the Joker was so forced especially the "he's something special" part. It was totally unexplained, he was just a freaking terrorist, who has a psychotic disorder and I suspect they really just did that because of Ledger's hailed performance (Maybe if Troy Baker had died before the release I would be more generous there (black comedy, beware)). Explain to me why you thought the character was well done in this game? On another note, I found Bane to be rather a great villain, being portrayed as driven and smart, being the only one who found out Batman's true identity (which I won't spoil here) up until the last fight with him were they felt the need to make him just a big brute with no brain. The only thing I disliked about him was that he was such a potentially great adversary that the game, by using Joker as the main villain, practically degraded him to this point where I thought "He could have been the main villain but he isn't!" And that just felt negative to me. On the matter of him feeling like the Nolansche interpretation of the character: I though Nolan did a very specific Bane of whom I did not really see something in AO's Bane.

The games kept close to the comics as far as Alfred and Bane. Nolan made them a little more... Romanticized (15th century-romance, like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight-type). Also, Nolan kept close to the comics in theme and spirit, using Year One and Long Halloween as inspirations for 1 and 2. Idk about 3. Bane is the smartest of Batman's villains, btw.
@flamemasterelan
@flamemasterelan 9 жыл бұрын
***** Saying that Nolan kept close to the comics in theme and spirit isn't really fair. The Dark Knight is a combination between The Killing Joke and The Long Halloween, but Goyer and Nolan clearly missed the point of both. For starters, if you haven't read The Long Halloween, it's a bit of a crime drama, but it's also a super hero spectacle about the changing of the guard between the old mob and the new gangs of "Freaks." But, more than that, he missed the point of Harvey Dent. In the movie, Harv loses his girlfriend, and gets really pissed off and decides to get revenge, deciding whether he should kill or not by the flip of a coin until he's killed in an accidental fall. But in the books, the tragedy of Harvey Dent isn't that he dies. It isn't that he loses the people he loves, because they're all still there for him. The tragedy is that he becomes exactly what he hated, exactly what he fought against. He becomes a murderer in the end, making him exactly like the men he was trying to put away. He becomes a crime boss for the "new guard," making him exactly like Maroni and Falcone, the men who ruined his life. And he becomes a psychotic who can't live in the real world due to his new obsession with duality and his coin, making him like The Joker, the only man to ever come close to killing him or his family. With The Killing Joke, the ultimate goal is simple: The Joker wants to prove that a single bad day is enough to make any man go insane and become a killer. In the books, he chooses Jim Gordon. But in the movie, this plotline is barely developed, and he picks Harvey Dent in the end. In the books, Jim proves him wrong, and the ending note is that it's Batman and The Joker who are damaged, who are wrong, while normal people would never go so far. But, in the movie, he's proven right, because Harvey becomes a killer in the end. The entire point of The Killing Joke is that The Joker isn't special. He's not better, or smarter or stronger than most people, he's weak. He lost what he cared for, and it drove him insane, it turned him into a killer.
@flamemasterelan
@flamemasterelan 9 жыл бұрын
***** Oh, and The Dark Knight Rises is an utter mess of a movie that tries to combine Knightfall and No Man's Land(two of the longest-running comic arcs that Batman has ever had), along with The Dark Knight Returns. Of course, the normal thing to do would have been to try and adapt Dark Victory, but when they killed off Harvey Dent at the end of TDK, and Christian Bale started yelling about how if they add in Robin, he'll quit, there wasn't much hope of the catharsis that Dark Victory revolves around.

Heh heh, "goon." Oh, but the game does show that a combination of Christmas holiday, a severe snowstorm, and a curfew caused most if not everyone who was "non-goon" to stay out of the streets. Also, Firefly represents "obsession towards a goal." Firefly wants to burn everything, Batman wants to hit goons. It's not AMAZING, but Arkham Origins isn't completely horrible either. Maybe if it was made before Arkham City or instead of Arkham City, it would feel fresh or better. As it is, though, there's just too much familiar ground to warrant buying, at least to me. I'm curious if Yahtzee will review Arkham Knight, though.

Guy On A Chair he actually just mixed many plot points of the comics. Bane father figure for Scandal Savage became father figure for Talia. his character backstory becomes talia back story his british mercenary father becomes Raz al Gul, and Bane in the Pit make the role of the priest in his comic origin, with talia taking his role... Bane is maybe one of the most complex and interesting enemies of batman, and in fact his total antithesis. both incredibly athletic and intelligent, with bane being a bit more strong physically (even without venom steroids) but unfortunately he is a comic book character, this means every two dime writer in need of a brute used him because they could not bother with creating a new guy...

I've often found the the main criticism of Origin is that it's too similar to City, which is fair. The city is the same and they did basically nothing to the combat, stealth or any other mechanics to differentiate them. However... The boss fights are more varied and more interesting, the story is MUCH better told (seriously, raise your hand if you remember what Ra's al Ghul was even doing in City), and the Christmas theme made this city look very pretty. I'm inclined to believe that, had the two games released at the exact same time and we didn't know which one Rocksteady developed, Origins would be regarded as the better game.

I wasn't an enormous fan of the game, but really, Yahtzee's basic "trolling for hits" styie just seems more and more desperate. It's definitely a game for comic book nerds, even more so than City, and someone (like me) who isn't into the comics as much is likely to go "wha?" Also, was the Wii U version really THAT much better than the other ones? I experienced all of one system freeze, no save corruptions and the occasional frame rate hiccup or abnormal loading time between sections of the city. Also, if Yahtzee couldn't see that a full half the game area WAS Arkham City ripped whole cloth and made to look slightly less dingy, I have to wonder if he even made it that far into the game, let alone beat it.

