The scene at the end of Leslie hugging Batman and how it transitions to the photo of Leslie hugging young Bruce, presumably moments after his parents had died, actually choked me up. I just love how a superhero like Batman has ordinary folks as his heroes. Even the elderly who are so often dismissed and forgotten. It's extremely touching.

Alfred Pennyworth and Leslie Thompkins are effectively Bruce's parents. She's NOT just someone who took care of him once. Alfred and Leslie DID date.

Dr. Leslie is a long-established character from the comics. She's Bruce's godmother. She doesn't approve of Bruce being Batman, so he tries not to involve her in his work, except very rarely when he has no other choice.

The thing I love about BTAS is that we get to see that Bruce has loving people in his life beyond Alfred. That is something the other series usually gloss over or ignore. Lucius sometimes gets added in when they want an arc where Alfred is indisposed, but that feels cliche at this point.

I feel like there's consistent confusion on when this show is supposed to be set, but I'm pretty sure it's just supposed to be set around the time it came out. I always interpreted the reason everything looks so old timey is just that Gotham is just kind of a place stuck in the past, probably due to high crime and poverty rates. After all if it were in the 50s the rest of the DCAU wouldn't really make sense
@willfanofmanyii37512 жыл бұрын
Beyond is set in the 2040s, so Season 1 of Batman is definitely set during the 90s.
@HiddenWindshield2 жыл бұрын
There's actually a very good reason why people would be confused as to when the series is set. According to the DVD special features, the writers didn't want to set it in any specific time period, so they deliberately took pieces from different time periods and mashed them all together. '30s tommy guns, '50s cars, futuristic computers.... All of it together prevents you from nailing it down even to a given _decade._ Of course, they weren't planning to make a whole universe out of it at the time, so Justice League had to retcon it to being in modern times.
@artsohc2 жыл бұрын
@@HiddenWindshield I also feel like Gotham and Batman lend itself well to organized crime and people like Capone, which fall into that 20s/30s depression and prohibition style. In contrast, with the Superman cartoon that occurs in the same universe, Metropolis has a 60s/70s style that works well with a “City of the Future”

The grappling hook-assisted turn in and deployment of shields on the Batmobile are nods to the Tim Burton films Batman and Batman Returns, which the TV series was influenced by. When Bruce says "Roland Daggett's up to something, Alfred?", Alfred replies "That almost goes without saying, doesn't it sir?" When Lucius Fox asks Bruce if he thinks Daggett's up to something in "Cat Scratch Fever", Bruce replies "That goes without saying, doesn't it?" Salvo Smith from "The Forgotten" can be seen in the group of Park Row residents protesting redevelopment.

I love every episode of the Batman where Batman interacts with normal people and stands up to the people. And yes, Leslie Thompson does know that Batman is Bruce Wayne. I love this show so much; to me it's still the definiteive interpretation of Bruce/Batman outside the comics, and in some cases it's better than the comics.
@LucificNight2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I feel that Batman: TAS is so much more definitive than the comics themselves. Sure, there are some iconic stories in the comics, but TAS is a lot more digestible than decades of comics. Plus it's both self-contained enough that you can follow the storyline, recognize the characters (who are generally portrayed consistently within the show) and understand who Batman is, just by watching the series and nothing else.

Gotham is a city stuck in time. It's not ACTUALLY the 50s. It's the 20s, 30s, 50s, and 60s all at the same time....but happening in the 90s. Gotham is an old historical city simultaneously preserved intentionally AND unintentionally, because it's such a nightmare that progress is hard. It's sort of implied that Gotham has its own style of cars and fashion both because Wayne Industries perhaps makes and sells stuff of a certain style especially cheap in Gotham, AND the people of Gotham intentionally dress a bit more in a style that sort of matches the city's aesthetics. Gotham is effectively a rival for New York City, but just right down in New Jersey. So virtually the same climate and conditions as NYC. So you see a lot of the same styles and fashions from 20s-90s NYC. Suits, trenchcoats, mohawk punks, etc. Similarly, Metropolis is a city designed to look like the 60s/70s vision of the future, but Metropolis successfully made that dream a reality and more than just an aesthetic. It has continued in that style, evolving into the city version of an Apple store. Shiny white and glass. Smooth shapes. A city constantly ahead of the curve technologically. Largely thanks to Lex Luthor. When the big super villain of the city sees himself as the savior leading humanity to a brighter future....some stuff works out. They're cities shaped by the villains that plague them and the heroes that save them.

very good chapters guys! This series has many references to some live action Batman movies. This series is inspired by the time in Tim Burton's Batman movies for the plot and atmosphere of this version of Gotham City and its characters. and in this video it is seen and that one of the boys says it, that a part is taken from the first Batman movie. it has to do with two moments of the Batmobile. one is where when batman throws his grappling hook from the batmobile it gets caught on the corner post and it flips to the side min 6:43. Well, that reference is in the movie and another reference is the way the Batmobile drives itself min 7:22 and the way Batman closes the car with the Shield min 8:26. Those references are in the 1989 Batman movie. But here is something they missed and this is where I am a little more detailed here they introduce the name of a character for the first time in the history of the multiverses of other worlds, whether or not Batman world. I tell you in which part is it? Well, when Batman says to the little man how about your intro Baxter Stockman? min 8:15. the name is not the first time they have seen it. This comes from another world that is not that of the bat. Did you know who Baxter Stockman is? Baxter Stockman was the mad scientist who invented rat traps with little robots and who later transformed him in dimension X into a mutant fly. Well this character appears in the stories of the Ninja Turtles, in the classic series of 87/90's. remember? because it is seen that the little man who plays with time is half crazy like him. Did you notice the detail? but there I told them.oh I forgot to mention one more reference to the Batman movie, which is the way Batman leaves two roses in the alley min 10:52 and that Michael Keaton's Batman does that, only he does it like Bruce Wayne but he does it the same.

Or like the chair being a breakaway chair, this was the poorest spot in Gotham, so maybe it was a chair so busted it would have broke next time someone sat on it.
