is there any point explaining that you don't need an R rated version of this story? movie out of the 80's, PG-13 is the new R. an R rated version would be more explicit than the book.

@@plasticweapon I mean Batman imagined hacking up two face with an axe in full detail in one scene. As well as Batman being tied next to a mountain of naked dead homeless people. Those scenes are definitely not pg 13, but I get your point.

I like this even though it copies ways to much of the Dark Knight Return. A dark and macabre story. Also Deacon Blackfire is one few people to brutally destroy Batman alongside the Mutant Leader, Predator, and Bane but doing so psychologically instead physically.

I always liked this Cult story. I remember reading this when i was like 9 or 10yrs old and the part where Robin find Batman in the sewer really grabbed in the story. What i always liked was that robin was drawn older and then they get in that huge Batmobile tank! A kids imagination goes further when your younger.

Actually the first time Batman was broken was in 1966 by another obscure villain named the Monarch of Menace however, since this is the post crisis continuity and this story is just far better then that other one I like to think of this one as the first time Batman was truly defeated

I never got if Starlin following the Dark Knight Returns was by editorial mandate from Dennis O'Neil or by himself. Both Death In the Family and the Cult are about events alluded in DKR as the death of Jason and how Batman had to change the batmobile because of unspecified riots in Gotham. The DC policy at the time, from 86-89, seemed to be the current comics would hint they were leading to the reality of Dark Knight Returns and try to grab some of the book's popularity for themselves. That policy was clearly waived once the Batman movie came out and the 90s comics reality redirected the industry to big events like Death of Superman and Knightfall, variant covers and whatever else. Maybe we got spared of the mutant gang appearing in the books or Two Face kidnapping of the siamese twins.

Ah, so this is the "Jim Starlin losing his mind" I've heard about. Does the story explain why Blackfire never saw fit to unmask Batman and expose his identity to Gotham? Or announce that he broke The Dark Knight even if he didn't feel like unmasking him? With the kind of power and reach he has in this story and how he uses appearances to maintain his power, you'd think that revealing that the scariest dude in Gotham is just a mortal he was able to break would help his endeavors.

Thanks for reviewing this book, I know it has its critics but I think it's still a great read, Bernie Wrightsons art is magnificent in places he was without a shadow of a doubt one of the best ever horror artists in comics or any medium. The dream sequences and the pages leading up to when Jason discovers Batman captive in the sewers are especially effective. One thing that struck me though when I first read it was the scene when one of Gordons cops volunteers to go undercover after they discover the Deacons ageless case history, after that he's not seen again such a wasted opportunity for positive ethnic character representation. Also the colouring was awful like someone vomited over the art in places. It would have been better left black and white. Hey! DC how about a "noir" edition of this book should be good for a buck or two. Anyhow great review as always looking forward to your "A Death in..." critique next.

Absolutely spot on comment on the overuse of Dark Knight Returns elements. I was extremely irritated by this when I read the comic back in the day and it found it made the whole thing feel phony and stale. But now that I'm looking at this terrific Bernie Wrightson art, I feel maybe I should give it another try. Thanks for all your videos, they are a real treasure trove for a Bat-fan.

I totally LOVE this series, I feel it,s a great story and I don,t know why anyone would think it,s obscure or anything, Batman mentions Blackfire in Batman 429. Commenting to himself about his not having really recovered from that encounter, that,s more of a mainstream comic (Batman )volume 1, having been mentioned there more certainly establishes the Cult as canon and is worthy of any Batman comics, fan,s respect. I never saw the problem with this series, it,s awesome !

This story is really good imo but I can understand that the comic can be off-putting given its probably one of the most darkest written comics out there. It has its issues and yeah it does try to emulate TDKR but I think this story is truly great. Deacon Blackfire is a very interesting villain but then again I like the idea of Batman going up against a Charles Manson esc cult on steroids. Wish Deacon didn't die at the end of the book as I do feel he had a lot of potential for future stories and it took him becoming a Black Lantern to come back.
