Yeah, yeah, millionth time someone praises this version of the Joker (both the writing and Hamill's performance), but I love that the first half of this episode shows that Joker is a legitimately good clown. Even though he's only there to blow up the party he can't resist showing off a bit, giving a performance with a ton of energy and entertainment to it.

A lot of people nowadays tend to forget that the Joker hasn't always just been out to spread chaos an anarchy. That's a fairly new character development. This show draws from all across the Joker's comic book history, and throughout a large part of that history the Joker would consider himself as an entertainer, and considering his massive ego he'd consider himself the best entertainer around, so of course he'd want to put on a good show, even if he was going to kill everyone with explosives at the end of it.
@jp38132 жыл бұрын
@Jonathan Jones Don't know what the comic books have been doing, but we've seen plenty of different interpretations of the Joker across all media for the past decade or so. Mark Hamill has continued his interpretation in the Arkham games, Joaquin Phoenix's version is more of a tortured soul, John DiMaggio portrayed a more sadistic character in Under the Red Hood, etc...

@tehdipstick2 жыл бұрын
Bruce Timm really wanted to play into the Joker's mercurial, unpredictable nature, so this iteration was prone to having mood swings. It's less about chaos, as the Joker being an agent of pure chaos, as in the Nolan movies, wasn't really what they were going for with the character back in the early 90's. It's really just to show how he can switch on a dime, going from being enraged that some kid snuck into his van to immediately being amused by the fact that Jordan followed his advice.

@majkus2 жыл бұрын
"From the '50s!" One of the fascinating things about the animated series was the odd time-frame in which it lives. On one hand, it seems to be the 1930s, with the art-deco lettering and architecture (and, in Mask of the Phantasm, a version of the 1939 New York World's Fair plays a major role); but Batman has 1990s (or later?) advanced computing capabilities, and the technology in general seems to be up-to-date with televisions and the like. The 'noir' look is influenced by films of the 1940s. This sort of cheerful anachronism is clearly intentional, and gave the show much of its distinctiveness.
@jean-philippedoyon99042 жыл бұрын
At 8:20, they kinda cut it but we have the only remnant of when Tim Curry was suppose to be the Joker...That mechanical clown, you can really hear it ! Bruce Timm came up with the idea for the episode when he had the image in his mind of Batman trying to save a child, but the child's too scared because of Batman's intimidating look.
@Kidapollo922 жыл бұрын
Trivia The title of the episode is taken from the song "Be A Clown" by Cole Porter, popularized in the 1948 movie musical The Pirate. The song was later rewritten as 'Make 'Em Laugh' in Singin' in the Rain, which incidentally, became the title of another Batman episode. This episode marks the first time in the DCAU where Batman is knocked out and finds himself trapped when he awakens. A few other examples include "Joker's Wild", "Moon of the Wolf", "Read My Lips", "Trial", "Cult of the Cat", and "Mad Love". However, at no point do his captors take advantage of his unconscious state to remove his mask and find out his secret identity.

Tim Curry's uncredited cameo as the Laughing robot clown is a reference to the laugh he would have used had he remained cast as the Joker. According to Paul Dini, Curry's Joker voice strained his throat and was too demanding on his vocal cords, leading to the decision to recast Mark Hamill as the Joker.
@Kidapollo922 жыл бұрын
Frank Paur, the director, was having difficulties with the storyboarding crew, and when a freelancer quit, Bruce Timm storyboarded the entire second act. The trap Joker attempts to kill Batman with is the famous water torture trap which Harry Houdini escaped out of in approximately two minutes. The roller coaster sequence was adapted into the third stage of the Joker level in the Super Nintendo game The Adventures of Batman & Robin. The chef from "Pretty Poison" and the fat woman from "The Underdwellers" can be seen in the crowd at the birthday party. Jekko's comment that the "Great Prosciutto" was a ham refers to the fact that Prosciutto is the actual Italian word for "ham".

