It was time to return to the 1989 soundtrack of Batman The Videogame from the NES, with a cover of Axis Chemical Factory, the stage 2 theme. This tune is another banger, featuring several melodies and quite intense drum parts for an NES soundtrack!
This song features 4 main sections, an intro, a verse, a prechorus, and a chorus (if you can really identify instrumental music that way ;-) ). Two particularly interesting things in this song are the bass line for the verse riff, and the melodies for the prechorus section. The bass line on the verse features a driving pulse but with unusual rhythmic groupings of notes by holding a quarter note over the bar line, creating multiple instances of groups of 7 beats. If it sounds weird, try playing it, it feels even weirder! The melodies over the prechorus are interesting as well, one melody holds a vamp alternating between B and C, while the other plays F over the B, G over the C, F# over the B, and then G over the C. It creates an ambiguous dissonance which really gives a sense of movement to the song as well as a strong unique hook.
My arrangement I tried to generally stay true to the original NES arrangement with two major additions, I added an extra short lead break over the 2nd verse and fattened up the bass line by adding rhythm guitars doubling the bass line. I then added a grind to the drums over the prechorus to add some extra intensity the 2nd time around.
