Batman: The Video Game was published and released by Sunsoft in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is a platform game consisting of five levels, that last of which being the Gotham City Cathedral where Batman must face off against The Joker! Similar to Ninja Gaiden, the gameplay largely involves Batman wall jumping in order to scale buildings. There were also versions of this game released for Sega Genesis and Gameboy. The NES version of the game is widely known as being one of the few movie based titles to receive positive critical reception for the system. They must of had a good video game design education ..
In this video, James Rolfe and Mike Matei play through the final stage of the game “the Gotham City Cathedral” in a desperate attempt to make it to The Joker!

@ 23:00 WHY AREN'T YOU GUYS USING THE BATRANG!!! It's batrang, then gun, then fists if/when they run out!!! P.s. Try farming the last blender dropper for items, before the final fights. If kneeling and punching them,as they drop, doesn't work. Try throwing batrangs, one at a time per blender, then jump across and back to gather drop items. Then going into the battle with full everything. Kinda' think that's why they put it there.

I don't know if there's a single video on KZbin that so accurately captures the feelings involved in playing a hard video-game as this one does. You can tell how beleaguered they are, but they just have to keep going. Watching them get better and better at the level is so satisfying (with bouts of frustrated sloppiness in between; passing it back and forth to stay calm, etc.). Anyone who's stuck out a hard NES game can relate. All for the intense joy of getting to watch a crappy cutscenes that confirms you beat it. "I was trying to pretend he really killed my parents" slays me. It's so absurd, and such a sincere kind of thought in that kind of situation.

The reason they mapped pause to select and weapons to start is so that you can switch weapons on-the-fly while still moving, otherwise you'd have to take your thumb off the D-Pad to switch weapons. That was freaking intense though and awesome to see James finally beat the Joker! My strategy has always been to use batarangs so you can stand between the lightning just outside of punching range, but the trick there is you can't just mash the fire button, you have to use a slightly slower rhythm so that you don't hit the projectile limit and can keep the Joker flashing for when he runs past you.

Never played this one, but I did play a few bad ones on SEGA, PlayStation, and SNES. I personally like Arkham Asylum it was everything I wanted in a Batman game, great story, fluid controls and dynamics, gadgets and all the other bat-quiptment. Now the only thing it was missing was the Batmobile but, with the newest game that will be rectified, and maybe become my newest favorite batman game.

Sometimes I wonder if the reason that early NES games difficulty was insanely high back in the day was for lack of game design experience from the developers. Game designers today have a better grasp of balancing their game due to years and years of learning. But I'm not so sure about back then.
@volkerball85
@volkerball85 6 жыл бұрын
It was actually more about the limited capacity and depth of games at the time. They couldn't make 99% of the games all that long, so they cranked up the difficulty like crazy so you'd get your money's worth, so to speak. Your typical action-platformer game of the era had maybe 6-20 stages at the most? If they weren't INSANELY DIFFICULT, then you could beat each game the same day you bought it, which would suck when you just plopped down $30 for a new game.

That was one of the coolest things I've seen in some time. Many of us have been there-- marathon sessions, either alone or switching off with friends, making progress until you reach just before the end. Then it was a battle of will as you would get knocked down repeatedly by the end boss and have to keep working your way back. Victory was all the more sweet if/when you saw the game through and finally took down whomever stood in your way-- The Joker, The Jacquio, Bowser, Dr. Wily, Dracula, or any of the other familiar foils. You (and your friends) felt like you had really accomplished something. This two-part series encapsulates those memories and actually helps me to relive them. My buddy Kevin & I did this same Batman run 25 years ago, so this was extra-sweet for me. Can't wait to see what is next!

I just think it's really admirable of Batman to overcome his height disadvantage to battle Gotham's underworld. Guy's gotta be, what... four foot two or something? Incidentally, yeah, this playthrough had me on pins and needles. Kudos to you guys for seeing it through! It's an inspiration to those of us who go mad with rage having to endure Batman game gauntlets again and again on our own. I'm tempted to think that whoever was in charge of trophies tried to make an homage to these old grueling NES games when they decided how to wrap up the last Arkham Knight DLC pack.

Guys. At the boss guy before the joker, I believe you're supposed to jump and cling to the wall on your left when he charges you, then jump down and score a few projectile hits and repeat. I think the game is trying to tell you something in that wall climb stage right before you meet that sub boss...hence the gap jumps of death and constant wall climbs. I've never played the Batman games on nes...but at least I'm old school player enough to notice that detail. But hey! You beat the Joker! This one is for the ages!

We all felt your pain playing through this game. So awesome, so challenging and so frustrating as well. It's emotionally draining playing through it. As a viewer though your refusal to farm life/items on that last thing that drops the killer claws is beyond frustrating....lol congrats on beating the Joker, James. Fun to watch you close a chapter in your life

This is one of my favorite NES games to date along with SMB3, LOZ, Blaster Master, Fester's Quest, and MegaMan. I have beat the Joker once when i was 10 years old after weeks of playing everyday after school. Glad to see you guys replay this one, Enjoyed every minute of this crazy "NES HARD" type of game.

The feeling of struggling with a hard challenge in an old school game and then finally beating it. An awesome feeling indeed that I'm all too familiar with.

Nice job you guys. Batman on the NES is a hard game but the fun in it involves how good the controls are. Like James said in his Batman Part 1 review, "A good game for the NES library but a hard son of a bitch."

The NES victory cry at the end was great! Everybody who played the NES back in the 80s was guilty of doing that when they beat a hard ass game! This episode was awesome. =D

I think having the weapons on the start button is actually a good idea since it allows you to cycle your weapons while moving. If it was on select you'd have to stretch your right thumb to reach it, or stop moving and use your left thumb.

For the second-to-last boss, you could just go crazy and barrage him with batarangs, but there's an easy trick to beat him. Go all the way to the left wall. While in this spot, he will USUALLY not rush toward you and punch. He only throws fireballs (which are pretty easy to jump over) and jumps & lands between 3 different spots. Wait until he lands close enough that you can hit him with your batarangs. Rinse and repeat. Basically: 1. Stay as far left as possible 2. Jump straight up to avoid his fireballs 3. Hit him with batarangs when he gets close Simple.

After getting my new TV connector at Radio Shack today, I set up my NES and play "Batman" on my 1976 JVC portable black & white TV and it was kinda fun in black & white. I can see it close while playing the game on the tiny TV screen. I made two pics of this game playing a "Batman" game on the NES in black & white.