I am 100% convinced that that shot of Batman swinging in with the steel girders is a reference to the 60’s Spider-Man cartoon. It felt like a combined reference to 2 different shots in the intro for that show.
@tehdipstick2 жыл бұрын
"Why does he look 25, but sound 8?" So Bruce Timm has actually talked about the reason Jordan looks kinda weird, with a widower's peak and everything. Simply put, this episode marked the first time that the animators had to draw/animate a child as a main character, and they just weren't used to working with child proportions. They tried several things, but nothing worked, so in the end they just animated Jordan with adult proportions and hair, making him look like a miniature adult. No one was really happy about it, least of all Bruce Timm, but in the end they had to settle for that design in order to get the episode animated on time. Bruce has said that it took several more episodes before they came up with what they considered their first successful character designs for children. 13:18 "I want more, like, Harley." This is why the HBO Max order isn't the best. It introduces Harley way too soon, leaving a huge gap between her first and second appearances. The production order basically had Harley in every Joker-centirc episode after "Joker's Favor", but because the HBO Max order has "Joker's Favor" as the very first Joker episode, followed by the Joker episodes that technically came before it, that means the next few Joker episodes are not going to have Harley in them.

The clown voice is an imitation of clown actor Ed Wynn, perhaps best known to general audiences as laughter-loving Uncle Albert in 'Mary Poppins'. Like many comics, he also showed he had dramatic chops as well, notably in Rod Serling's 'Requiem for a Heavyweight' and a couple of memorable Twilight Zone episodes. He was so distinctive that there have been lots of cartoon voices (like this one) imitating him through the decades. Wikipedia says that one of these was Mark Hamill's character 'Fergle O'Reilly' in Dexter's Laboratory, so yes, it was Hamill doing his Ed Wynn here as well.

Jekko the Clown looks similar to Tim Curry’s “Pennywise the Dancing Clown” in his makeup, hair and outfit. Batman's line about how the Joker "always knew how to make an exit" would later be repeated by the Joker himself in "Joker's Wild" and then by Zatanna in an episode with the same name. When Joker disguises as Jekko the voice he uses is an imitation of the vaudeville and movie comedian Ed Wynn, best known for voicing the Mad Hatter in the Walt Disney Alice in Wonderland.

Bruce Timm credited storyboard artist Phillip Norwood for the brilliant bit of the Joker tapping his cane along a fence, and for staging the rollercoaster finale in an exciting but economical fashion. "We knew immediately that we didn't have the budget that Disney's Roller Coaster Rabbit (1990) did," said Timm. "We had to figure out a way of doing all that really neat fast action on a roller coaster without having to animate perspective. Norwood figured out a lot of interesting little cheats, and fortunately AKOM pulled it off, which they don't normally do."

There WAS a Six Flags in Ohio. It was no slouch in the roller coaster department itself, at one point having 10. It was a park called Geauga Lake. It was about 20 minutes southeast of Cleveland and was founded in the late 1800s around the same time as Cedar Point. Of note was it was on the side of a small lake, and on the opposite side was Sea World. (Yes, there was a Sea World in Ohio.) It was independent for most of that time before being bought in the 90s by a Premier Parks, who have a bunch of parks around the country. Back around the turn of the millenium, Premier bought Six Flags and rebranded all of their parks to be Six Flags, including Geauga Lake, which became Six Flags Ohio. A year later, they bought the Sea World, and integrated it into the park, rebranding as Six Flags Worlds of Adventure. And then in the mid aughts the amusement park industry was having some trouble and Six Flags was looking to liquidate some of its assets. It sold Six Flags WoA to Cedar Fair, the company that owns Cedar Point (and by that time, all of the Kings parks - Island, Dominion, etc). Cedar Fair had been after Geauga Lake for years as they were their nearest competetor, only about 60-90 minutes away to the east. CF bought the park and rebranded it back to being Geauga Lake... for about two years, when they closed the park for good. As anyone in the know could have predicted they bought the park just to close it. It was a huge blow to my childhood. I was already out of high school when they closed, but we always got season passes and I'd spent my summers living at that park. One summer we went 20 times by the end of the season. Now it's just a rotting wasteland.
