This is how Bruce Wayne finally retired in Batman: Beyond. During the pilot episode, a noticeably aging (but amazingly, still capable) Batman went to handle a warehouse burglary. Everything went by the numbers until he fell into some sort of acute respiratory distress. He was close to passing out, and one of the guys was inching in to finish Batman off, but he ended up picking up a gun that one of them dropped and scared the guy away. That's what finally made Bruce decide to hang up the cape.