This is easily one of my favorite reviews from Yahtzee now.

This was like...One of the best Arkham games. I don't know what Yahtzee's on about for some of these. Also, it had like, one of the *best* Banes.

Another lazy money grab of a game, swell. Maybe next time it will be Call of Batman, or The Dark Knight Creed.

Actually it was very fair. I'm playing it right now and nearly half the map is just copy-paste Arkham City. The combat is buggier and slower and more finicky. The gadget that they showed off as new the most, that zipline thing from deathstroke, didn't live up to expectation and the story is so terribly abysmal it is another "JOKER'S BEHIND IT ALL" plot and there is no reason for it. Joker was never always the full one and only villain of Batman, his popularity is ONLY due to Hamill. That's it, Hamill and the 90s tv show (and some of the 80s comics). I was really hoping he WOULDN'T be in this game. I've had more than enough of the same enemy over and over. The twist was a waste and the game was nearly a waste

xaayer Dug the map copy and pasted sections. YOUR IN GOTHAM. What do you expect the section of city that would become Arkham City to have completely different buildings? The combat is exactly the same, EXACTLY. They completely copy and pasted the design and animations. The only things they added were a couple new enemy types. It isn't slower and it isn't much buggier (after the patches).

@xaayer 10 жыл бұрын
Considering it is supposed to be Gotham CIty, I'd imagine that they'd have more buildings, yes. It's a legitimate complaint because really all this was was a glorified Expansion of Arkham City and not a full new game. New features but nothing revolutionary. Saying the combat is the same is like saying the combat in SSB melee and Brawl is the same. Sure the idea is the same but Brawl is dramatically slower and watered down.

The combat is the same. Same controls, same moves, same gadgets, even the animations are exactly the same. They didn't change anything about it. Its awfully hard to water something down when nothing has been taken away or changed. And more buildings? Two full islands worth of buildings which more than doubles the space of Arkham city isn't enough for you? Any bigger and it would have been to much and it would have become a chore to cross the map for missions (honestly at times the map was almost to big as it was)

***** You just listed all the problems... Everything is the fucking same. Hell they even reused certain cutscenes, not to mention the boss fight for Deathstroke could almost be considered a flashy quicktime event. And speaking of Mr. Wilson, WHO IN THE FUCK thought charging you six bucks for Robin who can't glide was a good fucking idea?

I am risking comment only to educate you on batman lore a subject that everyone should be well versed in though no one really cares. All the mercenaries: deathstroke and deadshot in particular represent batmans need for vigilante justice as they have each been one though alot more deadly than batman. Firefly is simply a projection of batmans uncontrollable and destructive obsession. Though with Firefly its fire and with batman its batmanning. And black mask was about a wealthy gotham socialite able to dawn a mask and play out his darker fantasies until all that spiritual mumbo jumbo got weaved in the new storyline. And for the record Bane was also a mercenary for hire and vigilante along the same lines as the punisher until his first run in with batman. So thats that. D villians still line up with your theory and are better than any marvel villian. Like anybody has ever said why cant we have more appearances of Mysterio. Well except maybe Jim Sterling.

What do you mean, "well versed in"? I've been a fan since I was a kid, and I barely know anything outside the old/new movies, a couple of cartoon series and maybe a game or two. I didn't even know Deathstroke existed until I saw Teen Titans. I never look at comics because the ones that are recommended for awards are angst ridden or "dark" like Hush, but do jack to explain anything to introduce what the hell is going on. Deathstroke is an assassin for hire; not every villain should reflect a hero. It'd be like Rhino being a reflection of Spider-Man lol. If I had to chose reflection I'd say both he and Batman pull the "everything proof" shield bullshit when they should be smears on the pavement when facing things like Doomsday. Sorry guys, but knowing some version of self defence devised by Korean monks doesn't nullify your human vulnerabilities. Deathstroke is so bloody boring and so contrived that even knowing many combos on easy I can't bring myself to try and beat him again. He "learns all my moves" and won't except getting gel explosion damage even though I haven't used it before and won't accept certain kicks or punches even if they were never used before. He interrupts combos, uses unblock able moves when you see an opening and attack when the game telegraphs you to go for it, and he even somehow lands kicks and punches even though he's facing the opposite direction to Batman! I gave up after ten to twelve tries. Deathstroke God modes, pulls cheap shots and is the most BORING boss I've ever fought in a game. (I'm not angry at you or anything XD I just got a bit confused at the knowledge of the lore part and kind of went on a tangent about the game)

TheNightshade43 Umm when you fight Deathstroke just use your clawshot to pull him and beat on him. Do that until he comes wailing at you and you're prompted to counter over and over. Eventually he'll start throwing shit which you also counter. I think it's a fun fight. Win and enjoy the prize.

By well versed I mean having read the comics. Most of the rogues gallery A listers were introduced in the fifties with the exception of Dr. Strange, the Joker, and Catwoman who were early rivals for Batman introduced in the forties. This sixties and seventies saw alot of the D list rogues and some of these were re modeled in the eighties and then the nineties with little exposition as to why their origins may have changed. Mostly due to a need to tap into older readers. And while I appreciate all the cartoons, at least DC can do something right even if it isnt live action, these are not cannon. In fact Batman, as opposed to many other comic books out there, is a great series to get to know because there are so many anthologies though none complete yet of the monthlies and bi monthlies out there because of his popularity. And while it may be true that Mr. Wayne be asphalt pudding or however you put it. He represents the best o f humanity and humanism so such an end does not paint a bright future for us.
