This comic is so famous for Robin's death that I didn't know that it was in the middle-east. Or that superman is in it. Or an actual historical figure Ayatollah Kohmeini is in it. Or that Joker becomes an ambassador from Iran. This comic is kinda bizarre.

Like it's such a bizarre comic and so absurd that it really seems like they intended for the readers to vote for him to survive. And then people voted to kill him and they were like "oh, no, we only have like two weeks before printing, shit" and they just had to cobble shit together.
@wtk60694 жыл бұрын
My understanding is the story would be printed basically the same except a few pages of difference. Compared to Jim Starlin's other comic work, even the rest of his rather serious Batman run, this story was just over the top and borderline absurd at times.

I will never understand the people who hated Jason and voted for him to die. He was a sad, traumatised fifteen year old kid, lashing out in the only way he knew how. But he was still good and trying to do good. He really didn't deserve the treatment he got then or the constant blame for his own death in the years that followed (subsequent comics always seemed to forget to mention Sheila's involvement and the fact Jason went in because he thought she was in danger, rather than recklessly thinking he could take the Joker down alone)

But why did the fans vote to kill JT Robin? Well, JT Robin killed a pimp and lied to Batman about the incident. There were other things too. But this was the last straw. He threw the pimp off a building. If I remember the conversation went something like...... Batman; Robin, did he fall or did you push him? JT Robin; He slipped.
@NickthePobrecito4 жыл бұрын
That’s not why they killed him. They voted to because he had the same origin story as Dick Grayson. He also came off as arrogant. He only came off like this because the person who created Jason Todd, didn’t like the idea of Batman having a sidekick so he made him seem horrible so that he could one day be reconciled. Also, the guy who Jason pushes off of the building had just forced a young girl into hanging herself. Also, keep in mind that Jason is a lot different than every other Robin. His rage is what empowers and defines him, and even Bruce understands that. So this is why, he kills. It’s the most effective way, and he personally doesn’t agree with Batman’s ways of returning them to Arkham Asylum because they’re just going to break out and do what they do, just to repeat the process. Jason knows that from personal experience. Although, today, Jason and the Batfamily are on good terms and often work together.

After hearing the whole story for the first time I can see why this is one of the darkest stories of batman career. I'll be honest the story itself in my opinion is over the top rediculous. The fact that Joker would dress up in an Iranian garb is just baffling, and while I understand the US was having problems with Iran at the time, it just does not seem like something Joker would do, at least to me anyway. Really happy to finally see how Jason's death played out and it's truly tragic how he met his end. He wasn't perfect (then again who is) and while he did make some questionable descions as Robin, he died a hero, giving his life for the mother who gave him little love in return. Finally in my 100% honest opinion DC should never have bought Jason back as to me it cheepens what the Joker did on that day. I understand that in comics nobody stays dead, and maybe in a reboot he would have been bought back anyway, but it really would of been better had he remained in the grave to truly show how low the Joker is willing to go to push Batman closer to the edge. Thank you very much for showing this story Comichistorian, it was truly a joy to see as I've never read it and finally got to see it, thanks to you. :)

Anytime anyone described Death of the Family to me, they usually describe Jason’s kidnapping and death but now I find out that tons of absurd shit was left out like Joker becoming an ambassador lol

Lebanon doesn't have any deserts so this comic is a bit stereotypical it's all good though I still love death in the family

The also assume in the comic that the lebanese language is Farsi when its Arabic, and inaccurately dipict their looks wearing Arabic sterio typical clothing when the lebanese never wore those! I was so angry when I read this.

He did and they were awesome!!!

Jim Starlin's Batman run had a lot of weird political elements in it. His biggest story-arc prior to Death in the Family involved Batman working with the CIA to prevent the assassination of Ronald Reagan.

Is this during the silver age or the bronze age?
@comicstorian8 жыл бұрын
This is Modern the shift from Silver to Modern is considered the mid 1980's and this was one of the first books to push the Modern Age

so death in the family was after the killing joke or before
@highnn97618 жыл бұрын
before. the killing joke happens years later while Jason is red hood and back together with the batfamily.

Personally speaking, I would love to see u continue this timeline through the Tim Drake intro. Tim is my favorite Rovin and his introduction is a great thematic sequal to this story.
@Dreez768 жыл бұрын
Jason Todd, his mom, and those 8 Prisonguards, their deaths are on Batmans hands because he refuses to kill the Joker. It should be pretty clear to Batman that Joker will never be redeemed and functional in the normal society, and spending tax-money on keeping him in a jailcell is a waste of taxdollars. Batman should've just killed Joker and thereby prevented the death of these 10 people.

I'd say roughly 70% of all Gold & Silver Age plots involved foreign affairs. Jack Kirby always drew communists like cavemen.

He died as he lived: Being Batman's greatest failure.
@frofunk7188 жыл бұрын
how is he a failure?
@Just_Some_Guy_with_a_Mustache8 жыл бұрын
chad fulani He was a troubled boy with a violent streak, and Batman gave him martial arts training and a utility belt of weapons. It's not Jason that's the failure. It's just that Jason's upbringing was a failure on Batman's part. His death, of course, is another kind of failure for Batman.
@frofunk7188 жыл бұрын
+Just Some Guy with a Mustache. However, he learned to value other people's lives and not just his own, still tried to save the person who betrayed him because it was the right thing to do, and died in the attempt to save a life. Isn't that how a hero is supposed to die if they do in fact die?
@Just_Some_Guy_with_a_Mustache8 жыл бұрын
chad fulani True. But Batman himself acknowledges he should've given Jason another outlet than this. His death is a failure not so much for himself as it is a failure for Batman. He failed to save this boy he put here in the first place.
@frofunk7188 жыл бұрын
+Just Some Guy with a Mustache. Also true, but everyone looks at jason as a failed robin or a cautionary tale. Not as he should be truly seen. He was a robin who didn't have support, love or guidance (grayson, drake, and damian) and still managed to not have his harsh life make him the person he could have been. Yes, i understand who he is as the red hood now. Just saying that after constantly compared to dick grayson, having to take care of himself (which no robin or even bruce had to do), he managed to still care enough to want to fight crime and say fuck everything and everyone
